I see this as essential for dissemination of research, stimulation for new ideas and strategic networking with publishers and peers, as well as for professional development. I also regularly engage in knowledge transfer through my professional development talks to English Language Teachers. In total, I have presented my research in 22 countries in Asia; Europe and North, Central and South America. In all, 37 of these talks have been as invited keynote / plenary speaker across 20 countries. Cambridge University Press funded three international lecture tours to showcase my work with them: 1) a ten-day lecture tour of Japan (2006), 2) a six-day a lecture tour of Central America (2007), which included keynotes at conferences in Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico (where I gave a keynote to over 1,000 delegates), and 3) a six-day lecture tour of the South of Italy (2007). Additionally, at a local institutional and Shannon Consortium level, in my role as Director of Teaching and Learning, I regularly organise and present at seminars, workshops and conferences. In their design, they require a carefully drawn up representative matrix so as to ensure the optimum relevance as a research tool. I have been central to the fundraising, contract negotiation, matrix design, building, transcription, coding and project managing of four corpora, three of which were funded by Cambridge University Press: Development Period Corpus and description Funding body 2010 – 2013 Newcastle Corpus of Academic Spoken English Cambridge University Press (NUCASE) One and a half million words of spoken data recorded in Newcastle University, in small group teaching contexts, stratified by discipline. This allows for the empirical analyses of student-led communities of practice across disciplines. Cambridge University Press, Nottingham University, Mary Immaculate College and research students of Prof. Steve Walsh and Dr Anne O’Keeffe, in perpetuity. 2009 2012 Cambridge Cambridge Limerick and Shannon (CLAS) One-million words of spoken data recorded in University Press Shannon College of Hotel Management. These data feed into the greater Cambridge University-led English Profile project, which aims to empirically profile competencies in English in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). They are also part of the Cambridge English Corpus. Cambridge University Press, Mary Immaculate College and Shannon College of Hotel Management and research students of Dr Anne O’Keeffe, in perpetuity. 2005 2006 Cambridge University The Limerick-Belfast Corpus of Academic Cambridge University Press, Press, Queen’s University Spoken English (LIBEL) Belfast, Mary Immaculate One-million words of academic spoken data MIC and QUB recorded in Limerick and Belfast, transcribed and College and research coded for the analysis of Academic English. students of Prof. Steve Walsh and Dr Anne O’Keeffe, in perpetuity. 1998 – 2000 Limerick Corpus of Irish English (LCIE) One-million words of spoken Irish English, transcribed and coded to parallel the Cambridge and Nottingham Corpus of Discourse in English (CANCODE) University of Limerick (University of Limerick Foundation), MIC (Seed Funding) Owner/Research rights and access to data University of Limerick and Mary Immaculate College and research students of Dr Fiona Farr and Dr Anne O’Keeffe, in perpetuity. 25 The IVACS Research Centre ( http://www.ivacs.mic.ul.ie/ ) Background In an attempt to build a critical mass of researchers interested in the application of Corpus Linguistics to the study of language in use across different contexts, situations, and varieties of English, I established the Inter-Varietal Applied Corpus Studies (IVACS) Research Centre in 2002, at Mary Immaculate College. Its goal was to establish a formal inter-institutional research network between Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, University of Nottingham and Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), (an informal collaborative research relationship had been in existence between corpus linguists in these intuitions since 1998). The IVACS network grew quickly and now links over 35 corpus linguists across 21 institutions. The aims of the IVACS research centre and network are: • to bring together a critical mass of researchers with a common focus on Corpus Linguistics research. • to nurture a critical mass of researchers, working within a community of practice, to produce international peer-reviewed research outputs. • to optimise corpus resources by data- and expertise-sharing. • to mentor postgraduate students through inter-institutional collaboration, whereby they benefit from methodology seminars across institutions as well as synergies gained through contact with PhD students and researchers in other institutions. List of institutions linked to Mary Immaculate College through the IVACS research network: • • • • • • • • • • Bath Spa University Cardiff University Durham University Leeds Beckett University Maître de conférences à l’INALCO, Paris-Sorbonne Newcastle University Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) Queen’s University Belfast Shannon College of Hotel Management (NUIG) Universidad Autónoma de Madrid • • • • • • • • • • University of Aberdeen University of Cambridge University of Edinburgh University of Extremadura University of Limerick University of Malta University of Nottingham University of Stirling University of Tokyo University of Valencia 26 The network has grown strategically so as to broaden its expertise base through links with key corpusbased researchers and research centres, especially in the U.K. and Europe. This has facilitated the pooling of research resources (especially corpora) and has resulted in the branding of the "IVACS network" within the corpus linguistics community. It has also resulted in over 15 co-authored books, almost 50 co-authored journal articles, 5 journal co-editorships and almost 70 co-authored chapters in books, as well as numerous conference paper collaborations. Research outputs and activities IVACS publishing partnership with Routledge In 2013, the network negotiated an IVACS book series with Routledge publishers to publish monographs from IVACS network researchers. The IVACS series was launched in 2014 and is entitled Routledge Applied Corpus Linguistics. It is a series of monographs studies exhibiting cutting-edge research in the field of corpus linguistics and its applications to real-world language problems. Researchers from the IVACS network are invited to submit proposals to the Editorial Panel, of which I am chair. The series is edited by IVACS members Prof. Ronald Carter and Prof. Michael McCarthy and all editorial royalties go to the IVACS Research Centre at MIC. Titles published and commissioned in the Routledge Applied Corpus Linguistics Series to date: • • • • Collins, Luke (2015) Language, Corpus and Empowerment – applications to deaf education, healthcare and online discourses. Timmis, Ivor (In preparation) Historical Corpus Research on Spoken Language: The Bolton/Worktown Corpus’. London: Routledge. Conferences and Symposia Since its inception, two events have been central to bringing IVACS researchers together: 1) the Annual One-Day IVACS Symposium, and 2) the Biennial International IVACS conference: • Annual One-Day IVACS Symposia Since its establishment, the IVACS Research Centre has brought researchers together for an annual oneday symposium. The aim of the symposia is to nurture new researchers to present their research along 27 with senior researchers, in a supportive plenary setting. The mentoring focus of the IVACS network is a high priority and for many flourishing Corpus Linguists this symposium was where they presented their first paper at the early stage of their research but they did so side-by-side with internationallyestablished researchers. In total, 15 IVACS Symposia have taken place to date and the 16th, in 2016, will be hosted by Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona. The venue for these events rotates annually: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 16th IVACS Annual Symposium, Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, 22nd January, 2016. 15th IVACS Annual Symposium, Shannon College of Hotel Management, 20th February, 2015. 14th IVACS Annual Symposium, Queen’s University Belfast, 23th January, 2014. 13th IVACS Annual Symposium, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, 17th January, 2013. 12th IVACS Annual Symposium, University of Cambridge, 13th January, 2012. 11th IVACS Annual Symposium, Newcastle University, 21st January, 2011. 10th IVACS Annual Symposium, Leeds Metropolitan University, 22nd January, 2010. 9th IVACS Annual Symposium, University of Edinburgh, 22nd January, 2009. 8th IVACS Annual Symposium, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, 23rd January, 2008. 7th IVACS Annual Symposium, University College Dublin, 9th March, 2007. 6th IVACS Annual Symposium, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, February 10th, 2006. 5th IVACS Annual Symposium, Queen's University Belfast, February 4th, 2005. 4th IVACS Annual Symposium, Queen's University Belfast, 23rd January, 2004. 3rd IVACS Annual Symposium, University of Nottingham, 24th January, 2003. 2nd IVACS Annual Symposium, Queen's University Belfast, 25th, January, 2002. 1st IVACS Annual Symposium, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, 16th November, 2001. • Biennial International Conferences The IVACS Research Centre hosts an international conference biennially, with the venue rotating between member institutions. These events usually attract between 150 and 200 international researchers and have led to journal special issues, and other publications. To date, there have been seven international conferences and the next one will be hosted by Bath Spa University, in June 2016: • • • • • • • • 8th IVACS International Conference, Bath Spa University, 23 – 24th June, 2016. 7th IVACS International Conference, Newcastle University, 19 – 20th June, 2014. 6th IVACS International Conference, Leeds Metropolitan University, June 21st-22nd, 2012. 5th IVACS International Conference, University of Edinburgh, 18th -19th June, 2010. 4th IVACS International Conference, University of Limerick, 13th-14th June, 2008. 3rd IVACS International Conference, University of Nottingham, 23rd - 24th June 2006. 2nd IVACS International Conference, Queens University Belfast, 25th-26th June, 2004. 1st IVACS International Conference, University of Limerick, June 14th -15th, 2002. 28 Postgraduate examination and supervision PhD theses examined (Total 9) 2013 Eric Lin University of Nottingham Intercultural Communication and Adolescent Learners: A Corpus-based Approach to Online and Face-to-face Interaction 2013 Helen Doherty Trinity College Dublin Shifting Fields: A Critical Analysis of Film Studies, Media Studies and Media Literacy 1990 to 2009 2013 Pascal Maher* University of Limerick The Rhetorical Functions of Semi-technical Language in Postgraduate Academic Legal Writing [*‘internal’ examiner] 2012 Warrin Laopongharn The Modal “can” as a Hedging Device in Thai Student Writing Newcastle University 2011 Pino Cutrone University of Reading Towards the Learning of Listener Responses in the Japanese EFL Context 2010 Andrew Caines University of Cambridge You talking to me?
