Ms. Carla Sindlinger-LaLonde
Commissioner
Federal Election Committee
1 Federal Way
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Commissioner Sindlinger-LaLonde:
I am currently a first-year student at the University of Michigan Law School and am interested in
becoming a summer law clerk in your office. I have a deep interest in the electoral process on the state
and federal level. Moreover, I am committed to using my law degree to protect the rights of all
citizens wishing to exercise their right to vote.
Prior to entering law school, I studied History at the University of Ponoma in Ponoma, CA. In
focusing on American politics I acquired a deep appreciation of the importance of the electoral process
in the lives of all Americans. Inspired by my studies, I sought and won election as the Membership
Chair of the University of Michigan Law School Republican Students Society. This position has
allowed me to work with likeminded individuals in promoting the importance of registering to vote
and exercising that right.
In addition to my extracurricular activities, my two semester Legal Practice curriculum continues to
teach me the skills necessary for effective and efficient legal research and writing. Based on my
performance in that class, I am confident in my ability to synthesize and analyze legal research and
write interoffice memos outlining both sides of an argument. Furthermore, my first semester
Constitutional Law class has given me valuable insight into the electoral process and its underlying
democratic theories.
I have enclosed a copy of my resume for your review. I will be in Washington DC from January 39, 2011 and would welcome an opportunity to interview with you during that time. Thank you for
your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Casius Walters

Dear [name of contact],
I am a first-year law student at University of Michigan Law School, and am interested in a summer
internship position with [name of organization]. I have long been attracted to international human
rights, and am confident my past experiences, skills, and enthusiasm would benefit your organization.
My experiences prior to law school fueled my interest in international human rights and led me to
pursue a law degree. As an intern for the Human Rights Division of the Permanent Mission of the
Republic of Korea to the United Nations in Geneva, I was responsible for attending human rights
conferences and writing reports for XYZ. Further, I conducted research on issues ranging from X to Y
and presented my research to policy makers from more than 50 countries. At Refuge P-NAN, I
became intimately familiar with the issues that refugees face as I helped our clients seek refugee status
in immigration court and resettle in our community. Through that experience, I witnessed how
individuals are affected by commissions and treaties created by international NGOs. These
experiences deepened my knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian affairs,
strengthened my desire to pursue public interest work, and gave me a broader view on how
governmental and non-governmental actors interact with one another to influence the world.
In addition to fostering my passion for international human rights, my experiences before and during
law school have also given me the technical skills necessary to contribute to the important work of
[name of organization]. While interning in Geneva, I closely analyzed different issues identified in the
Durban Declaration and conducted extensive research on current human rights issues such as
Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. My analytical and writing skills have been further honed
through Michigan Law’s intensive year-long Legal Practice class, where I am learning the skills
necessary to be an effective and efficient legal researcher and communicator.
I appreciate your consideration of my application for a summer internship position. Enclosed is a copy
of my resume, a brief unedited writing sample and names of references. I will send you my transcript
as soon as it becomes available in February 201x. I will be in Korea from December 19th to January
8th, and I would welcome the opportunity to meet in person. I look forward to speaking with you.
Sincerely,
Jane Smith

Maya Samms, Esq.
Chief Recruiter
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
100 F Street, NE
Washington, DC 20549
Dear Ms. Samms:
I am a first-year summer starter law student at the University of Michigan Law School and would like
to apply for the Summer 2011 Honors Law Program. As a detail-oriented person with analytical and
writing experience, I have the qualifications necessary to excel in the Summer Honors Law Program.
I would like to work for the Securities and Exchange Commission because I am interested in a
government position where I am able to use my business background to assist in regulating the
securities markets and securing Americans’ investments. I am currently exploring my interest in
business law by taking courses regarding public corporations, administrative law, and accounting for
lawyers. As a summer starter, I will have completed three semesters of law school by the Summer of
2011. My academic background and previous work experience, including an internship in the
information technology department of Lehman Brothers and approximately three years analytical
experience at market researcher Ulivi & Associates, would help me in carrying out the mission of the
SEC.
I have sharpened my analytical and writing skills through my Summer 2009 judicial externship with the
Honorable Erithe Smith at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California.
I demonstrated these skills by researching law and writing memoranda advising the Judge, including
memos regarding whether to reopen debtors’ bankruptcy cases that have been dismissed. I also
wrote a Memorandum of Decision explaining Judge Smith’s ruling in a bench trial regarding the
dischargeability of debt stemming from the plaintiff’s allegations of misrepresentation, embezzlement,
and conversion. My experience this past summer shows that I would be successful with the research
and writing demands of the Summer Honors Law Program.
As a participant in the Summer Honors Law Program, I would use my strengths in analysis and writing
in order to fulfill the needs of the Securities and Exchange Commission. My résumé is attached for
your review. I would be happy to meet with you and discuss my qualifications further. Thank you for
your consideration.
Sincerely,

333 Clear Avenue
Washington, D.C. 10000
Dear Ms. Duncan:
I am a first-year law student at The University of Michigan Law School, and am interested in a
summer intern position with the Environmental Law Group. I have long been interested in
environmental issues, and am committed to using my law degree to advocate on behalf of
protecting the environment.
Prior to entering law school, I worked at a small law firm specializing in environmental law. In
one case, I assisted attorneys in advising a small corporation of its compliance requirements
under the Clean Water Act. Moreover, my experience analyzing several environmental impact
studies provided me with useful technical knowledge in the environmental field. This
experience, as well as my education and my work as an editor of The Tulane Times, helped me
strengthen my writing and analytical skills. In addition, I am taking the Law School’s rigorous
two semester legal research and writing class.
My work as a peer counselor at the Women’s Crisis Center afforded me valuable experience in
advising clients, problem-solving on a variety of crisis intervention issues, and in educating
others by writing a training manual. In addition, my work at the Crisis Center enabled me to
strengthen my oral communication skills. At Software, Inc., I developed my organizational and
interpersonal skills, and worked with financial records.
I believe that I have gained the skills that will be an asset to your organization. I have enclosed a
resume for your review. I will be in Washington, D.C. over the December break, and would
enjoy the opportunity to meet with you to discuss further my qualifications. I will call you next

Lansing, MI 48909
Dear Attorney General Schuette:
I am a first-year law student at University of Michigan Law School and would like to
apply for an internship this coming summer with the Attorney General’s Medicare Fraud Office.
I grew up in Michigan and have worked here since graduating from college in 2006. I am
committed to a public service career in Michigan in order to make access to health care available
to everyone.
Prior to starting law school, I worked at Detroit Community Services as a Public Policy
and Legislative Specialist. My primary area of responsibility was emerging health policy issues.
My duties included coordinating an annual legislative conference attended by health care
providers, health and human service organization professionals, and members of the legislature.
This experience gave me a view of the organizational and substantive problems faced in
providing health care to low income individuals. In addition, working with these groups fueled
my desire to go to law school. Furthermore, I will be taking a class on health care regulation this
coming semester.
I believe my experience will enable me to be an asset to your office. I have enclosed a
copy of my resume for your review. I am available to interview after my last exam on December
18th. Thank you for your time and consideration. I will contact your office in two weeks to
arrange a mutually agreeable interview time.

Dear
I am a second-year student at the University of Michigan Law School, and I am interested in obtaining a
summer associate position at your firm’s New York City office. I am attracted to your firm because of the
depth and scope of its international practices. While growing up in Hungary I became fluent in both
Hungarian and German. I believe my international experience would allow me to contribute to your
office and clients.
This past summer I participated in Altheimer & Grey’s summer associate program in Budapest. While
most of my assignments involved researching and writing legal memos on corporate law issues, I also
drafted loan documents and purchase contracts. Prior to law school, I interned for a non-profit
organization in London, researching and drafting pleadings for cases brought before the European Court
of Human Rights. Furthermore, I worked closely with attorneys to prepare in court examinations of
expert witnesses, which also helped me learn about the litigation process and litigation strategies.
This semester I am focusing on business-related classes including Commercial Transactions, Enterprise
Organizations, and Securities Regulation. Next summer I look forward to developing my competence in
the corporate area while working on complex European Union transactions. I am also familiar with the
nuances of German and Hungarian cultures and have a unique appreciation for global perspectives.
I believe these qualities will benefit your firm.
Enclosed are my resume and transcript. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about my
experience and qualifications. I will be in New York City from October 15-19, 2008;
I will contact you in two weeks to see if it is possible to interview with you during that time.
