FAU speech centerpiece of Obama South Florida swing Tuesday By GEORGE BENNETT Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Updated: 9:45 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2012 Posted: 5:15 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2012 President Obama will speak Tuesday at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton during a day of South Florida campaign fundraising stops. He is expected to talk about the economy, a White House official said. Other details were not immediately available. Obama will be the second sitting president to visit FAU. Lyndon Johnson spoke at the school's dedication in 1964. Jimmy Carter also spoke at the school in the 1980s after leaving office. Obama is also scheduled to attend a $10,000-a-person fundraising lunch Tuesday at the Palm Beach Gardens home of Paula and Hansel Tookes. VIP tickets for the event require a $50,000 contribution. Later Tuesday, Obama will attend a fundraiser at the Westin Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, with admission requiring contributions from $500 to $5,000. The president also will headline a dinner at the home of attorney Jeremy Alters in Miami-Dade County with tickets ranging from $15,000 to $30,000. With Florida a key battleground in 2012, Obama and top surrogates are making frequent visits. The president attended fundraisers and spoke at the University of Miami in February. He also visited Walt Disney World in January to unveil tourism initiatives. First lady Michelle Obama made a Florida swing in January that included a fundraiser at the Palm Beach home of Howard and Michele Kessler. Vice President Joe Biden spoke to seniors in Coconut Creek last month.
