Everest, a journey
not a destination
Recent news of how the Singapore Women’s
Everest Team successfully scaled the world’s tallest
mountain was a source of inspiration to many
Singaporeans. That five ladies hailing from a small
tropical island could accomplish such a feat is an
example we can all take heart from.
The conquest of Everest embodies the values of
passion, tenacity, resilience and enterprise. They
have demonstrated that by embracing these
values, dreams can become reality.
At Keppel, these are the values that define our
Can-do! spirit. Tenacity to overcome the odds is a
trait we not only recognise but encourage and in
the group, opportunities to exercise this quality
abound, at work or play.
The upcoming Keppel Games in August will
provide platform for healthy competition,
teamwork, camaraderie as well as individual
challenges. Already, Keppelites have started
training sessions as teams for the coveted title of
overall champion for the games.
Come September, the Clipper Round the World
Yacht Race will see four Keppel Ambassadors on a
sea-faring adventure to discover new horizons and
overcome personal limits as they crew the Uniquely
Singapore yacht sponsored by Keppel.
For most of us, overcoming obstacles is part and
parcel of our work, daily. Each of us may have our
own Everest to conquer, be it a major project, a
difficult colleague or an unconvinced customer. To
surmount these challenges requires patience,
resilience and not least, planning and enterprise.
available to empower Keppelites so that they can
move out of their comfort zones and take on new
challenges.
The recent Global General Management
Programme (see page 20 for story) aimed to
educate, empower and energise managers from
our offices worldwide with the exchange of ideas
and training.
While the Group is committed to investing
resources on training and development, as well as
providing platforms for growing careers, the onus
is on us to make the best use of these
opportunities.
This is even more pertinent in the current economic
crisis. Such times compel us to ready ourselves with
skills, mindset and enterprise to seek and seize new
opportunities in an already crowded market place.
Keppelites have, time and time again,
demonstrated their wherewithal to withstand any
whirlwinds that come their way. It is this Can-Do
spirit that has helped us to become the choice
solutions provider of urban living, be it through
the mammoth rigs we build, the premier properties
we develop or the state-of-the-art power and
water plants we construct.
Photographer Stefen Chow, who is currently doing
a photo essay on Keppel Shipyard’s Safety
Excellence 2010 journey, summitted Everest back
in 2005 and is a close friend to the Singapore
Women’s Everest Team. He shared, “People often
ask me if climbing Mount Everest has changed my
life: The act of scaling the mountain didn’t, but
the planning and training certainly did.”
Conquering Everest took the Singapore Women’s
Everest Team five years of planning and training.
Keppel too believes in the value of training. There
is a slew of diverse and robust HR programmes

Partnership in safety
Ensuring that everyone goes home safe at the end of the day is the real reward for Keppel FELS
For the successful
achievement of a total of
10 million manhours worked
without lost-time incidents
on three projects currently
being constructed for
Maersk Drilling, Keppel FELS
was awarded bonuses
totalling $80,000.
These projects include
one high efficiency jackup
rig and two deepwater

Senior management and
project teams from both
Keppel FELS and Maersk
Drilling commemorated
these achievements on
27 May 2009.
Mr Gregers Kudsk, VP &
Chief Technology Officer of
Maersk Drilling congratulated
the teams and underscored
Keppelite I June 2009
the importance of personal
responsibility
towards
ensuring safety at work.
Echoing Mr Kudsk’s safety
reminders, Mr Michael Chia,
ED of Keppel FELS, said,
“Safety is a cornerstone of
our operations, and a core
value shared by both Keppel
FELS and Maersk Drilling.
We must carry the safety
message with us every day,
everywhere we go, and strive
towards our zero-incident
goal.”
Earlier this year, Keppel FELS

ANOTHER MAMMOTH IN
THE MAKING
Amidst ongoing newbuilding
and repair works in the busy
Keppel FELS, another giant
vessel is in the making.
On 4 June 2009, a keellaying ceremony was held at
the dry dock of Keppel FELS’s
Pioneer Yard I, for the fifth
KFELS B Class jackup rig,
B311 (West Callisto) for
SeaDrill Limited (SeaDrill).
Bryan Toh, Project Manager,
Keppel FELS, said, “I look
forward to working closely
with Seadrill’s team for
another successful on-time,
within-budget delivery.”
Rigs built to the KFELS B Class
design are highly efficient
drilling platforms. With its
proven track record of global
operations, this design
continues to be the driller’s
choice for modern-day
jackup.
Listed on the Oslo Stock
Exchange, Seadrill is an
international offshore drilling
contractor providing services
within drilling and well
services.
For Keppel Singmarine, it laid
the keel of H350, a derrick
pipelay vessel for Global
Offshore International Ltd on
30 April 2009.The 163-metre
derrick pipelay vessel is a
multi-purpose construction
vessel to be equipped with
two units of 4500 KW
electric propulsion thrusters,
six units of positioning
thrusters, a 1200-tonne
crane and pipelay equipment
capable of operating in water
depths of 3,000 metres and
handling pipes of 60 inches
in diameter.
It has also successfully
launched H342, a platform
supply vessel (PSV).
Measuring 94 metres in
length, the vessel is equipped
with
diesel
electric
propulsion and dynamic
positioning systems (DP-2). It
is expected to be delivered to
Greatship Global Offshore
Services Pte Ltd later this
year.
UPLIFTING BARGE
PROJECT
The derrick lay barge,
which is currently under
construction at Keppel
Shipyard in two longitudinal
strips, was lifted and
launched into the sea last
month.
Construction of the barge
started some two months
ago for Bumi Armada
Berhad. It is designed for
pipe laying operations in
waters of up to 100 metres
in depth.
The barge will be built in two
separate longitudinal hull
strips at Keppel Shipyard
before being transported
through the narrow
Volga-Don River Canal
System to a shipyard in the
Caspian Sea for joining.
The port strip which weighs
about 2240 tonnes was lifted
by Asian Hercules I & II on
30 April 2009 while the
starboard strip was lifted on
1 May 2009. More recently,
the accommodation blocks
were lifted onto the strips
keeping the project well on
track to meet its delivery in
late August 2009 for transit
to the Caspian Sea.
Continues on page 6...
The KFELS B Class rig will
have the capability of
operating in water depths of
up to 400 ft, has a drilling
depth of 30,000 ft and can
accommodate 112 men.

Thumbing down incidents
Keppel FELS has reduced its
overall number of incidents
from 75 cases a year ago to
54 in June 2009. Hand and
finger injuries, which make
up a substantial portion of
the incidents, also dropped
from 33 cases to 26 during
the same period.
These results were revealed
at the culmination of the
recent Health Safety

on hand and finger injuries
in June.
This year’s campaign sported
an element of fun with
educational games and

Dressing the Little Red Boat
Keppelite chats with Nguyen Huu Huan on his design for Uniquely Singapore.
What inspired you to
design for Uniquely
Singapore?
I am very moved by
Singaporean pride and spirit.
Although I am a Vietnamese,
I have been living here for
four years and it is like my
second home. If I were a
Singaporean, I would be very
proud to see the national
colours flying high when the
yacht is racing on the waters.
What in your opinion is
the Singapore spirit?
The Singapore spirit, to me,
is about dynamism and
strength. Not only is
Singapore a friendly city, it is
also refreshing to see many
nationalities residing side by
side; their diverse backgrounds
and experiences form an
interesting social tapestry.
Is there anything about
the country itself that
make you feel connected,
or that you can identify
with?
Singapore is a multicultural
society and its openness and
inclusiveness have made me
feel at home.
Can you share more on
your design concept?
Red and white are the
national colours, while I
represented the nature of
yacht racing and the
Singapore spirit with the
waves. When the boat is on
the waters, the flowing
motion of the sail is conveyed
by the lion’s mane in the
wind. I intend for the design
to be seamless, flowing from
the hull to the sail.

Finding time for family
As we work harder during
these times of economic
uncertainty, it is important
that we do not forget that
family relationships, like all
relationships, need constant
nurturing and tending to.
In its drive to encourage
work-life balance and
strengthening of family ties,
Keppel Telecommunications

necessarily mean the person
understands or agrees with
you, but it is merely as
an acknowledgement of
understanding what you
have said.
“Having learnt that, I now
request for my subordinates
to repeat in their own
understanding, the instruction
or tasks to be executed, to
ensure that we are on the
same page,” she added.
On her first overseas work
posting, the gregarious
Nancy admits, “Initially, I was
quite worried about having
to relocate my family,
especially my two children
who are seven and nine years
old respectively.
“When I arrived, I found
Hanoi a place with lots of
scenic views and friendly
people. The living and
schooling conditions are also
not as bad as I had expected
and my children have
adapted well. So for my
advice is always have an
open mind, make an effort
to know the locals instead of
mingling only with the expat
community, and embrace the
differences.”
Practicing
what
she
preaches, Nancy shared that
she has made the effort to
bond with the local staff by
attending their weddings,
joining them in local festive
celebrations such as the
Vietnamese New Year, and
even
witnessing
the
acceptance ceremony of a
staff as a member in the
Communist Party.
Nancy is also ever mindful of
what it means to be a
Keppelite postee, ready to
exhibit an inclusive mindset.
“Respect the skills and
knowledge that the local
team has to offer, and be
willing to share one’s skills
and knowledge in order to
build mutual respect,” she
advised. keppelite

Striking up friendships
Not even the wet morning
weather could dampen the
spirits of the students from
the Association for Persons
with Special Needs (APSN) on
13 June 2009.
The group had been eagerly
anticipating to spend time
during the school holidays
with the Keppel Volunteers
at the Jurong Superbowl.
Before pounding the lanes,
the Volunteers patiently
explained the rules of the
game and divided the
students into groups for the
friendly competition.
Despite the various levels of
bowling skills amongst the
APSN students, excitement
ran high at the alley.
During the first few rounds,
many started off with gutter
balls but with some guidance
and encouragement from
the Volunteers, the students
started to improve their aim
as well as their scores.
One of the petite participants
initially did not even have the
strength to grasp the
bowling ball. She felt
disheartened and wanted to
give up trying as she was
unable to score any points.
To keep her in the game and
inculcate a fighting spirit, her
Keppel Volunteer buddy
suggested an alternative
method of ball-rolling, such
that it would not require
as much strength out of
her. She persevered and
completed all 10 rounds of
bowling, to her delight.
Keppel Volunteers had
thoughtfully brought along a
colour printer to ensure that
everyone could bring back
with them, photographs
taken with their teams as
keepsakes. These were
distributed over lunch where
the students recounted
excitedly their bowling
experience.
The Keppel Volunteers
certainly scored on friendship
and goodwill by giving the
students a ball of a time.

Keppel FELS has delivered
ENSCO 8501 to long-time
customer, Ensco International
Incorporated (Ensco) with a
sterling safety record.
The second in a series of
seven deepwater semis being
constructed exclusively by
Keppel FELS for Ensco
International Incorporated
(Ensco), ENSCO 8501 will be
chartered by Noble Energy
(Noble) and Nexen Petroleum
(Nexen). The first deepwater
rig, ENSCO 8500, was
delivered in June 2008.
Mr Dan Rabun, Chairman,
President and Chief Executive
Officer of Ensco, said, “We
are pleased with the
successful completion of
ENSCO 8501, made possible
by the excellent teamwork
and synergy with our

of Mexico (GoM) as early as
October 2009. The energy
rich region of GoM covers an
area of about 1.5 million
square kilometres and is
bounded by the United
States of America, Mexico
and Cuba.
Mr Tong Chong Heong,
Chief Executive Officer of
Keppel Offshore & Marine,
said, “Keppel and Ensco
have enjoyed an enduring
partnership of nearly 15
years, during which we have
worked closely to build up
and renew Ensco’s rig fleet.
The incident-free delivery of
ENSCO 8501 is the hallmark
of our win-win relationship
with Ensco and Keppel
FELS’s continuous drive for
operational excellence.”
Meanwhile, the first
deepwater rig of this Series,
ENSCO 8500, has successfully
commenced operations in the
Gulf of Mexico under a fouryear contract with Anadarko
and Eni.
“Over the past several
years, we have strategically
committed more than
US$3 billion to the expansion
of our ultra-deepwater fleet
to better serve the needs of
our customers. Today, we
achieved a milestone in
the implementation phase of
the ENSCO 8500 Series ®
deepwater initiative with
the commencement of
operations by ENSCO 8500
under a long-term drilling
The incident-free delivery of ENSCO 8501 is the hallmark of Keppel’s 15-year win-win
relationship with Ensco and its continuous drive for operational excellence
contract signed in September
2005,” said Mr Rabun.
“Our
ultra-deepwater
semisubmersible drilling rigs
complement our premium
jackup fleet and will become
a progressively larger
segment of Ensco’s total rig
fleet around the world,” he
added.
The ENSCO 8500 Series® of
ultra-deepwater rigs are
capable of drilling in 8,500
ft of water, and may be
further upgraded to 10,000
ft water-depth capability.
They also have a drilling
depth of 35,000 ft and can
accommodate up to 150
workers.
Suitable for deployment in
deepwater fields worldwide,
the ENSCO 8500 Series ®
streamlines operational
functionality, training, spare
part requirements, repairs
and maintenance to control
costs and enhance the overall
reliability of rig operations.
“As the exclusive builder of
Ensco’s 8500 Series® semis,
we are confident that this
fine fleet will raise the
benchmark for cost-effective
ultra-deepwater drilling,”
Mr Tong affirmed.
In March 2009, ENSCO 8501
was named in the presence
of Singapore’s Senior
Minister of State (SMS) for
National Development,
Ms Grace Fu, by Mrs Lanita
C. Weisinger, wife of Mr Don
