BUGS R US Bugs as Food
Y
ou may have enjoyed the taste of CRAB
or LOBSTER or even SHRIMP at a
local seafood restaurant. But….there's
ANOTHER food group out there that people get
SQUEAMISH about when it's talked about in
polite society……BUGS AS FOOD!
BUGS are technically arthropods…..the same
as a crustacean like crab or lobster. They all keep
their skeletons…..EXOSKELETONS…..on the
outside. But for some reason, the United States
doesn't recognize BUGS AS FOOD.
Most all other countries in the world see insects as food. Underdeveloped
countries HAVE to. If they don't, people starve. Mexico, right across the
border from the US, sells scorpions on a stick, just like a CORNDOG. China
eats grasshoppers and ants. Australia eats termites. Africa eats grubs and
beetles. These insects are a FOOD GROUP.
ALL other animals on earth eat bugs……birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish,
OTHER insects, and mammals…..it's just the PEOPLE mammals of the
United States that haven't seen their way clear to eating a handful of six
legged animals.
The United Nations recently published an article outlining the health
benefits as well as the ease of farming insects versus cattle or sheep. For one
fact…..livestock take up A LOT OF ACERAGE which most foreign
countries don't have. Insects can be raised
by the BILLIONS in a very small area. And,
bugs are NUTRITIOUS! A very small
serving of grasshoppers, for example, has
the same amount of protein as ground beef.
ALL insects are high in vitamins and
minerals, too. Now YOU can enjoy a sixlegged snack right here in the Rogue Valley.
As part of the SUMMER READING
PROGRAM through all 15 branches of the
Jackson County Libraries, BUGS-R-US Educational Services will be dishing
up crickets and meal-worms during June and July.
This year, along with the regular BUGS program, they are offering to let
the audiences EAT real insects. It sounds weird, but since offering this back
in September, they have gone through 21 POUNDS of DEAD crickets and
mealworms…..everyone is wanting to eat bugs! They all taste like chicken
with a popcorn-like texture…..popcorn with legs…..they're even
FLAVORED like nacho cheese and BBQ.
For more information, talk to any of your local 15 Library branches or
check out the website at www.jcls.org. Come out and support your local
branch of the Jackson County Library, win some prizes just for reading books
and enjoy a crispy, mouth-watering 6-legged treat.

Have a Safe and Fun Summer!
By Megan Burroughs, Intake Coordinator for the
Children’s Advocacy Center of Jackson County
ummer is here and Southern Oregon has a
wide variety of fun activities and camps for
S
kids and families to participate in! Whether
you are sending your child off to a summer camp or having fun as a family,
keeping your kids safe is always the main concern.
How to Stay Safe
Here are some suggestions of things to consider when it comes to choosing a
camp for your child:
• What is the screening process for staff and volunteers?
• Is it a requirement for staff and volunteers to attend trainings in child
abuse prevention? (We offer the Darkness to Light Stewards of Children
child sexual abuse prevention training at our Center – call (541) 734-5437
for information!)
• Are staff and volunteers CPR certified?
• What is the staff-to-child ratio?
• Are there policies in place to ensure that children are not left alone with
only one adult?
If you’re attending a big event, it is important to consider ways to keep your kids
safe in large crowds. Here are some tips:
• Always keep kids within eyesight
• Make sure your kids understand the importance of staying close to you
• Have a plan in case you get separated
Staying Engaged
Have your kids ever complained about being bored, especially during the
summer? Staying engaged with your kids can help reduce boredom and
strengthen the bond you have with your children. Here are a few things to
remember:
• Play with your kids, rather than simply watching them
• During family time, turn cell phones off or on silent
• Reserve time for one-on-one time with each of your children
Having healthy familial bonds is important to your child’s development.
Consider cooking together, taking turns reading to one another, and playing
outside as a family. Taking day trips to explore nearby lakes and rivers is also a
great way to spend time together as a family and build those important bonds.
If you are looking for something fun to do over the 4th of July weekend, consider
going to Children’s Advocacy Center Night at the Ballpark! The game will be
Saturday, July 5th, and if you buy your tickets from us, half of the $8 ticket price
will go to support services for kids who come to us! You can call (541) 282-5474
X111 to purchase tickets. You can also take a look at the calendar in this edition
for other events that you can enjoy with your family this summer!
A free service to help parents find child care that best meets their family’s
needs in Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lake Counties.

SUMMER
READING
AT THE
LIBRARY
R
eaders of all ages will explore all things science
this summer as Jackson County Library Services
presents “Fizz Boom, Read!” during their
summer library program. Activities may include science
games and experiments, a visit from Bugs-R-Us, nature
exploration, and more.
The 2014 Summer Reading Program is free of
charge and open to young people, preschool through
young adult, with programs, prize drawings, storytimes,
a reading club, and more. Families are invited to join the Read-to-Me
portion of the program. Registration for “Fizz, Boom, Read!” begins as
soon as school is out. All children who read or listen to ten books will
receive a special bookmark, a reading certificate, and a coupon for a free
kid’s meal from HomeTown Buffet. Kids who complete the program will
also be eligible to enter local branch library drawings for additional
prizes.
Area teens (ages 12-18) are invited to “Spark a Reaction” this year
and join Jackson County Library Services’ Teen Summer Reading
Program. Create a felted wool project, make a “fobot” or a lava lamp or
just come and hang out. The library offers free movies, art activities, and
gaming days all summer long.
Teens who write a review of a book, graphic novel, audio or eBook,
or library program can earn the chance to win one of fifteen $100 Barnes
& Noble gift certificates as well as other prizes. Selected reviews will be
posted on the Teen section of the library Web site.
The “Fizz, Boom, Read!” program is sponsored by the Kenneth A.
and Lucille D. Hulburt Family Trust, Friends of the Library groups
throughout Jackson County, and HomeTown Buffet.

Miss Annie presents:
Mabel Sets The Table
sk Anna Martinez-Minter “A penny for your thoughts?” and she’ll
usually respond with an anecdote about children or a manners history
lesson. After all, local children’s entertainer “Miss Annie” is Southern
Oregon’s children’s etiquette advocate and the epitome of courtesy and kindness.
But ask her today, and you’ll get a different answer.
“My book!” Anna exclaims, her eyes sparkling. “After years of refining and
editing, I feel like I’ve finally given birth!” The book — Anna’s “baby” - is Mabel
Sets the Table, first of seven children’s books for young readers in Minter’s Miss
Annie Presents eti-kit series.
If you’re familiar with Anna’s Gracious Me™ Manners and Tea sessions for
young children, you understand her motives and
appreciate her approach.
“Just like the parent who cleverly conceals
broccoli in a child’s macaroni and cheese,
I’m writing the Miss Annie Presents series
to gently guide children toward good
manners and gracious behavior.
“Civility and courtesy open doors,”
Anna explains. “Children who aren’t
taught manners, who don’t understand
how to hold polite conversation, or who
don’t have proper hygiene are at a
disadvantage. My goal is to encourage busy
parents by offering fun ideas and suggestions
A
for interactive manners lessons.”
With her popular manners
classes and entertainment programs already keeping her busy,
why is Anna writing books?
“Mostly to raise awareness.
I’m told that, with regards to
manners, the baby got thrown out
with the bath water. I believe we
need to change our approach. I
wanted to emphasize respect and consideration for others, with a fun and
entertaining approach”.
“Parents and grandparents already know that habits are formed early,” Anna
says. “I believe they will appreciate this window of opportunity toward making
a difference in their child’s life”.
Ever gracious herself, Anna is quick to credit others with helping her
“deliver” Mabel Sets the Table, including Illustrators Michelle Bergeron and
Denise Elzea, editor Constance Frankland, and publisher Steve Laible of The
Kodel Group LLC. Constance Frankland, also published as Constance Bates,
lives and works in Grants Pass
Miss Annie Presents: Mabel Sets the Table is available at Amazon.com and
local bookstores June 2014. The Really Big Book of Manners, an adult guide with
hands-on activities for children, is next on Anna’ project list. Follow her on

“apps”, that allow for additional communication.
While most adults use their devices to make calls, text, manage e-mail, and
surf the web, “tweens” and teens connect with each other differently and over

used by kids include Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and Vine. Popular
texting and voice call apps include TextPlus, Pinger, and TextFree. These apps

So what can you do to help your children be safe? First, maintain an open
line of communication with your kids about their smart device use. Ask them to
help you understand what apps they’re using and how they work. Second, replace
your existing home wireless router with one that has parental controls. This will
allow you to restrict access to high risk sites, limit usage times, and reduce the
need for controlling individual devices. A retail associate at a home electrics

are connected with the apps your kids are using. I have prepared a guide with

Planning, Deciding and Acting
Commission for Children and Families
ix-year-old Tommy Tighe had a dream: He wanted to create world
peace. “Ever since I was four I had a vision that I could cause peace
in the world” he said. “I want to make a bumper sticker that says PEACE,
PLEASE DO IT FOR US KIDS signed Tommy”
So he developed this plan:
1. Call about the cost of printing bumper stickers.
2. Make a plan for a loan so that the printer can get paid.
3. Have bumper stickers printed.
4. Figure out how to tell people about the bumper stickers.
5. Get addresses of world leaders.
6. Write a letter to all of the presidents and leaders of other countries
and send them each a free bumper sticker.
7. Talk to everyone about peace.
S
8. Call the newspaper and tell them about my business.
9. Arrange for a talk at my school.
Once he decided the plan was a good one, he acted on it. Soon Tommy
had a picture of Mikhail Gorbachev,
former president of the former Soviet
Union that included his autograph
saying “Go for peace Tommy.” Tommy
also sold a bumper sticker to former
U.S. president Ronald Reagan.
He has since sold more than
2,500 of his bumper stickers and
ASSETS:
repaid his $454 loan. Not only has he
done well, his story appears in the
SOCIAL
best-selling book Chicken Soup for

the Joan Rivers Show. When Joan

really made a difference, he replied

Acupuncture and Traditional
Chinese Medicine for Kids,
Part 1
By Miranda Black, MAcOM, LAc, Radiant Family LLC
541-244-0111
P
eople often ask me if they need to believe in acupuncture for it to work.
This question makes me smile. For one, I have to remind myself that
acupuncture is still a mystical experience for some people because it’s
not well understood. But it is an effective, straight-forward method of helping
the body to heal.
My favorite way of explaining how belief is not necessary for acupuncture’s
effects is that the populations it works best on are pets and kids.
We know that Fido is not fretting
over whether or not his acupuncture
treatments are going to cure his
arthritis. And the toddler is surely not
ruminating over her acupuncture
session and creating a placebo effect.
It is true that kids and animals both
respond to acupuncture more quickly
than adults, and often require fewer
treatments. I believe that not
stressing over the healing process is a
large part of what allows kids and
animals to heal quicker.
Sometimes people are surprised
that children can receive acupuncture. If you have never experienced it, it is
helpful to know that it is nothing like getting poked by a syringe! Most people
find it to be a painless and relaxing experience.
Kids are most apprehensive in response to their parents being apprehensive.
Sometimes children are even braver than adults when trying acupuncture for the
first time. Especially if Mom or Dad tries a needle or two as well, curiosity wins
out and most kids will be willing to give acupuncture a try.
Chinese medicine is a whole system, and acupuncture is just one part.
Nutrition therapy, Chinese herbs, massage, exercises and healthy habits are all
important branches of traditional Chinese medicine. When working with children,
I like to provide as much at-home care as possible to empower parents to treat
their child at home and limit the number of office visits they need.
In the next issue of Southern Oregon Family, I will explain what sort of
conditions traditional Chinese Pediatrics treats, and how it works.

Children’s Festival
“CREATE A SPARK”
T
his magical three day event will
take place July 12-14th at the
Britt Grounds in Jacksonville and is a
guaranteed amazing day out for the
entire family. The theme, “Create a
Spark!” was inspired by the Jackson
County Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Fizz, Boom, Read”.
Children and adults can look forward to over 35 booths (two which are new:
“Community Build” is an area using “Lego” style bricks to encourage building
and working together as a community. Children are encouraged to donate a
lego style brick from home to add to the structure and can write their name on
the brick. The Science booth will also be adding “Squishy Circuits”, this will be
lots of fun!!!) of hands-on arts and crafts and daily feeding of the beloved littereating dragons, Rosabelle and Pebbles, as well as our baby dragon, Lulu, whom
is anxious to receive your
recyclables! Older children
will enjoy crafts such as candle
making, pottery and wood
working;
while
younger
children will have a chance to
make their own puppets, sand
and easel art and have their
faces painted. The whole
family can look forward to
child-focused
stage
performances, yummy food
from our Dragon Deli and
activities like storytelling on the hill. We
always enjoy having some local
celebrities reading to the children,
including a few well known anchors!
Admission for this “Spark-tacular”
event is $3 per day for adults and
children. Our goal has always been to
offer an amazing day of entertainment
and education while keeping the cost to
families as reasonable as possible.
This year’s Festival promises to
inspire children of all ages and will help
us continue our mission of instilling a
love of reading in children; a gift that if
given in childhood, can last a lifetime.
For more information or to sign up as
a volunteer, visit the Guild website:

The Festival runs for a total of three sessions over a three day period:
Saturday, July 12th - 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, July 13th - 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
