Rock Cycle Project (20 Points)
Objective: Display your expertise of the rock cycle and the processes that make-up the rock cycle.
Description: I want to know how well you understand the rock cycle. You can display your knowledge of the rock cycle
in many different ways, but in this particular project you are going to use the iPads App called Sonic Pics to create digital
storyboard. This will be a digital story about the changing and remaking of rocks into a new, different rocks. You should start
with a brief introduction about the rock cycle and then begin with a rock (any type) and take it through one complete rock
cycle (e.g. igneous  sedimentary  metamorphic  igneous). Your ending slide should be the same general type of rock as
the one you began your story with. You must show that you understand what at least 20 of the following 36 vocabulary
words mean within the context of the rock cycle. So this is not just a list of definitions, but as you describe the rock cycle
you should show mastery of these words. Probably the best/easiest way to do this is to describe the events and processes that
must take place for a rock to start as one of the basic 3 rock types and change from that type to another, then to another, and
then finally back to the original rock that it was at the beginning. Please seek help from your teacher if these directions
confuse you in any way.
Vocabulary Words to include in project: rock cycle, physical weathering, chemical weathering, erosion, deposition,
compaction, cementation, lithification, sedimentary rock, foliated metamorphic rock, nonfoliated metamorphic rock, regional
/contact / hydrothermal metamorphism, intrusive igneous rock, extrusive igneous rock, bedding, graded bedding, crossbedding, clastic, biochemical (or organic), chemical, porosity, evaporate, partial melting, fractional crystallization, Bowen’s
reaction series, lava, magma, porphyritic texture, vesicular texture, basaltic, granitic, ultrabasic, intermediate.
* Ten points will be given based on the quality of the final product and a half point will be given for showing your
understanding of 20 of the above vocabulary terms within the context of the rock cycle.
