A CR/NC option is NOT available! Your grade will be calculated using the following weighted system: A+: 100-98% B+: 89-88% C+: 79-78% D+: 69-68% F: 0-59 A: 97-94% B: 87-84% C: 77-74% D: 67-64% A-: 93-90% B-: 83-80% C-: 73-70% D-: 63-60% If you wish to challenge a grade or discuss a grade, you must wait 48 hours until after the grade and you must provide a typed 1-2pg letter explaining: o (1) Why you feel the grade was incorrect, o (2) What revision/opportunity you would like to be granted and how that fits with the syllabus policies o (3) When in the space of the quarter, you would complete the revision/opportunity. JOURNAL & Folder Materials: You will be asked to keep a journal throughout this quarter for reflecting on readings, films, class discussions, and your individual creative and critical process. This journal will be a place for you to express your ideas in a more casual way than in your papers. • For all reading assignments, you will be expected to not only read the assignment, but to complete the journal assignment corresponding to each reading: typically this is a Triple Entry Journal or a ½ response please check the syllabus. • Additionally, remember to bring your journal to class every day because we will often start class by sharing journal entries. Also, in-class free writes and grammar exercises will be done in the journal. • The Journal material is collected with each essay or project and will receive a score separate from the essay grade. Final Portfolio Assignment: During this course, you will create a portfolio of your work, including a written reflection of 1000 words, that is worth ten percent of your grade. Think of it as a scientific study of your progress as a writer over the next four months. What you include in your portfolio doesn’t have to be perfect. " Remember, writing is a process. Collecting your work and then reflecting on that work is part of the process. The portfolio project is designed to get you thinking about your specific challenges, your strategies for improvement, your successes and failures, and your goals for the future. Every writer, no matter how accomplished, has room for improvement. " This portfolio is your culminating experience and should include: (1) a reflective essay, (2) A research/textual based analytical argument essay with a Works Cited, and (3) an in-‐class essay piece. This course does not have a final exam. Leonard 2 EWRT 1A Sect. 03 & 04 Summer 2015 COURSE REQUIREMENTS Any essay having more than 5 of the following errors per page will not receive a passing grade. Examples of major errors: Fragments Run-on Sentences Misuse of possessives Subject-verb agreement Verb tense errors Pronoun agreement Comma splice Confusing/Unclear Sentences Pronoun reference Preposition errors Verb form Sentence Focus Use of Contractions Please start working on any weaknesses as soon as you get your First Essay back. STUDENT ATTENDANCE POLICY Students are expected to attend all sessions of each class. Instructors may drop students from the class if they fail to attend the first class meeting, or when accumulated unexcused hours of absences exceed ten percent of the total number of hours the class meets during the Quarter. Moreover, an instructor may drop from the class any student who fails to attend at least one class session during the first three weeks of instruction. Attendance is required every day because all class time counts. Writing, reading, and critical thinking are skills that are improved through constant practice. Students who attend class regularly are more likely to succeed, so come on time, stay for the whole class, and be active in class. " If you are absent, you are responsible finding out any announcements or assignment changes made in class (contact one of your lifelines for the info—not me). " Late essays will be penalized one full letter grade for each day it is late, and quizzes may not be made up. " No late homework will be accepted. " Essays, homework, or journal entries will NOT be accepted via e-mail. " If you exceed more than one week’s worth of absences, I will talk with you about dropping the course. " If something tragic occurs, please let me know how I can help you make it through the course. I am willing to work with you if you are dedicated. " If you claim death or illness prevents you from turning in an essay, you will have to present a death certificate or doctor’s note. " If you stop coming to class, you are responsible for dropping yourself or you will receive an F. POLITENESS & Class Policies: Politeness is more than a request -- it is a requirement for this class. If you plan to succeed in this class 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. • Out of courtesy for your classmates, please mute the sound on your cell phone or social networks during class. Please do not take calls in class or text message or snapchat or face-time in-class! -Anyone caught doing this will be asked to leave the class for the day and receive an unexcused absence. Your cell phone must be in your bag during all of class unless the instructor asked you to use it. Remember to be courteous to everyone in the class, even when you disagree. Please do not carry on conversations while I am talking, during a presentation, or when a classmate is talking. This is rude and I will ask you to leave if the behavior continues. Please be respectful when entering class late or after a break. Wait for a pause in the presentation or the activity to re-take your seat. WARNING: Disruptive students will be asked to leave the class and lose their participation points for that day! REVISION POLICY: o Attached to the syllabus is a coupon that entitles you to revise one paper. o If you choose to revise a paper, you must present the revision coupon during week 10 and complete all the revision assignment steps by week 5 and the essay is due the last day of class NOT the final. o You may only revise one paper. o You must complete all steps for revision in the course reader. Essays not following the guidelines will not be read. o Revision coupons can only be used for one item e.g. only an essay or only a folder. They do not apply to group projects. o You must complete the revision within by week 5 and the revision goes into the portfolio. o All your revision changes must be highlighted unless you changed the entire paper. o Your revision score will replace the original score to equal your final grade on the assignment. Leonard 3 EWRT 1A Sect. 03 & 04 Summer 2015 EXTENTION POLICY o Attached to this syllabus is a coupon that entitles you to an extension on one paper or homework assignment. o Please present this coupon on the day the assignment is due and you will receive an extension. o This CANNOT be used with group projects or the final portfolio or a revision o You must be present on the day the paper or assignment is due to use the coupon. Extensions are not accepted via e-mail, phone, or other students. LATE WORK: o Assignments are due in-class (NOT my email box) on the due date. o Homework is due at the beginning of class, so if you come to class late, your homework is late. o Late homework assignments are worth 0 points unless you contacted the instructor prior to the class. o If you claim a death or illness prevents you from turning in an assignment, you must produce a death certificate or doctor’s note to receive an extension. o Due dates are final and will not be altered to fit your personal needs. o If you are absent on the day we have an essay examination, you must schedule a make-up with me by the next day, or you will receive an F on the assignment. PEER REVIEW o Peer Review is a chance for you to get some valuable feedback from your peers on your rough draft before turning it in. Your rough draft may be either handwritten or typed, but it must be “good faith” draft, meaning it is 2-3 pages in length and shows careful thought and planning even though it may be unfinished. o o Peer review days are “triple point” days, meaning that they are worth 15 participation points. You must be present and participating in class to receive these points. If you are absent or unprepared, you will receive 0 or partial credit. I do not accept rough drafts over email, in my mailbox, or in my office. You cannot turn in rough drafts late. The only exceptions to the rule are listed under the “Attendance Policy” section. CORRESSPONDENCE For General Questions about the Class: This class has a Catalyst page: catalyst.deanza.edu. Messages sent Friday, Saturday, or Sunday will be retrieved on the following Monday. " PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY! " In your messages, please include your first and last name and the name of the class in which you are enrolled. VISUAL FORMAT FOR ALL ESSAYS AND HOMEWORK: All the information below should be in your heading at the top left corner of every essay, exercise, or homework assignment you submit to me. An incomplete heading may lower your grade on that assignment. NAME INSTRUCTOR’S NAME ENGL 1A DE ANZA COLLEGE DATE ASSIGNMENT NAME L. Name 1 For essays only: You should center an original title (meaning the creation of your own brain and not just the assignment title) below your heading. Your original title should preview your essay and be thought provoking or interesting. All essays and homework must be typed, with margins of one inch all around, double-spaced, times new roman and size 12 font. DO NOT include a cover sheet! PLAGIARISM: ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Leonard 4 EWRT 1A Sect. 03 & 04 Summer 2015 From the De Anza Student Handbook (http://www.deanza.edu/studenthandbook/academic-integrity.html): The two most common kinds of academic dishonesty are cheating and plagiarism. Cheating is the act of obtaining or attempting to obtain credit for academic work through the use of dishonest, deceptive or fraudulent means. • Copying, in part or in whole, from someone else’s test • Submitting work presented previously in another course, if contrary to the rules of either course • Altering or interfering with grading • Using or consulting, during an examination, any sources, consulting with others, use of electronic equipment including cell phones and PDA’s, or use of materials not authorized by the instructor • Committing other acts that defraud or misrepresent. Plagiarism is representing the work of someone else as your own. • Incorporating the ideas, words, sentences, paragraphs, or parts of another person’s writings, without giving appropriate credit, and representing the product as one’s own • Representing another’s artistic or scholarly works such as musical compositions, computer programs, photographs, paintings, drawings or sculptures as your own • Submitting a paper purchased from a research or term paper service, including the internet • Undocumented Web source usage. Academic and/or administrative sanctions may be applied in cases of academic dishonesty. Academic consequences may include: 1. Receiving a failing grade on the test, paper or exam 2. Having course grade lowered 3. Receiving a grade of F in the course Administrative consequences may include 1. Being placed on disciplinary probation 2. Being placed on disciplinary suspension 3. Being expelled 4. Students may also be subject to arrest and or heavy fines if the academic dishonesty offense violates state or federal law. HARASSMENT & DISCRIMINATION POLICY The Student Handbook (AP 4640) defines the “Harassment & Discrimination Policy) as well as the consequences of violating this policy. # To report sexual harassment or to obtain assistance in determining whether or not you have been or are a victim of sexual harassment, Michele LeBleu-Burns, Dean of Student Development and EOPS, 408. 864.8828 DISABILITY SUPPORT PROGRAMS & SERVICES Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the instructor immediately to discuss specific needs. # Educational Diagnostic Center (EDC) is located in LCW 110 and may be contacted at: (408) 864-8839. # Disability Support Services (DSS) is located in SCS 41 and may be contacted at: (408) 864-8753 (voice) or (408) 864-8748 (tty). PARTICIPATION One of the things I love most about teaching is that it gives us the opportunity to talk about issues of the human condition. We look different from one another, come from different cultural and personal experiences, and have different talents, goals, and opinions. Boldly sharing these differences will make discussions and our class great fun, so I look forward to hearing all of your voices whenever you are comfortable. I am not the only teacher in the classroom; I am also learning from you. My goal for you is to actively engage in the texts we read and the subjects we write about, rather than asking you to passively regurgitate my ideas. Each day of class is worth 5 participation points. If you miss class, or you are disruptive, then you lose these points. Again, the only exceptions to the rule are listed under the “Attendance Policy” section. THE SYLLABUS and/or SCHEDULE DISCLAIMER • • • • Changes to the syllabus and/or schedule may occur, as an instructor deems necessary. Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to stay informed of these changes. I will note syllabus changes in an e-mail and in class You might also consider selecting a study partner or creating a study group whom you can contact if you have questions about changes to the syllabus/schedule. Leonard 5 EWRT 1A Sect. 03 & 04 Summer 2015 Note: If you have any special circumstances that you feel may influence your performance in this class (a diagnosed learning disability, physical disability, or anything at all that might interfere with your learning), please come chat with me so that we can create a learning environment that works for you. Something to Think About: Among other things, life is about choices. Please make your choices wisely because with the privilege of making them comes the consequences with which you will have to live. Not doing homework is a choice. Turning in a paper late is a choice. Not coming to class is a choice. Conversely, being successful in this class is also a choice. Before you do anything, ask yourself, “What outcome do I want, and what should I do to obtain it.” We look forward to working with and learning from all of you.
