RYE YMCA
2016 SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE
Session 3: January 25- April 10
Session 4: April 11 - June 24
Welcome to the RYE YMCA!
Dear Friends,
You may have passed them a hundred times: framed lists in our second floor hallway of Developmental
Assets® for children and teens. The term Developmental Assets might sound like something out of a
sociology textbook, but it is actually an important list of the community and family supports every child
needs to thrive.
As you know, the YMCA serves men, women and children of all ages and abilities. However, we know that
if we reach children when they are very young, helping them to grow in character, skills and confidence,
we help build stronger families and healthier communities. That’s why we’re constantly looking for ways
to engage kids and give them opportunities to be their best selves.
As we throw open the metaphorical
doors to a new year, our staff
is excited about the programs
they have planned for our young
members. The Second Saturday Teen
Nights for middle school students
and the Family First Fridays really
took off in 2015 and we look
forward to offering these again
in the coming months. The new
ExerZone studio has been a huge
hit, giving children and adults a
fun, high energy work-out. We’re
also offering alternatives to sports,
including chess, Lego Engineering,
origami, and cooking.
Kids having fun while exercising
in our new ExerZone
Finally, we’re proud to be a founding member of Rye-ACT (Rye Action for Children and Teens), a new
community coalition that is addressing the issue of underage drinking and substance abuse. (See page
45 for more about this initiative.)
Developmental Assets are more than a set of nice ideas. They’re the vital framework for a successful life.
And they’re the words we take to heart every day.
Sincerely,
Gregg Howells

Although mine is not a dramatic story, the Rye Y has dramatically
changed my life. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in, I love the
new friendships I’ve formed, the flexible hours, the convenience of
its location and especially the special women of the Tot Drop for
my children.
I’ve even just discovered the luxury of an uninterrupted shower
after my workouts! It’s such a loving and wonderful environment
that has completely changed my life. Now when people move here,
I tell them they must join the Y!”

PROGRAM REGISTRATION
REGISTRATION Glossary of terms
ROLLOVER WEEK - (In Person at Member Services Desk Only)
Rollover week is for Family and Youth Members currently in a class during the current session. Evaluation forms for swimming classes must accompany the registration form when registering for the next session. (If your child moves up, days
and times may have to change.) If your child remains in the same class day and time, your space will be held for you the
entire week of Rollover. However, if you have not re-registered during Rollover Week, you will have lost your placement in
the class for the next session. Any class offered free is NOT eligible for rollover. This applies to both Family Members and
Youth Members. Anyone wishing to re-register for these classes may do so by filling out a lottery form or going online.
Please note that Rollover week is not applicable when registering for summer and fall sessions.
MEMBER REGISTRATION - Mail in or Online
Registration is mail in/drop off or online for all classes. Members' best chance of securing a place in a class is to
use online registration (when available). Online registrations begin at 6 am on day of registration. Member online
registration requires a current membership at the Rye YMCA. Visit our website at www.ryeymca.org and click on the blue
tab that reads “Register Online.” Aquatics, ASA and other select programs are not eligible for online registration. See
details on Page 8. Forms and instructions can be found in the back of this brochure. Additional copies of the registration
form are available at the Member Services Desk.
Mail in/drop off registrations are processed through a lottery system beginning on the first day of registration at 9 am. Forms
may be dropped off or mailed beginning one month in advance of registration dates. An email will be sent to confirm your
successful registration. Visit our online registration portal to check the status of your class choice at www.ryeymca.org.
Non-Member REGISTRATION
Non-Member Registration is for Non-Member of the Y who wish to participate in a specific program or class. This
registration is done in person at the Member Services Desk beginning at 7:30 am, or you may use the online registration
beginning at 6 am (see page 8) on the specified Non-Member registration dates (page 6). Must register for youth aquatic
classes in person only.
FAMILY MEMBER FREE CLASSES
Of the free classes offered to Family Members, there is a limit of two free classes per family, per session (additional
fees will apply if more than two free classes are selected). Because of the popularity of these classes, free classes are
not eligible for rollover. At the end of each session, you will be required to re-register for the class through Member
Registration. In addition, if your child misses more than two classes in a row without notifying the Y, the child will be
dropped from the class.

LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a FREE twelve-week, small group program designed for
adult cancer survivors.
Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility
and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity
of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels
and self esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their
own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only
as part of their recovery, but as a way of life. In addition to the physical benefits, the
program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with
their fellow survivors, Y staff and members.
Y fitness instructors work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs.
The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive
cancer care. Classes are held weekdays with daytime and evening classes.

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS
AQUATIC GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES (INCLUDED IN MEMBERSHIP)
Ages 16 & up Co-ed - No registration necessary
Water exercise is safe, effective and fun for all ages and abilities, from the basic beginner to the professional athlete. Buoyancy creates
a reduced impact exercise alternative that is easy on the joints, while the water’s resistance challenges the muscles. Water lends itself
to a well-balanced workout that improves all major components of physical fitness: aerobic training, muscular strength and endurance,
flexibility and body composition. Please visit www.ryeymca.org or stop by the Member Services Desk for a schedule of classes.
AQUACIZE: A total body workout using shallow water segments with deep end activities to build cardiovascular endurance and enhance muscle
tone and flexibility.
AQUA-JOG: A deep water class using flotation belts. Easy on the joints. This class incorporates a warm-up, an aerobic workout, toning
and cool down. Participants use water resistance equipment to tone and build body strength.
WATER AEROBICS: A complete body workout that will test your endurance. Water resistance is used to develop your muscle tone,
flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and general well-being. Concentrating on both upper and lower body, exercises are taught at a quicker
pace to burn calories and increase endurance.
WATER STRETCH: A 30 minute class aimed to help relax and release tension throughout your body caused by daily living. Performed in
warmer water to assist the muscles during stretching.
HIGH IMPACT/ HIGH INTENSITY: This class features interval training, power and explosive jumps to challenge you without the
stresses on your body and joints thanks to the water's buoyancy. Various equipment may be used to challenge the workout further. This is
a Shallow water class.

All my life I have envied
people who can swim.
That little voice in my head would always
say “someday.” Now I am 68 years old and
profoundly deaf. I wondered how I would
achieve my goal without the ability to
communicate in the water. My mother didn’t
swim, and my father had a near-drowning
experience as a child so I didn’t have much
exposure to pools or the ocean. Raising two
children and work commitments took much of
my time over the years, and time passes.
I’ve had a cochlear implant for the last ten years that enables me to hear when I’m wearing it. Until last year,
the device could not be submerged in water. But Cochlear Americas came out with a waterproof encasement that
would allow me to pursue my dream.
So last year I was excited to get started. I called and visited regional venues to try to find an instructor who is
sensitive to my special needs. With less than two years until my 70th birthday, I felt that I am too old to NOT
know how to swim. Online, I read testimonials from people like me who had their own fears. Coming to the Rye
YMCA, everyone—starting with JoAnne at the front desk to Vickie Kortelis—alleviated my fears. Vickie was very
generous with her time and explained it was doable.
Jessica, my swim instructor, is acutely attuned to who I am and is sensitive to my fears. I started out with the
basics a child learns. In the beginning, I was just putting my face in the water and it was quite a feat. Now I feel
comfortable in the pool! She’ll say “Let’s do that again, just one more time,” and it seems more doable in little
pieces.
One day, coming across the length of the pool with my face in the water I could hear myself blowing
bubbles and I thought to myself, I am really doing this! I love observing the swimmers from the lobby
window. I take note of their form. Swimming looks like the most perfect exercise. Someday, it’ll be me doing laps
like that in the Brookside pool. That’s enough to keep me going!

In early November, I represented
the Sarasota Sharks in the Men’s
800 meter freestyle relay. We
broke the world record by almost
seven seconds for our age group.
I could not have done this
without the Rye YMCA. The staff is always friendly and
accommodating. Swimming here in the early morning
and later afternoon is perfect for me. I’ve really
gotten to know the people I swim with well. The
camaraderie lends itself to making new friends,
from the chit-chat before the doors open to
conversations in the locker room.
As a member of the Y you have a chance to give
back. I participate in the swim fundraisers like the
one supporting LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. I also
enjoy lending a hand to help out a swimmer; just a
few minutes ago I helped someone with their flip turn
technique. Why would you want to go anyplace else?

FOR COMMUNITY:
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
“Everybody’s doing it.”
How many times as parents have we heard that assertion from a teenager? It might be stated as fact,
or blurted in defiance, or uttered as a complaining whine. It might not even be voiced, but it’s there: the
perception by kids that other kids are drinking alcohol or getting high on a regular basis. However, student
surveys show that it’s just not true. Most kids are not engaging in risky behavior.
That’s the good news. And it’s one of
the reasons the Rye Y joined other local
leaders in forming Rye-ACT (Rye Action
for Children and Teens). Rye-ACT is a
broad-based, grassroots coalition that
is mobilizing our community to prevent
teen substance abuse and support healthy
choices. As a youth-serving organization,
we know that kids need positive
reinforcement from all of the adults and
institutions in their lives. Through RyeACT, we’re joining with schools, local
businesses, churches and synagogues,
law enforcement, elected officials, the Rye
Youth Council and parents to convey a
simple, yet powerful message to our teens:
We care.
We’re not naïve. We know that some kids take dangerous risks. We know that peer pressure, stress and
temptation are all too real for some kids. But we’re also hopeful. Hopeful that the strong embrace of our
entire community will allow our teens to stand up and say “Not everybody is doing it. And neither am I.”
FOR COMMUNITY: Y CARES
A member writes:
Thank you for giving me the chance to share what Y Cares means. Simply said, it has helped me to
keep my family on their track during a rough time. I had a place to exercise and connect with friends,
my youngest spent time in the childcare while I sat in the lounge and worked and my other children
stayed in the classes they love. The challenges and hard times were made so much easier with
the support of the Y. I hope to be able to have the resources to help others some day through my
contributions.
The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will
be turned away from Y programs and services because he or she can’t pay. In 2015 alone, the Y awarded over $498,000
in financial aid to 372 families and individuals in need. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, while
membership subsidies gave individuals and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times. Your support helps
us keep that promise every day.
