Department of Psychology 5500 University Parkway San Bernardino, CA 92407-2397 Main Line: (909) 537-5570 Fax: (909) 537-7003 Dear prospective MS I/O student: We appreciate your interest in our Master’s program in industrial-organizational (I/O) psychology at CSUSB. Enclosed you will find application materials for applying for admission to the university and to the department. Please read these materials carefully. I would like to take this opportunity to address questions we are often asked about the I/O program and to clarify the university materials. ■ The deadline for Fall 2012 entry is March 1, 2012 ■ If you were not an undergraduate Psychology major, please be sure you have completed these three core psychological courses (or their equivalents): Introductory Psychology Introductory Statistics Experimental Psychology In addition we recommend that you have completed a class in either organizational behavior or industrial psychology. These courses are not mandatory prerequisites to the program, but candidates with these courses are more likely to gain entrance to the program. ■ Please allow enough time for your college transcripts to be sent to the University. The University admissions office must evaluate official transcripts of all undergraduate work you have done before it is sent to the Department. This process could take two months. Please read the sheet entitled “Application Procedure” carefully. Be sure to send materials as requested to both the University Graduate Admissions Office and the Psychology Department. ■ We accept 12-15 students each year. Acceptance is based on multiple criteria. We evaluate your GPA, your statement of purpose, and letters of reference. In reviewing your GPA, we weight most heavily your last two years of coursework and your grades in psychology classes. The average cumulative GPA across applicants varies from year to year, but it is typically about 3.4 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate coursework. This average GPA does not mean you should not apply if your GPA is less than 3.4—we look carefully at all materials submitted. ■ GRE scores are not required, but you may wish to submit them. Good GRE scores can help to offset a low GPA. ■ The MS I/O program requires the successful completion of a thesis research project. There are no plans to develop a comprehensive exam option. ■ Graduate assistantships are often available through the Psychology Department. There are also teaching opportunities available to second-year students. Other forms of financial aid are available and information may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office (909-537-5220).
