Ardi – Dampier Peninsula
Stretching approximately 200 kilometres north
of Broome along the partly unsealed Cape
Leveque Road, the Dampier Peninsula is the
perfect getaway for the adventurous traveller.
Known to the local Aboriginal people as
Ardi, meaning northeast, it offers unspoiled
coastline and unique Indigenous cultural
experiences. Visitors are offered the
opportunity to learn traditional fishing and
hunting techniques, taste bush foods and
learn bush medicine. The focus on sharing
culture involves experiencing traditional
life in family and community settings.
You can swim in the sparkling waters, go
snorkelling, fishing or simply relax and enjoy
the wide open stretches of white sandy
beaches. The area is also rich in history - don’t
forget to stop off in Beagle Bay and see the
Sacred Heart Church and its spectacular pearl
shell altar built by local Aboriginal people and
the Pallotine Monks in 1917.
Visiting the Dampier Peninsula means entering
Aboriginal land, as it is made up of a series of
small Aboriginal communities - offering
accommodation ranging from simple bush
camps to luxury self contained safari tents.
Bookings are essential at all
accommodation sites.
As you travel through this pristine area, you
are asked to respect the land, the culture
and the privacy of local people where
access is restricted. Whilst some fuel and
stores can be purchased, they are limited
and only available at certain locations and
times. It is advised to carry extra fuel, oil,
water, emergency rations, spare parts and
tools. Heed warning signs when swimming.
The peninsula is also home to Australia’s
oldest operating pearl farm.
Please note four-wheel drive is recommended,
medical facilities are strictly limited, dogs are
not allowed and alcohol cannot be purchased
anywhere on the Peninsula.

Derby Wharf
Derby & the Buccaneer Archipelago
Situated on King Sound, 220 kilometres north
east of Broome, Derby was the first town settled
in the Kimberley. With the highest tidal variation
in Australia reaching up to 11 metres, a visit to
Derby is not complete without seeing high and
low tide at the Derby Wharf.
The outlying mangroves attract over 210 bird
species including migratory waders and are a
great place to explore the surrounding wetlands
and bush land. Derby has a vibrant cultural
heritage waiting to be explored. Visitors can be
led on an historical journey by visiting the
Wharfinger House Museum and Woolshed.
Derby is the closest point to the magnificent
islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago,
accessible by light aircraft or boat cruise. The
Archipelago is made up of a thousand rugged
islands with patches of rainforest, secluded
beaches and a fringe of mangroves set in a
turquoise tropical sea. Huge tides in this area
create a phenomenon known as the Horizontal
Waterfalls - where the massive tidal water
movement rushes through two small gaps in
high cliffs to form a horizontal waterfall.
Derby is the western gateway to your outback
adventure along the Gibb River Road - just a few
hours drive sees you in amazing gorge country.
Check out Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek or Bell
Gorge or head south on the highway to the
Willare Floodplains and try your luck fishing for
barramundi along the banks of the mighty
Fitzroy River. Derby accommodation options
include caravan parks, bed and breakfast and
hotel/ motels.
The Boab has become
an icon in Derby. Larger
specimen s have been
preserve d and a local festival
has been named after
this unusual looking tree.

Highway, Major Road
Gibb River & Kalumburu Roads
Gibb River Road
A journey along the Gibb River Road is one of the
last true Aussie outback adventures. It was originally
constructed in the 1960s to transport cattle from
outlying stations to the ports of Derby and
Wyndham. Today, it travels some 660kms through
the central Kimberley Plateau from King Sound in
Derby to the Cambridge Gulf at Wyndham.
The journey takes in spectacular scenery with many
gorges, waterfalls and rivers along its length;
including Bell Gorge, Windjana Gorge, Tunnel
Creek and the Pentecost River El Questro area.
Allow yourself time to explore at your own pace,
and take the opportunity for hiking and
swimming in pools beneath plunging waterfalls.
If you plan to drive yourself, the road conditions
vary from bitumen to natural rocky earth, suitable
for high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles only
and is not recommended for towing of caravans,
trailers or boats. Camping is available in designated
camping areas only. Or you may choose to join an
extended 4WD safari with one of many tour
companies, camping or relaxing at station stays and
wilderness retreats along the way.
Kalumburu Road
This unsealed road links the Kalumburu Aboriginal
Community and Mission to the outside world,
spanning some 267 kilometres of rough unsealed
road north from the Gibb River Road past Mitchell
Plateau to the northern coast of Kalumburu. This is a
spectacular but extremely remote part of the
Kimberley with very limited fuel, food, water,
medical and camping facilities available. If you
intend visiting Kalumburu Mission you will need a
permit, which can be obtained from the
Department of Indigenous Affairs or go to
www.dia.wa.gov.au. Once you arrive in Kalumburu,
another permit is required from the local
Community. Local tour activities can be arranged
with the Kalumburu Community with prior notice.
Access to Station Stays and attractions generally
commence mid April and close mid October.
Check with the local Visitor Centre.
Purchase a copy of the Gibb River & Kalumburu
Road Guide which details distances, attractions,
fuel and accommodation. Available from
www.derbytourism.com.au or one of the local
visitor centres.
Experiences
• Enjoy a four-wheel drive adventure of a lifetime
• Hike through spectacular gorge country
Please be aware facilities along the Gibb River
and Kalumburu Roads are limited.
• Spot unique flora and fauna of the Kimberley
Accommodation includes camping areas,
wilderness retreats and station stays. All are
extremely popular and prior booking is strongly
recommended. The best time to travel the Gibb
River Road is between May and September as
these roads are generally closed between
December and March, when the rains come.
• Fish for a magnificent
barramundi
• Swim in fresh water rock pools and gorges
• Camp under the stars
• Stay at outback retreats
and station stays
• View ancient rock art

Fitzroy Crossing
Set on the banks of the mighty Fitzroy River, Fitzroy
Crossing is the quintessential outback Australian
town. No visit is complete without a drive out to
the original town site and the legendary Crossing
Inn. Built in 1897 as a shanty inn and trade store for
long distance travellers waiting to ford the river, it is
the oldest established hotel in the Kimberley region.
Fitzroy Crossing is a great base to explore Tunnel
Creek and Windjana Gorge National Parks. Tunnel
Creek, located 115km from Fitzroy Crossing, is
Western Australia’s oldest cave system, part of the
350 million year old Devonian Reef system.
The 750 metre tunnel is home to bats and
stalactites and was used as a hideout late
last century by the Aboriginal Jandamarra,
PAGE 76 | www.australiasnorthwest.com
whose story is both moving and tragic of a man
caught between two cultures, and is gaining a
notoriety that rivals that of the Kelly Gang in Victoria.
Located 150 kilometres from Fitzroy Crossing, the
7km gorge walk of Windjana Gorge takes you along
the gorge and back, along the course of the
Lennard River.
Fitzroy Crossing is also the gateway to Geikie Gorge
where the floodwaters of the Fitzroy River have
carved the 30 metre deep gorge through the
limestone junction of the Oscar and Geikie Ranges.

Great Northern Highway
Caroline Pool, near Halls Creek
Halls Creek
Named after the prospector Charlie Hall who
found a gold nugget weighing almost 1 kilogram
on Christmas Day in 1885, Halls Creek sits on
the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert.
While the land has been occupied by
Aboriginal people for thousands of years, as
the site of western Australia’s first gold
discovery, more than 15,000 people were
drawn to what is now known as Old Halls
Creek to try their luck at prospecting. While
the town’s gold rush lasted a mere three
months, it became a trading centre for cattle
stations, aboriginal communities and miners.
An airfield was built in 1948 and the town was
relocated over the next decade nearer this
site. Halls Creek became the last stop before
stock drovers commenced the long cattle
drive along the Canning Stock Route. The old
town was completely abandoned in 1954 and
Halls Creek is now a busy service town for
surrounding pastoralists, Aboriginal
communities and travellers.
Halls Creek is a gateway to natural attractions
including the striking formation of the white
quartz China Wall, the orange and black
striped domes of the Purnululu National Park
Bungle Bungle Range, and the dramatic
impression of the Wolfe Creek Crater formed
300,000 years ago when a meteorite crashed
to earth.
Accommodation options include a hotel,
lodge and caravan park.
Although it has long been
known to Aborigina l people,

the Wolfe Creek meteorite
crater was only discovere d
by European s in 1947,

Staircase to the Moon 2013
From March to October witness a breathtaking natural phenomenon known as Staircase to
the Moon. It is caused by the rising of the full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats at
extremely low tide - creating a beautiful optical illusion of stairs reaching to the moon.
It occurs along the coastline at Onslow, Dampier,
Point Samson Peninsula, Hearson Cove, Cossack,
Port Hedland and Broome.
The Staircase to the Moon in Broome is often
complemented by the local markets at Town Beach.
Here you can sample local fare, purchase crafts
and delight in talented local entertainers.
The times vary slightly for each location, so make
sure to check with the local Visitor Centre for up to
the minute information.
