GE-approved Writing II courses may fulfill an appropriate foundational area. One of the 10 courses must be either a GE-approved lower division seminar or a second GE-approved Writing II course in the appropriate foundational area. Courses that are cross-listed in more than one foundational area may be used to satisfy a requirement in only one foundation. Foundations of the Arts and Humanities Three 5-unit courses, one from each subgroup: • • • Literary and Cultural Analysis Philosophical and Linguistic Analysis Visual and Performance Arts Analysis and Practice Foundations of Society and Culture Three 5-unit courses, one from each subgroup and one from either subgroup: • • Historical Analysis Social Analysis Foundations of Scientific Inquiry* Four courses, two from each subgroup. One 5-unit course from each subgroup must include a laboratory or demonstration or be a Writing II course: • • Life Sciences Physical Sciences *In each subgroup one of the two courses must be five (5) units and carry either laboratory, demonstration, or Writing II credit. Each of the other two courses may be four (4) units. Course Credit Restrictionss • • If you have already earned college credit for a class taken at UCLA, you cannot repeat the class for credit at a community college. The reverse is also true: you will not receive credit for a class you take at UCLA if you have already received credit for the class from another institution. You will not receive credit for courses taken at a community college in violation of sequence restrictions. This rule applies whether the restrictions are imposed by UCLA or by the community college. Unit Restrictionss • • After you have completed 105 quarter units toward your degree, you are no longer eligible to receive unit credit for courses completed at a community college. One semester unit translates into 1.5 quarter units. Concurrent Enrollmentt • • You are concurrently enrolled if your take courses for credit at another institution while enrolled in UCLA during regular session (fall, winter and spring terms). No credit will be given for courses taken concurrently without the permission of the college; permission is granted only under extraordinary circumstances. 2
