Those affected by the scoring change may question whether this will equate into a change in classroom teaching or preparation. “Of course! I will stress that students should answer every question,” Ms. Herman said. While the state ponders new ways to adjust testing guidelines, there remain other aspects of the exam that will hopefully see improvement in the future. “It would be nice if students could submit wordprocessed essays,” said Ms. Herman. To help make sure everything goes as planned, they incorporate stage crew. “I like to work with crew” Mikki Petty said “I’m the stage manager. In the year of 2008- 2009, Some people find it to be our schools fascinating. d i s t r i c t ’s Others believe it is attendance frightening, but diversity has record show its purpose in life; to makes that there us unique. were 2,655 Since complete uniformity whites, 847 is only a realistic element in Hispanics, a utopian society, diversity 579 African seems to be more prevalent Americans, amongst the high school 9 Native Americans, and 33 population than not. Asians and Pacific Islanders. Everyone has something These percentages have that makes him or her increased from previous different or unique. years. A point of difference As the world develops and grows, some people are afraid that ethnic diversity, yet nobody can escape from diversity, regardless of the belief that is held. Yes, it creates change, yet change is inevitable and can be beneficial. According to Buzzle.com, studies show that students who study in schools that encourage cultural integration show better adaption to situations in which they have to deal with multi-ethnicity. These students display an attitude that is more allencompassing and open to new ideas and situations because through studying about different cultures, they have realized the good from these cultures and become evolved in many ways. Diversity is about learning from others who are adversely unique in nature as compared those around them, which is exactly what an empowered education is all about. It empowers the individual student with the responsibility to acquire as much knowledge as possible about real life situations. With diversity being a common quality of the “real world,” what better way to expose students to such scenarios than through personal experience in school. Diversity has advantages and disadvantages, but without it, people would be close-minded and afraid of adapting to new ideas. Student laptops would be beneficial to all learners By: Miguel Ibarra Many schools have started to integrate laptops in their schools. I believe that the person who thought of this idea is a genius. I agree with this thought and believe that we should also slowly integrate laptops into our schooling system. One of many reasons would be to help those students who have a low income family, such as myself, have more time to work on projects that need a computer such as typing an essay, doing research for a paper. These students would benefit a lot more with a laptop, but so would the students who have computers at home. T h e s e students would no longer have to wait for the others to ‘catch up’ which will make the classroom move at a quicker pace. Another reason would be that it would impact our state achievement test scores in a very positive manner. This has been demonstrated dramatically in Virginia. After two years of a laptop initiative in Henrico County, high school score results increased on all eleven of the Virginia Standards of Learning tests. In 2000, only 60% of Henrico’s regular schools were accredited according to Virginia Standards of Learning criteria. By 2003, 100% of Henrico’s regular schools were accredited. This includes 40 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, and 9 high schools. Many laptop schools also report a substantial drop in student absenteeism. Maine schools have reported up to a 50% decrease in student absences, and in one Maine high school, the rate dropped from 9% to only 2%. Schools have long valued a high attendance rate as one measure of success. A number of laptop schools have also reported a decline in discipline problems among students. The last of my reasons would be to have the ability to save paper. In 2008, statistics show that approximately each person in the United States used about 749 pounds of paper every year. That’s a lot of paper. Think of how many trees are cut down. If we had not cut down those entire trees, then maybe there would not have been less destruction on the ozone. For those who do not know, trees absorb Co2 {carbon dioxide} which is released by cars, oil companies, people, The trees then give out oxygen which we humans need to breathe. The United States is only about 5% of the world’s population, but uses about 30% of the paper in the world. For those who really can make a difference, please take this theory about having laptops integrated into the schools (particularly the middle and high school) as a serious plea for a higer quality of education. Editorials Cats’ Tale Page 3 October 8, 2010 Currency makeover a frightening possibility Story & Art By: Eric Tangy Money is something that is one of the most sought after things in the world. People who don’t have it want it, and people who do have it want more of it. Have you wondered cared about the appearance of the dollars? You probably haven’t, and I don’t think anybody ever has. What if the U.S. dollar bills were to have a makeover? Do you think that would be a good idea? If you’re like most people, you’ve probably never even thought about it. The “Dollar Rede$ign Project” has recently been organized by a man named Richard Smith. People can vote on which one of the new “amazing” designs they would like to see on the dollar bills. You may be wondering why anyone would want to do this. He explained it like this: “Our great rival, the Euro, looks so spanky in comparison, it seems the only clear way to revive this global recession is to rebrand and redesign.” You may be thinking to yourself “he must be joking” but its not a joke. They’ve even released possible candidates for what designs will be on the bills. Examples of the new designs include a blue one dollar bill with Barack Obama on it, a pink five dollar bill with a native american teepee on it, and a green twenty dollar bill with an astronaut on it. Although these designs may sound interesting, the design of the dollar bills should be one of the last things to worry about. What about our thirteen trillion dollar debt? Changing what our money looks like would be one of the biggest wastes of time in the history of America. What do you think Mr. Washington? Read for a makeover? .... Mr. Washington? .... Sir? True beauty: Skin deep and completely subjective By: Miranda Caddell The media today has had a huge impact on teenagers. It says you’ve got to have the perfect body, hair, and make-up. Teens have this mindset now, as if they were hypnotized, and many will go very far to achieve this “perfect ” image the media has created. The views of popular magazines are that you have to be a size 2 to be accepted. Some models are underweight and seem malnourished, leading the readers to get the wrong impression about what a healthy body weight is. What they don’t seem to realize, though, is that all pictures in magazines are heavily edited. Also, doctors believe that it’s almost an impossible task to become “model thin.” Some will risk their lives for their looks by starving themselves and undergoing dangerous surgeries. Each year, 10 million people die from eating disorders, and on average, 1 in 57,000 die from cosmetic surgery. There are other ways to lose weight; other healthier ways. It’s not healthy to have a BMI of less than 16.5. It’s sad that people are refusing to eat because they want to look pretty, when chances are, they already are. They starve themselves when there are people in this world who aren’t able to get the things we have, including food. So many people are self-conscious about their appearance when they shouldn’t be. There are so many other things that are more important than how you look or what others think of you, and others’ opinions on your appearance should not be such a high priority. A couple of compliments aren’t worth the risk of physical injury or death. It’s more important to be happy and true to yourself than to try to conform to other peoples’ views of the perfect image. Some have come because of the schools positive reputation. “It has an excellent fine arts department and a good district that supports the strings,” Strings instructor Ben Roberts said. Though many students who have these new teachers have heard where they come from, others still may find the answers surprising. “I grew up in Brooklyn, New York,” Coach Chapman said, “I decided to go to Sheridan Jr. College in Wyoming for two years and graduated from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. I taught in Enid and Idabel for thirty-three years before deciding to come to Sulphur Springs.” Migrating from another state was true for many teachers new to the district. “I lived throughout the United States but grew up mostly in North Carolina and Wisconsin. I was also a musician and music student in the San Francisco Bay area.” Mr. Roberts said. Not only are students curious about where teachers come from, but students and parents alike are always interested in what the new teachers would bring into class with them. “I hope to bring an opportunity for the students to succeed and achieve rather than fail where it would be easier to,” Algebra teacher Branson Boykin said. help with chairs and tables would really help me out a lot.” Even with the issues, Mack doesn’t let his heath get in the way of his custodial duties and can still have a fun time at work. “An advantage of working here is meeting new kids with unique personalities and the new teachers as well.” Some people hate coming to work, but Mack loves coming and seeing everybody. “I am supposed to be here at 11:30, but I arrive to work 30 minutes early because I love what I do,” Mack said. During his free time away from the school, Mack works hard, but still finds time to sit down and relax. “I enjoy painting houses and landscaping,” Mack said, “I also love watching horror movies.” There are down sides, but for the most part, working at Sulphur Springs High School has been a positive experience for Mack. “I really love how the kids treat me and what I do here,” Mack said.
