The Hepatitis B Foundation has enjoyed one of its most
productive years despite the economic downturn. We are
pleased to report that our work has been a bright spot in
one of the toughest years.
This year we have focused our efforts on making the
greatest impact on some of the greatest unmet needs.
This includes establishing consensus recommendations
for hepatitis B screening and treatment of children who
live with this disease and for primary care providers who
lack clear guidelines.
Research results take longer, but we have impressive
and tangible results to share, too. This year, the liver
cancer biomarker that we helped to discover has been
optioned to a major diagnostics company. If all goes well,
this blood test will be available for human use within the
next couple of years.

president Dr. Timothy Block (far left). (June 2010)
HBF coordinates this prestigious international scientific
meeting each year that attracts hundreds of researchers from
around the world to
discuss the science
of hepatitis B and
D viruses. This
year the meeting
was held in the
beautiful Loire
Valley in France.

TRAINING YOUNG SCIENTISTS
“Working as a young scientist
is a unique experience. Many
doors of opportunity have
opened for me and to others
like me in the [HBF labs]. We are
encouraged to be unafraid in
our insights, and to realize that
every new discovery comes
from both standing on the
shoulders of giants and from
pioneering new ideas.”
Anne Lamontagne, former Research
Apprentice now in graduate school.
Summer College Research
Internships provide a wonderful (and
paid) opportunity for students to work
on an independent research project with
senior scientists for a 10-week period.
Funding is provided by grants from
the PA Department of Health, Merck’s
West Point Charitable Contributions
Committee, and the Charles Sigety
Family Foundation.
The High School Enrichment
Program offers a two-week “hands-on”
experience in a professional lab for
students entering their senior year.
Interactive seminars led by leaders in the
field introduce them to careers in science,
medicine, patent law, public health and
more. This program is supported in part
by Pennsylvania EITC funds received from
Universal Health Services of Delaware
and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
The Apprenticeship Program is
designed for the recent college graduate who
wants to gain real-life research experience
before making a decision to pursue graduate
or medical education. They receive valuable
mentorship and encouragement to become
deeply involved in their research projects
and to participate in the intellectual world
of scientists through research rounds,
journal clubs, and special seminars.

HBF established this year the PA Center
for Drug Discovery (PCDD) as an innovative
program of its research institute, the Institute
for Hepatitis and Virus Research, to accelerate
the translation of biomedical discoveries into
therapies for clinical evaluation in humans.
Our PCDD program encompasses activities
to improve efficiencies in early drug discovery
research and to help integrate senior scientists
back into the workforce who have been laid-off
from companies that have downsized during
the tough economy (we call this our “Up and
Out” program which has been well-received).
B Informed Now!
Breaks the Barriers
HBF revamped its annual patient conference
into a mobile event that touched down on
both U.S. coasts in Philadelphia and Los
Angeles, with Seattle, WA slated to round
out the 2010 itinerary. The B Informed Now!
Patient Workshops on hepatitis B and liver
cancer attracted almost 200 people at each
site and offered free HBV screenings as well.
Featured keynote speakers included Drs.
Emmett Keeffe (Stanford U), Hie-Won
Hann (Thomas Jefferson U), and Kenneth
Rothstein (Drexel U). Sessions were offered
in English with headsets provided for live
translations into Chinese and Korean. Podcasts
of the workshops are now available in all three
languages on our website @ www.hepb.org.

Hepatitis B
The Philadelphia Story
On June 15, 2010, HBF launched
Hep B Free Philadelphia, a public health
campaign based on the successful model
in San Francisco. Hep B Free aims to
increase screening
and vaccination rates
through a citywide
mobilization effort.
HBF’s campaign also
returns hepatitis B to
the forefront in Philadelphia, which has
been at the center of the hepatitis B story
from the very beginning.
The hepatitis B virus was discovered by
HBF’s Distinguished Scholar Dr. Baruch
Blumberg (for which he won the Nobel
Prize) at Fox Chase Cancer Center in
Philadelphia, and he invented the hepatitis
B vaccine that is now manufactured by
two companies located in the region. The
first animal discovered to be most useful
in studying hepatitis B was an infected
groundhog living at the Philadelphia Zoo.
And the only national nonprofit dedicated
to this disease, the Hepatitis B Foundation,
was established in Philadelphia as well.
Making the Rounds
HBF continues to make an impact on
clinical practice through its specialty
workshops. The pediatric HBV
workshops we convened to focus on
children has resulted in the first national
recommendations for their care and
treatment; and this year’s workshop with
leading primary care providers (PCPs)
established recommendations for hepatitis
B in busy primary care settings. All of the
HBF clinical workshops were facilitated
by HBF medical advisors Drs. Brian
McMahon and Thomas London.

5 Million Americans
Silent No More!
HBF helped to organize the first World
Hepatitis Day Rally on May 19th in Washington,
DC with the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable
which sponsored the event. More than 50 HBF
researchers, outreach staff and board members
traveled to the Capitol to advocate for increased
federal attention and funding for chronic hepatitis.
With more than 5 million Americans living with
hepatitis B and C, we cannot be silent anymore.
Congressman Mike Honda sounds the
alarm at the World Hepatitis Day rally.
PA Congressman Patrick Murphy stands with the HBF
at the historic World Hepatitis Day rally in Washington, DC.
Landmark IOM Report on
Hepatitis and Liver Cancer
HBF Joins Historic New
Asia Pacific Coalition
HBF is proud to have been a key
participant in the Institute of Medicine
(IOM) study that looked at the U.S.
response to chronic viral hepatitis. The
landmark IOM report on Hepatitis and
Liver Cancer concluded that, “The current
approach to the prevention and control of
chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C is not
working” and that “inadequate resources
are being allocated” to address the needs
of 5 million affected Americans. The IOM
committee met over an 18-month period and included two HBF
scientific advisers — Drs. Harvey Alter and Brian McMahon —
and HBF director of Public Health Research Dr. Alison Evans.
HBF co-founders Timothy and Joan Block
(standing, center) were invited to present U.S. advocacy
successes at a workshop in Beijing to discuss better
policy coordination for hepatitis B in the Asia Pacific.
The workshop included leading clinicians in the region
and other international groups. Discussions revolved
around the need to identify public policy issues that
impede optimized screening and linkage to care, and
to develop practical strategies to reduce the burden
of hepatitis B. At the conclusion of the workshop the
decision was made to establish a new independent,
multi-disciplinary group — Coalition for Eradication of
Viral Hepatitis in Asia Pacific (CEVHAP) — and HBF is
proud to be a charter member.

RESEARCH, Education and Advocacy IS THE KEY
Hepatitis B is an enormous global health problem.
• 2 billion people worldwide have been infected by hepatitis B. (1 out of every 3)
• 1 million people in the world die from hepatitis B each year.
Hepatitis B causes 80% of primary liver cancer worldwide.
• Liver cancer is the 3rd leading cause of death in the world.
• In the U.S., liver cancer rates are increasing as most other types of cancer are decreasing.
• The hepatitis B vaccine is the 1st anti-cancer vaccine — by preventing a hepatitis B infection.
There is no known cure for more than 400 million people worldwide
living with hepatitis B.
• Hepatitis B is preventable and treatable — now let’s make it curable!
