Chen Guangcheng, Chinese Civil Rights Lawyer and Activist, will receive the 2013 Katharine and George Alexander Center Law Prize on Monday, March 19th at 6 p.m. Chen Guangcheng, known to many of his countrymen as “the barefoot lawyer,” was born in the village of Dongshigu in 1972. Blind since infancy, illiterate until his late teens, he nonetheless taught himself law and became a fiery advocate for countless Chinese who had no voice. His escape last spring from his jailers in China made headlines around the world, and he remains uncompromising in his commitment to democracy and human rights. In 2006 Chen was named by Time Magazine as one of the world’s most 100 influential people, and he was the winner of the prestigious 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership. In 2012 he won awards from the Lantos Foundation and Human Rights First. He now lives with his wife and two children in New York City. Register or learn more here.
