Issue 3, 15 March 2013 ISSUE 1/2011 FEBRUARY 2011 From The Principal Dear Nagle Community, Recreational Spaces The Building Sub-Committee of the College Board has been considering the provision of recreational spaces for the students during recess and lunchtime, with the particular emphasis on shade. Parents’ and Friends’ Association The Parents’ and Friends’ Association had its first meeting this week and it produced some excellent conversation and feedback for the College. This really is a very gentle process and does not involve any fundraising and is simply a time when parents gather to meet with the Principal, to discuss the direction of the College. The P&F meets on the second Wednesday of each month (excluding holidays). You are always welcome and you can bring a friend along. CALAMITY JANE is almost here! 21-23 MARCH at Queen’s Park Theatre . Tickets are still available – contact QPT box office, or book on-line at http:// www.queensparktheatre.com.au Over the summer break, two shaded spaces were created and photos are attached, to provide both seating and shade for students during their breaks. Mr Declan Tanham Principal The Building Committee also has a number of other areas targeted for improvement for the students and this will be an ongoing activity for the group. All past pupils and staff of the local On Friday 8 March, four boys’ teams and one girls’ team competed in the Intermediate Tennis Cup at Geraldton Tennis Club. In extremely warm conditions, teams played in a round robin competition, including both singles and doubles matches, against teams from the Geraldton Grammar School. With the winning school progressing to the State Country Titles in Perth, competition was fierce and many close matches were contested. Congratulations go to the Nagle Boys Team 2 and Nagle Girls Team 1 who came away as victors in their divisions. Special mention goes to Maggie Cripps, Angelique Agulto , Trent Steele, Alex Capill and Cameron Keyser for their outstanding performances throughout the day. All students are to be commended on the manner in which they represented the College, with competition organisers commenting on the excellent sportsmanship and behaviour displayed by the Nagle competitors. Miss Kate Scally Health and Physical Education Teacher Endeavour Program The College is proud to have launched its second group of students involved in the campus ministry and leadership program, while on camp in Dongara last week. The ‘Endeavour' program, (formerly Remar), is designed to see students from Year 10 through to Year 12, become actively involved in the Nagle and Geraldton community. It focuses on developing service, leadership and bringing students together. decided to join, what they expect to get out of the program and come to know each other as a cohesive and united group. features, such as a nose and ears. Students then added further detail, such as a tongue, eyes and further accessories. A huge thank you must go to Ethan and Georgia, and to the staff who made the camp happen, Miss Wain, Mrs Connolly, Miss Pettigrew and Mr Ramos. Once the students had completed their sculptures, they were able to heat them in an oven at about 150 degrees, so that the polymer clay would set. We look forward to working with the Year 10s, and the Year 11s who are in the Blessed Edmund Rice pathway, this year. There is an exhibition of photographs of the sculptures, currently on display in the Nagle Library. This exhibition will be running for the next two weeks. Mr Damian Ramos Endeavour Coordinator Mr Jordan Andreotta Art Teacher Gremlins Workshop ‘Ghostly Workshop Students in Year 10 (known as the Nano Nagle Pathway) will be involved in charity fundraisers, community initiatives and the Relay for Life. They will also attend fortnightly meetings, which will develop them as whole people, through broadening their ideas and developing individual leadership qualities. Gremlins’ Sculpture On Thursday 7 March, a group of 22 Year 7 students, participated in the ‘Ghostly Gremlins’ sculpture workshop, which was held in the Nagle Art Learning Area. The workshop was presented by the Mullewa Arts Development Group, run by Debbie Crothers. This group offers a range of workshops to both Primary and High School students, as part of a community development project throughout the City of Greater Geraldton. Students who took part in the three hour workshop created sculptural pieces from polymer clay. Polymer clay is a non-toxic, manmade modelling compound that is extremely user friendly and suitable for small sculptures. This year’s Nano Nagle students were very fortunate to have been guided through their Dongara Launch Camp by two Year 11 students, Ethan Rogers and Georgia St Quintin. Ethan and Georgia were fundamental to the success of the camp, where students came to understand why they have Students started with a piece of brown polymer clay that would be used for the head of the ‘gremlin’ sculpture. This piece was then rolled out and stretched so that it would gain heat, which would make it easier to manipulate and shape. The next step was for students to stretch out part of the face to create Rottnest Expedition Year 12 Outdoor Education Expedition Last week, the Year 12 Outdoor Education class went on a self-sufficient four day expedition to Rottnest Island. Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science The Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science class, recently spent the afternoon at Holcim mine site near Walkaway. Whilst over there, we participated in many educational activities led by Mr Fariss and the education team. We looked at marine, fresh water swaps and terrestrial eco-systems, sustainability on the island, star gazing, orienteering and navigation, Indigenous history and intertidal quadrats. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to visit a working mine, which is part of their course in Year 12. The students were able to see the mine in action from the quarry site, all the way to the processing. They were also lucky enough to climb into the cab of one of the huge trucks. We had many wildlife encounters, trying to keep quokkas out of tents, hiding rubbish from crows and observing an abundance of marine life whilst snorkelling. Everyone who went on the trip thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Mr Ovens and the staff at Holcim who made the visit extremely worthwhile. Highlights included snorkelling with sting rays, lying on the beach watching shooting stars, following the snorkel trail at little Salmon Bay, Gauthier taking his stuffed quokka ‘Sam’ snorkelling, gourmet meals on the trangia, identifying macro invertebrates under the microscopes and experiencing a new part of Western Australia. Miss Sarah Baker Science Teacher A big thank you to all the students; we couldn’t fault you, your enthusiasm, humour and willingness to participate in everything made the expedition very successful. I would also like to thank Mr Fariss and Mr Johns for giving up their time and assisting with the expedition. Miss Bridie McCarthy Outdoor Education Teacher ‘Calamity Jane’ Calamity Jane on Radio There are only days to go before the College production, Calamity Jane takes to the stage at QPT. Last week, a selection of the cast visited the local ABC studios. As a promotional exercise, the students were invited on to Glenn Brandon’s Morning program. Year 11 Woodwork Course next batch of photos. Mr Corey Smith Woodwork Teacher Progress report on Jack Mills’ project… After a few very busy weeks of dressing timber, cutting to length, drilling holes and marking out joints, Jack has finally begun cutting the Domino Joints and fitting his table parts together. A lot of effort goes into working accurately and constructing each part before assembly and I’m happy to say that Jack’s work is coming together nicely. Cutting to length on the Dropsaw The main joint he is using is called a Domino Joint, the photo below depicts a domino. During ten minutes of air time, listeners were treated to live excerpts from the show, including a song and a scene. Cutting a Domino Joint ABC staff members said they were highly impressed by how professional the students sounded on air, thinking the excerpts were taken from an actual recording of the popular musical. If this experience is any indication, next week’s show at the QPT is sure to be a treat. Calamity Jane runs from Thursday 21 March until Saturday 23 March. Tickets can be purchased from QPT box office. Peter Fiorenza Public Relations Jack holding a Domino and the Domino Joiner Using a relatively new technology released in 2005, it combines the common Dowell Joint and a Biscuit Joint to create a domino looking piece which fits into the groove called a Mortise. The actual Domino is manufactured from compressed Beech and is an effective joint because of its speed, ease of use and strength. In the coming fortnight, Jack will be able to do a dry run of his project to give a better idea of how the Hall Table will come together. Stay tuned for the One of Jack’s cut Domino Joints into his Rail Interhouse Swimming Carnival The Interhouse Swimming Carnival is happening on Friday, 15 March. The Carnival is a twilight event commencing at 3.30pm and finishing at approximately 7:30pm. Students will be dismissed from school at 12:30pm, which means that those travelling on buses from out of town, may need to make arrangements to stay in town with friends. Students are asked to arrive at the Aquarena no later than 3:10pm. The entry fee for all students has been paid for by the College. Spectators will be $2 for entry. It is hoped that as many parents and friends as possible, can come along and enjoy the evening. Dress for the Carnival consists of PE uniform (shorts, shirt, HAT and thongs) and black one piece bathers for all girls in Years 7 to 12. Definitely no board shorts or surf gear. No streamers, zinc, radios, balloons and textas are allowed at the Aquarena. Students must bring their hats. The theme of the Carnival is PARTICIPATION. Students are encouraged to get involved and support their Houses. The Aquarena has recently been undergoing a transformation. I have been liaising with the Pool Manager and we have been assured that the facility will be ready for our Carnival. The new lights will be available for our use. Sandy areas will be dampened prior to the event to ensure that dust and sand don’t spread. Indoor Pool This year, we will be trialling the use of the indoor pool. Students in division 610 in Years 7 and 8 freestyle will be competing in the 25m pool. Leaving the Pool Area Leaving the pool area is not permitted. Students who are working or have sporting commitments can, hopefully, juggle these to make the event. Those students with work or other commitments must let their House Leaders know as soon as possible. If parents would like to take their children earlier, they must sign out at the pool entrance through the sign out book. NO student will be able to leave the pool early unless they have parent written permission or their parent takes them. Student Behaviour The expectation is that all students behave in a sensible and responsible way. Any student who does not follow instructions or is creating a risk will be sent to the isolation area, to be supervised. If their misbehaviour continues, their parents will be contacted and they will be asked to pick them up from the Carnival. Parking Parking will be opened up out the back of the pool complex, as this has been an issue in the past. There will be two car parking controllers to assist with parking management, access to the fire break for additional parking facilities and an alternate entrance for those parking along the fire break, to avoid long walking distances. Shade The College will be erecting additional shade for the parents, as well as tiered seating. There will also be shade on the east side for the students, and the Aquarena will provide shade at the south end of the pool in the student marshalling area. Refreshments An additional canteen facility is to be set up outside to ease the congestion inside. There will also be sausages and drinks available from the St Vincent de Paul BBQ at the south end of the pool. ACC Swimming Carnival Our Associated & Catholic Colleges (ACC) team which travels to Perth to compete at Challenge Stadium, Claremont against the other schools, will be chosen from the Interhouse Carnival. Training for the ACC squad is held from 6.30 – 7.15am Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings at the Nagle pool, followed by breakfast at the College canteen. The final ACC squad will include approximately five boys and five girls from each Year Group and is dependent on training, challenges and commitment to the squad. The students travel to Perth on Sunday 24 March and compete on Monday 25 March.
