Welcome to North Central College’s
2012-2013 Fine and Performing Arts Season.
W
elcome to another great year in the arts
at North Central College. We want to
start by thanking everyone who helped make this
a successful program. With 14 performances
completely sold out last season, we hope to build
on the success. Thank you for supporting the arts in
Naperville at North Central College. If you’ve not
yet experienced a performance at the greatest arts
facilities in the area, you’re in for a treat! We recently
presented American rock band, Switchfoot. One of
the band members, Chad Butler, summed up the
experience all visiting artists have here. “We had a
great experience here at North Central College. The
venue, the crew, the hospitality ... It was all wonderful
... But, the best part of today was definitely the people
here. We really enjoyed ourselves. Thank you for
having us.” I look forward to another great season!
After Celtic Woman Christmas, one patron told me
I needed to retire. He could not see how we could
possibly top what we had done with that concert.
Instead of retiring, I decided to bring Celtic Woman
“A Christmas Celebration–The Symphony Tour” back
for a second season. And since that show sold out
so quickly, we have added a second performance
this year. If you were among the lucky ones who
saw that magnificent performance, here is your
chance to come back—and bring your friends.
We are always looking to bring you the best variety
of artists, so we offer something for everyone. If
you are a fan of a more contemporary sound, then
join us at Eric Hutchinson, Five for Fighting or Marc
Cohn. The Wentz Concert Hall stage will be graced
with one of the finest performers in the business
today, Bernadette Peters. After seeing her perform
in Pfeiffer Hall, I cannot wait to hear her sing in the
intimate perfection of Wentz Concert Hall.
The company founded by the man who is the reason
I have a career in the arts, Giordano Dance Chicago,
will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a presentation
in April. Ballroom dance fans shouldn’t miss this
performance! The company will teach a master
class in ballroom dance immediately following the
show, so get ready to literally dance with the stars.
North Central College will host a performance by
the incomparable country superstar Sara Evans, a
rollicking Christmas with the Oak Ridge Boys, and
even the Russian National Orchestra and Vienna
Boys Choir for our classical music fans. With this
lineup, why would you go anywhere else?
The entire 2012-2013 season will be spectacular!
Take a look through the pages of this season’s
brochure and contact the North Central College
Box Office to buy your tickets today. Be part of
something great. And thank you for supporting
the arts at North Central College.

“What a beautiful, beautiful room.
It sounds amazing. I love this hall.”
Yo-Yo Ma, cellist, onstage, Oct. 1, 2011
“We’re trying to get out to the suburbs
more, and that level of beauty at Wentz,
of the venue and of the sound, doesn’t
exist elsewhere in Chicago.”

Five For Fighting
Thursday, September 27, 8 p.m.
Pfeiffer Hall
Price Levels* $65, $55, $50
Singer-songwriter John Ondrasik has spent the past decade
writing deeply personal songs that include social messages,
invoke the human spirit and make an emotional connection.
With the past four albums by Five For Fighting, the name under
which he records and performs, Ondrasik has seen multitudes of
successes. Five For Fighting’s breakthrough came in 2001 with
the Grammy-nominated song “Superman,” and he proceeded to
become a part of the American songbook with the hit “100 Years.”
His latest album “Slice” takes stories of friends, family and even
American servicemen, and sets them to music filled with the
spirit of the great songs of his youth. It’s a diary in which Ondrasik
speaks his mind about current issues, experiences and sentiments,
while setting those thoughts to music.

Wentz Concert Hall
Price Levels* $50, $40
As Eric Hutchinson journeyed toward the making
of his new album “Moving Up Living Down,” the
delightfully witty and supremely wise follow-up
to his hit debut “Sounds Like This,” he developed
a very simple rule regarding new songs: he wanted
people to sing and dance along with them. As the
D.C.-raised singer, pianist and guitarist traveled
worldwide over the course
of several years, word of
mouth about his irresistible
songs and engaging presence
brought out consistently
growing concert crowds.
His certified Gold tune
“Rock & Roll” turned into
an international hit, and
the exuberant folk-pop
bounce of his latest single,
“Watching You Watch Him,”
debuted on the season
premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Based on the immortal book by
Margery Williams, the classic tale
of a toy bunny that longs to become
real comes to life for a whole new
generation in Theatreworks USA’s
wonder-filled, interactive production.
Just as the velveteen rabbit becomes
real, the audience’s imagination
converts three actors and their simple props into a
wise old rocking horse, a cavalcade of mechanical
playthings, a kind-hearted fairy and, of course, a
stuffed rabbit that is transformed by the love of
a young boy.

“Stormy Weather: The Lena Horne Project” is a “living,

images from James Gavin’s wealth of material to give us
a defining portrait of singer and civil rights activist Lena
Horne. From her Cotton Club glory days
and the back lots of Hollywood studios
to the glitzy but bigoted resorts of
Las Vegas, this behind-the-scenes look
at an American icon is as much a story
of American dream limitations as it is a
masterful, ground-breaking biography. Mary
Wilson, founding member of the Supremes,
stars in this multimedia concert.

British composers are showcased in the DuPage Symphony
Orchestra’s second concert in the “Great Expectations” series,
bringing great music, exciting performances and extraordinary
soloists to the stage. William Walton’s spirited “Portsmouth
Point Overture,” revealing the conspicuous influence of
American jazz, provides a fitting introduction for Ralph Vaughan
Williams’ touching “Songs of Travel”—skillful settings of nine
poems by Robert Louis Stevenson sung by Chicagoland favorite
Jeffrey Ray. Sir Edward Elgar’s justly famous “Enigma Variations,”
with its affectionate musical portrayals of 14 of the composer’s
closest friends, concludes this colorful and appealing program.

fatal shooting just weeks before, “Parade” is his most

Vienna Boys Choir
Sunday, March 17, 6 p.m.
Wentz Concert Hall, Price Levels* $60, $50
Historians have settled on 1498 as the founding date
of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle (court orchestra) and,
consequently, the Vienna Boys Choir. Until 1918, the choir
sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, private
concerts and functions and on state occasions. Today,
about 100 choristers between ages 10 and 14 are divided
into four touring choirs that give some 300 concerts and
performances each year before nearly half a million people.
The choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to
contemporary music. Together with members of the Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus,
the Vienna Boys Choir maintains the tradition of the imperial
musicians providing music for the Sunday Mass in Vienna’s
Imperial Chapel, as the choir has done since 1498.

“The Emigrants”
March 21, 22, 23, 7:30 p.m.
March 23, 24, 2 p.m.
Theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall
Adults $30, Students and Seniors $20
In Slawomir Mrozek’s “The Emigrants,” truth comes from
simple things. The title characters in this bitterly ironic play
are two impoverished exiles from an unnamed European
country. The simple-minded laborer is obsessed with the
dream of returning to his native country a rich man, while
his roommate, the coolly intellectual political refugee, keeps
dashing such illusions. This dark comedy reminds us of what
makes home a home, whether or not we are there.

textures and sonic spaces. Founded by Nicaraguan
pianist/composer Darwin Noguera and Mexican

voice in the Latin jazz genre to be reckoned with. Its

in order to dismiss extermination rumors. The production,

Saturday, May 18, 8 p.m., Pfeiffer Hall, Price Levels* $50, $40, $35
Longtime fans of America’s favorite little big band will immediately recognize the 2009 album, “How Big Can You Get?
A Tribute to Cab Calloway,” as a milestone in Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s multi-platinum, 19-year career. While capturing
the essence of an American icon in a rowdy celebration of musicianship, mischief, genius, street smarts and fun, it’s also
possibly the timeliest and most welcome album of the year—bringing a much-needed high-voltage jolt of winning, feel-good
energy to a country slogging through tough times. Since its arrival on the music scene in 1993, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s
irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach have proven to be the singular standout among
the numerous bands that launched the swing revival
throughout the ‘90s.

Michelle Lindblom
“The Journey Continues”
August 17-September 30, 2012
“The imagery in my work serves as a metaphor for
the various confrontations, dialogues, muses and
revelations I have had on my journey so far. The
viewers are drawn in by the color, movement and
texture, but ultimately, I would hope they venture in
further using their own sensual interpretations.”
Lee Benson
“Immortality 10,000 Years”
October 5-November 11, 2012
Time and immortality. What is time? Why do we
often revel in the fact that it gives us existence, but
then we also rail against the fact that we are locked
in it? Why does it seem to be so fleetingly existing
while at the same time physically present always? Is
there “I” after I cease to exist in my current state?
C.K. Wilde
November 16, 2012-January 6, 2013
C.K. Wilde has formulated a wholly new and creative
approach to collage, keeping his work firmly planted in
collage’s roots as a disruptive medium bent on social
scrutiny, while unlocking its superb narrative potential.
Wilde is a co-founder of the nonprofit Brooklyn
Artists Alliance and has exhibited his work nationally
and internationally. His collages and book objects are
in numerous private and public collections, including
the Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art,
Museum of Modern Art and Walker Art Center.
Jan-Ru Wan
“ReMaterialization/Relive Memory”
January 11-March 24, 2013
The appearance and disappearance of dream,
desire, hope, despair, memory and life are transient:
one moment you realize they are all there, and the
next you may just go on with your everyday life
without even noticing them.
In this exhibit, Jan-Ru Wan uses found materials
such as petri dishes, red chili peppers, old clothes,
etc., to create artwork and question the emotional
construct of the human condition.

Pamela Hart
“Through New Eyes”
March 29-May 26, 2013
“There have been several times in my career where
I had moments—epiphanies, if you will—that
changed the way I saw my paintings. These epiphanies
have changed the way I painted. This exhibit is my
first showing of work following one such moment.”
When Pamela Hart saw her paintings for the first time
after returning from an exhibit, she looked at them
as old friends. But as she looked at them over time,
she felt they looked tired and maybe a little lost and
decided they needed more layers of space, depth
and an infusion of color. “This show is all about my
new vision.”
George Lorio
“Border Images”
May 31-July 28, 2013
George Lorio has a frame of vision inspired by his
New Orleans background. It was and continues to
be a place of extremes: beauty and decay, religion
and ritual, custom and iconoclasm.
“From that experience, I acquired an excitement
for visual matters, colors, forms and even artifacts.
Before moving to the Rio Grande Valley, my sculpture
employed a constructed metaphor to nature with
which I sought a transcendent reference to my
experience. Having lived on the border with Mexico
for 10 years, my imagery has grown more topical.
Presently, I use an image of irony with constructed and
found forms as a means to convey my comments on the
privilege of class, immigration and social hierarchy.”

January 13-March 7, 2013
Beginning with paper—from found papers in

plants in her backyard—Laura Lein-Svencner
sands, alters, abuses and manipulates. Textures
are formed by adding gesso, molding pastes and
acrylics, with a hint of the hand-pulled stitching
with thread and beads. Visual entities grow out
of self-discovery, and new compositions stem
from the need to take risks and explore. She is
passionately fascinated by the many ideas that
flow through each piece, stimulating the need
to gather and research the many aspects of
collage yet still not exposed.

“The concerns in my work range from the
formal to the fanciful with certain other issues
between these two extremes. In the process of
juggling this variety of ideas, my way of thinking
about the images and pictorial devices that are
employed has come to be largely about the
psychology of what is depicted and the subsequent
gaps that this leaves for the viewer to fill.
Ultimately, the paintings are intended to leave
the audience amused or bemused (sometimes
both) and to provide those experiences through
what seem to be familiar genres, but are less so
than what initial impressions might indicate.”

Events make great group outings for book clubs,
church groups, birthdays, corporate outings, holiday
events, social networking groups or even just a group
of friends getting together for a night at the theatre.
Learn a dance combination, get acting tips or hear
behind-the-scenes secrets during a workshop presented
by stars of the show. Some performers will organize
hands-on workshops before their show. Call the box
office for special group discounts and reservations.
Hors d’oeuvres or Desserts
The lobbies of Wentz Concert Hall and Madden
Theatre provide an elegant, spacious atmosphere
to gather for drinks and hors d’oeuvres or dessert
before a show. Let us create a reception to fit
your budget that’s as simple as a small buffet with
desserts and coffee or as elaborate as hand-passed
hors d’oeuvres, champagne and silk tablecloths.
