Brock aims to ensure that all students really make the most of their time here; our extracurricular activities will encourage you to develop your creative, practical and personal skills alongside your academic studies.
A levels are traditional qualifications, highly valued by universities and employers. Courses last two years and are mostly assessed by written exams with results graded from
A* to E. Coursework and practical skills are also assessed in some subjects.
The progress I made in my subjects during my time at Brockenhurst was incredible; my teachers ensured I gained the three A grades I needed for Cambridge.
Toby Henley-Smith, now studying Natural
Sciences at the University of Cambridge.
A level courses are a natural choice for you if you have enjoyed studying and have been successful in your GCSE courses. A levels offer you the chance to focus your attention on a smaller number of subjects, building your knowledge and understanding in the areas in which you have proven strengths and strong interest.
Brock offers 47 different A level courses and you will choose three or four subjects from this wide range. One advantage of joining a larger college is that any combination of courses is usually possible and our staff will be happy to discuss your choices with you – you will be able to talk to them at one of our Open Events or when you apply.
Vocational courses are directly related to an area of employment or a future occupation that you might be interested in pursuing. As well as learning the theory related to the subject area, you will have the opportunity to apply that theory in a more practical context and will undertake work experience or placements as part of your course. Assessment is largely by coursework at the end of each module, rather than the A level examination system. Vocational courses are available at various levels depending upon your GCSE results and plans for future study or employment.
Level 3 Diplomas are recognised qualifications for university entrance and are equivalent to two A levels. They are fulltime, two year courses that provide the opportunity to spend your time in College studying a subject directly relevant to your career plans; you may also study an A level subject alongside your Diploma. The Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A levels.
Level 2 Diplomas allow you to focus on the career area of your choice and develop the knowledge and skills that employers will be looking for. Courses usually last for one year, and you will undertake work experience to equip you with the skills needed to progress onto a Level 3 course, or enter directly into an Apprenticeship or employment.
For more information visit www.brock.ac.uk
Apprenticeships are high quality work-based training programmes, ideal for young people who want to develop their career prospects. Apprenticeships allow you to focus on a career area of your choice, train on the job and be paid as an employee whilst also studying for a nationally recognised vocational qualification – so you can earn while you learn.
See page 54 for more details.
Brock’s range of courses has been designed to ensure that we offer a diverse choice of subject areas across A level and Vocational courses – our subject areas are reviewed each year to ensure we offer the widest and most relevant subjects to all students.
Whether you’re planning to go to university or straight into the workplace, our flexible curriculum allows you to select a combination of courses to suit your Higher Education and career plans, enabling you to enjoy a mixture of subjects that make the most of your talents and to reach your goals.

Brockenhurst is recognised as one of the most successful colleges in the UK. In addition to an outstanding Ofsted rating, the College holds the prestigious Beacon College status for excellence and innovation in education.
Our annual A level results are proof of our excellence, with a consistent 99% pass rate year on year. In 2015 half of students gained A*-B grades, with three quarters of all students achieving A*-C grades across all subjects.
Vocational students also achieved excellent results.
Detailed exam results for 2015 can be found on our website www.brock.ac.uk/achievements
I was so lucky to enjoy such a nice learning environment at Brock – my teachers provided so much support for which I am very grateful.

They aim not just to teach but to bring out a real understanding of specific areas and a motivation to succeed.
Every student at Brock is assigned a personal progress manager, whose role is to support and enable progression, whether this is to university, employment or apprenticeship.
This is backed by our unique ‘Next Steps’ programme which allows our students to access a superb range of activities including study skills, UCAS support, specialist advice for progression to certain courses, university visits, careers support, external speaker events, even volunteering and gap year plans.

Whether your interests lie in finance, human resources, management, marketing, sales or entrepreneurship, an
A level in one or more of these subjects will teach skills crucial to progression to Higher Education or employment.
We offer A level courses in the following subjects:
Financial management and planning are the backbone of all successful businesses and a good understanding of accounting will be a key asset to anyone aspiring to a career in any area of business. This course will develop your skills in financial, cost and management accounting and you will learn how these processes link into the wider business world.
