Special thanks to Mrs. Hemmingson for coordinating the project. Sacred Heart Academy opened its doors in 1889, when the original Sacred Heart Church was converted into a two-story school. Five Dominican sisters were welcomed from the Motherhouse in New York and 150 students enrolled the first year. Today, after many additions, renovations and improvements; considerable growth in enrollment; and the noted privilege of being the only K through 12 Catholic school remaining in the Saginaw Diocese (and one of a select few in the State of Michigan); SHA proudly celebrates a quasquicentennial—one and a quarter centuries of Catholic tradition. SHA currently has more than 435 students, and over 3,700 graduates who carry a legacy of faith, leadership and service in their lives.
