COURSE:
General Biology II BIO102
DATE: Spring 2015
INSTRUCTOR: Nickerson
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a continuation of BIO-101 or BIO-113. The course
includes: gene expression, biotechnology, evolution and biological diversity, population ecology, and
ecosystem dynamics. Students will participate in an extended field research project and compose a
scientific report to present and evaluate their findings. Laboratory fee required. 45 hours of lecture and
45 hours of lab.
TEXTBOOK: Campbell BIOLOGY 10th edition, Reece, Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky,
Jackson. Publisher: Pearson Higher Ed.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Students will apply knowledge of specific course content to enhance understanding of personal and
societal scientific issues.
2. Students will be able to understand and apply the scientific method and use critical thinking skills in
order to generate, graph, analyze and interpret scientific data and reports.
3. Students will use verbal and writing skills to clearly communicate biological concepts in a
comprehensive scientific report.
4. Students will apply computer and information literacy skills in the preparation of a scientific report
5. Students will access, process, analyze and synthesize scientific information.
MINIMUM CLOCK HOURS REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE:
To earn one academic credit at HCC, students are required to complete a minimum of 37.5 clock hours
(45 fifty-minute “academic” hours) of coursework per semester. Those hours of coursework may be
completed through a combination of hours within the classroom and hours outside the classroom. Certain
courses may require more than the 37.5 minimum hours of coursework per credit.
For most classes, students should expect to do at least 2 hours of coursework outside of class for
each hour of in-class coursework.
