Llangollen Charity Ride
Ian Morton in Australia
Just a quick line to Invite Peak Riders to participate in a Charity Harley Davidson Parade. Basically we've replaced Boarin The Tunnels with a new ride,
starting and ending in Llangollen, over the Horseshoe Pass. The Llangollen
Town Council are keen for us to do it and will be publicising the event locally.
The ride is being billed as Charity Harley Davidson Parade so the public will
be encouraged to come and see the bikes. The ride starts and finishes at the
Hand Hotel which is just off the A5 right in the town centre. As usual it's £10
per bike and rider to take part (£5 per pillion), each will receive one of our
Charity Pins. No need to register, just pay on the day. We assemble from 10am
for an 11am start. The Hand Hotel will be offering reasonably priced refreshments on our return. If people want to come the night before there are loads of
B&B's and Hotels and plenty of camping in and around Llangollen. We would
welcome the Peak Riders participation, and look forward to seeing you all, so
get those flags out and bring any daft costumes you may have!!

Harley Davidson Through The Years
In 1906 A new factory, measuring 28 x 80 feet, is built on the
Chestnut St. site, later renamed Juneau Avenue. Staff size is
increased to six full-time employees. Also, the first motorcycle catalog is produced by the Company and the nickname
"Silent Gray Fellow" is used for the first time.
You should all be aware of the Charity Ride that the members
of Fenlanders Chapter are organizing to raise funds for the
Great Ormond Street Hospital. There is new scientific evidence that getting nutrition right in babies and children is of
great importance for their long term health; and in sick children it is a critical part of their medical care. “HOG Rides for
GOSH” is scheduled to take place on Sunday, the 16th of
September and all proceeds from this event will go towards:
Helping create a new department of children’s nutrition, led
by a specialist children’s doctor – a first in Britain, which will
set new standards.
Support research that will improve nutritional care of children
throughout Britain.
Help reduce the risk of obesity and heart disease in the British
population.
Train doctors and nurses in this important area.
For more information about the event and how you and your
Chapter members can register to participate please take a look
at the Fenlanders Chapter website: www.fenlandershog.com
or contact Ross St. Quintin on 07920 548999. The Chapter
that has the most motorcycles participate will be rewarded
with £200 that they can then donate to the charity of their
choice and one member of that Chapter will carry the event
flag on the ride which the Chapter will then be able to keep.
If your Chapter is interested in taking up this challenge please
contact the Fenlanders Chapter Director, Roger Stearn on
01223 245277. To take part your Chapter members must be
registered by the 25th of August.

Lightning Run
Llangollen Charity Ride
In 2004 twenty young breast cancer survivors challenged
themselves to a 1,000 mile ride on Harley-Davidson motorcycles from San Diego to San Francisco, California. Along the
way they formed life long friendships, gained support and
strength in dealing with their breast cancer experience, and
raised vital funds for and awareness of breast cancer issues.
Just a quick line to Invite Peak Riders to participate in a Charity Harley Davidson Parade. Basically we've replaced Boarin
The Tunnels with a new ride, starting and ending in Llangollen,

may have!!
This first ride expanded in 2005 to become a global relay with
1,000 mile rides in the United Kingdom, United States and
Australia, involving 48 young breast cancer survivors from
around the world. These motorcycle adventures, and other life
affirming experiences, are organised by Amazon Heart
(www.amazonheart.org), a not for profit global association of
women living with breast cancer.
This year 20 of these magnificent women will ride 1,000 miles
from Aviemore, Scotland to London.
The Harley-Davidson ® “Lightning Run” will encourage other
motorcycle riders to support these courageous women, and
give them the opportunity to raise additional funds for the
charities they support, the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity and Amazon Heart Trust UK.
Let There Be Light
Jon Halliday from Riders' Edge explains the importance to
regularly checking a bike's lights...
The Lightning Run challenge is to gain sponsorship for your
ride and visit as many authorized Harley-Davidson dealers in
the UK and Ireland within the specified event dates.
Participants will receive an exclusive event pin to signify their
level of achievement by visiting 1-10, 11-20, 21-29 or all 30
dealers. A prize will also be awarded to the participant who
raises the most money. Additional awards will be given to
H.O.G. members for the following:
-
Most miles accumulated by an individual during the event
Most ABC points accumulated by an individual during the event
Most miles in total accrued by a single UK or Eire H.O.G. Chapter
Most ABC points in total accrued by a single UK or Eire H.O.G. Chapter
All you need to do to get started is download the event guidelines and a sponsorship form by going to the Experience page
on www.harley-davidson.co.uk. Or create a fundraising page
for the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity on
www.justgiving.com.
Please encourage your Chapter members and any of your other
fellow motorcycle riders to participate and support this worthy
cause by passing this information.
The biggest cause of motorcycles failing the MOT test are
lighting defects. Unlike cars, motorcycles only have one rear
light and one brake light so, when one fails, we're left vulnerable. Now is a really good time to get out and check the lights
on your motorcycle - if you leave it until you ride next, what
are you going to do if there is a problem? Doing it now means
problems can be sorted ready for when you're ready to ride!
However, the ultimate solution to this problem has to be the
latest range of Harley-Davidson LED stop and tail lamps,
they offer high intensity lighting and are less vulnerable to
failure than standard bulbs, so even if one led should fail
you'll still have plenty more shining brightly keeping you
safe!

Ride Out News
Humber Bridge
rd
On Sunday the 3 of June we woke up to a beautiful sunny
day just right for Royce’s 1st ride out as a Road captain. 19
bikes met up at HarleyWorld to leave at 10 o clock, after a
briefing.
The ride over the bridge was awesome with people clapping,
waving off the bridges and from the roadside I felt proud to be
there.
We left for a mystery tour travelling at a nice easy pace going
through Blyth and other picturesque villages to bypass the
busy roundabout at Bawtry, taking the scenic route as opposed to the busy roads making it a pleasurable ride out before arriving at the Little Chef at South Cave for a break and
to meet up with two more people.
Our timing went a little haywire at this point, (just like any
other Sunday really, we climaxed too early), thinking that we
had too much time on our hands as we waited for our food &
drinks we found out how wrong we were, it was chaotic, due
to their lack of extra staff, despite having been told in advance, but still after being fed and watered 21 bikes then left
for the bridge.
On our arrival at the bridge we suddenly met up with hundreds of other bikes, (680 at the official count) all waiting to
register or ready to go, what a sight, it was a good time to
meet up with other chapters who we had not seen for a while.
After the ride we then mustered in the car park for a ride into
Bridlington the ride out going through Beverley, past the Minster to the South Shore where we found enough room for us all
to park and as Royce promised a café to get coffee, ice cream
and refreshments
The weather and the atmosphere was perfect and after waiting
in line for 30 minutes the whistle blew and all the bikes
started up, the noise has to be heard to be believed.
The weather had changed but was still dry but had a fret over
the sea making it cold. We left there to go to the M62 where
everyone would make his or her own way home from and yes
you guessed the sun came out again. The day had been enjoyable from start to finish with many a good laugh having been
had.

VEGAS
WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS .. but we will share some of it with you!!
June 15th arrived and after leaving heavy rain in
Sheffield we arrived to temperatures of 110o+. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were days & evenings
of retail therapy, mainly Las Vegas HD, wandering
round casinos having a little flutter (grand sum of
$10 for El at the Bellagio) and drinking shorts off
the waitresses (four for a pound!!). After a few of
these Dave tried to call the kids at some time in the
morning, obviously the numbers weren't very clear
and ended up with police knocking on our apartment door within minutes wanting a look around,
but Dave told them everything was OK and wouldn’t let them in!
On Monday we picked up two Electra Glides and
off we rode to have brunch at Bonnie Springs, near
Red Rock Canyon, the last watering hole for troops
on way to Death Valley, which has been made a
bit 'touristy' but still original machinery, roulette tables and artefacts to view and has its own, hotel,
bar and wedding chapel.
Rosies Den for refreshments. A typical American café,
bar and gift shop all rolled in to one in the middle of nowhere.
First stop on the way to route 66 was Kingman Harley
Davidson, I swear Big El can shop.
Original Route 66 was travelled for approximately 120
miles stopping off at Hackberry General Store. What an
amazing place. Full of old memorabilia and yes El did
This was when the first of many cowboy beans and
potatoes were sampled, much to Dave's approval!!
Carrying on down the road brought us to a place
called Parhump, (what you do after the cowboy
beans ) for a bit more retail therapy. WAL-MART
ROCKS.
Tuesday is when the serious stuff began. Up bright and
some shopping.

Well no time to lose and after 290 miles we checked
into the Red Feather Lodge in Tusayan just outside the
South Rim of the Canyon. El & Dave were stunned by
the size of the canyon, it may be a huge hole in the
ground but it is amazing.
Next morning we were aboard a helicopter looking
down into the Canyon, a bit dubiously by us girlies,
then off again astride bikes to the North Rim. Meeting
various chapter members on their way to rallies, a couple armed with a gun and hammer!!! Arriving at Navajo Bridge Info Centre we were advised to book accommodation before arriving at the North Rim, so
armed with a list of lodges but no phone signal we
travelled up into the scenic pine forests for about 30
miles and arrived at Jacobs Lake, what a place!! We
managed to get the last room. One room between 4 of
us you ask??? Each lodge has two bedrooms divided
by a bathroom… Ha Ha. Very cosy it was too. El entertained two Canadian bikers by opening their beer
with her teeth, who were on their way to Tennessee
for a pilgrimage to Jack Daniels and have a Jack
Daniels tattoo done. After a superb meal, we retired to
our balcony to have more beer, and a really good night
was had by all. Dave & Stuart were well on form that
night. We laughed so much Dave nearly bought a

Early Friday saw us heading for Zion National Park. What
a lovely area, we chose Pioneer Pine Lodge for our nights
stay in Springdale and when it cooled down slightly we did
the public road route on the bikes up through canyons,
pine trees and amazing scenery. In the evening we had to
stick to one bar/restaurant, with us being in Utah now they
don’t seem to drink as much as we do. Saturday morning
up 7.30 'ish to catch the shuttle bus through the main route
of Zion, we thought we were early but there was a right
queue at the bus stop!
On the way back to Vegas, we stopped at ...yes you
guessed it, Zion Harley Davidson dealership. El's purse
was out quicker than a quick draw gun slinger. We met up
with a lovely group called the Black Sheep H.O.G. Christian Harley Owners.
round. It was like something out of the film Deliverance.!!!!!! Another 270 miles covered.
8 a.m. saw us on the road again heading home to Vegas via the Valley of Fire (speaks for itself - where our
helmets were filled with water and slapped on our
heads), looking for Overton Beach what didn’t exist
anymore. Bloody maps. This was the day El decided
to take heat stroke. But after 3 hours cooling down we
set off again. Another 250 miles and 8.30 p.m. saw us
crawling into the lift to our room, managing more beer
and a Chinese.
They gave us some pins and an invite to their BBQ (more
burgers) that we managed to gate crash but we declined,
(far too much for breakfast) they told us their daughter

works in a coffee shop in Mansfield so we said we'd pay
her a visit.
Back to Vegas for more fun & frivolity. We found a
really cool place called Ellis Island. Can you believe this
a 2 course 10oz Steak Dinner for $4.95 which equates
to about £2.50. The dearest thing on the menu was
£10.00 and that was a prime rump steak. the beer was
even better 50p a PINT. Oh and they had a karaoke.
Move over Celine Dion, Big El did 4 nights live at Ellis
Island, Las Vegas.
The old part of Vegas is amazing. The Freemont Experience is brilliant. It's a giant like tunnel over the street
where they play videos and music every hour. You need
to see this. Well that is after you have called in the
Harley Davidson shop on the corner…. they get everywhere. El even managed some more purchases!!
A few more casino trips & more retail therapy and it was
time to come home and check into re-hab.
The holiday was fantastic for more reasons than we can
explain, but hope this has given you an insight into our
trip.
There were a few tipsy walks home from there too.
Before taking the bikes back on Sunday we finished off
with lunch at a Restaurant at Mount Charleston, another
amazing place which seems to be popular with local
bikers. Nice and cool and very scenic.
The lads managed to get us up Stratosphere, too high
with scary thrill rides 900 ft up. Even they wimped out
there. The views were bad enough!

People overtones but they are amazingly flexible and weather
conditions can vary incredibly throughout a day. They also pack
less in volume and weight than leather trousers.
USA—Posse Ride July 2007
Adopt this thrifty biker habit; when your knickers, T shirts, socks
etc are coming to the end of their life, give them one last wash
and dry. Use them as travelling clothes on your ride and at the
end of each day, chuck the dirty kit into the bin - no crunchy
laundry to bring home and poison the sniffer dogs at Heathrow
plus space is freed up in your luggage for pressies or for swish T
shirts to flaunt at the next Chapter meeting.
It isn’t my intention to make this a travelogue article describing (for example) the scenic delights and tourist hotspots of
Dickinson, North Dakota. This is mainly because Dickinson
doesn’t have any scenic delights; if - like me - you have a
mental jukebox playing various tunes in your head as you motor down the road, Dickinson is best described by “Duelling
banjos” from the film “Deliverance” and the hotel where I hid
for two nights was christened the “Billy Bob Motel” In fact it
was so bad, the first night we corralled the Harleys……
What I would like to pass on is the benefit of hindsight….If
this helps anyone considering their first long distance tour or
ride, so be it.
If there is just ONE THING I really would have liked on the
Posse Ride it would have been GPS. Maps are OK but only
from town to town. GPS comes into its own in the fine directional details of dealerships and hotels etc.
Bear in mind that what we pay pounds for over here they pay the
same figure but in dollars, over there. For example, dealer T
shirts are $25, new Glides are $20,000. You are only allowed to
bring in $300 worth of gifts so trying to get a new Electra Glide
into an empty suitcase isn’t really feasible.
On an allied subject, obtain a copy of Rand McNally’s Harley
Davidson © Ride Atlas of North America. It has dealership
maps, addresses and phone numbers (great if you break down)
and is pannier sized. Rand McNally don’t ship it to the UK Amazon quote 3 weeks delivery. Yes I have a copy thank
you….
Check your mobile phone works in the USA. Orange doesn’t no network available, guess what I own. Don’t get ripped off
by OTT hotel phone charges. Get a prepaid phone card from
any local store and follow the directions on the back. A $10
card gave me over two weeks of phone calls back home.
Buy a two piece rain suit. Failing that, provide your fellow
Posse Riders with hours of amusement as you struggle to get
into a one piece rain suit. In a cloudburst. On an Interstate.
Then when you’re wet through, struggle to get out again. Oh
how we laughed (not).
Buy a set of chaps. Yes I know they have serious Village
Mikes Famous Harley store Delaware
Delaware does not charge Sales Tax (usually 7-10% in other
states). This is worth knowing if you are in the area. If you are in
Idaho it is worth diddly squat.

Get insurance. The AA were the only people who I called
who would give me insurance once I mentioned the dreaded
words of “motorcycle touring in America”. I got $20 million
worth of accident and healthcare cover plus full cover for my
leathers in transit for £67ish. The only proviso was that I
MUST wear a crash helmet to approved standards. American
helmet law varies from state to state (see Rand McNally) but
while valuing the freedom of the individual, there’s something about cerebrospinal injuries and the US legal system I
don’t want to experience so I took my HD full face helmet
over and wore it religiously.
If you are in the AA over here, you may get a discount on this
price plus contacting their fellow organisation in the US - the
American AA - can get you maps, hotel discounts and reduced breakdown cover premiums.
American Police Officers have even less sense of humour that
some of their British counterparts (unbelievable though it
may seem..). Some offences over there - for which you would
only get a fine or a caution over here - carry a mandatory custodial sentence, so unless you wish to meet Bubba and his bar
of soap, get your documents in order and be polite.
The only Gas Station for 76 Miles
then will they turn the pumps on. They tend to be more relaxed the further West you go. In Oregon, you are not allowed
to fill your own vehicle up with fuel.
In a worst case scenario, expect little help from the British
Consular Service. The Diplomatic Corps take the product of
the highest educational standard of British Universities and
place them in the farthest flung corners of Empire where they
can do the least damage….
The Washington Beltway makes the M25 on a Friday night
look like a child’s roundabout at a country fair recently visited
by bubonic plague. Do not attempt it for your first ride on
American roads on an unfamiliar bike 36 hours after arriving
in the country - in other words, not like I did!!
There is a condition familiar to long distance riders called
Monkey Butt. It is cured by hydrocortisone cream available
from all pharmacies. You may wonder how I know this….
Keep photocopies of all ID - passport, driving licence, insurance policies etc in a different place from the originals.
Most importantly of all - enjoy yourself!! This is what you’ve
done it for! Take plenty of photos, have plenty of laughs,
make plenty of friends and after all these pitfalls and potential
problems (and the cost!!), would I do it all again, a woman on my own, not far short of her 50th birthday??
Americans do like Photo ID. Don’t be surprised if you get
asked for Photo ID when using your credit card - they don’t
think you look under 21, its just a security check.
On the subject of credit cards, tell your card provider you are
going to the USA so they can increase the level of card security as it covers you in case of attempted identity fraud. The
downside is that VISA will charge you 2.75% on all card purchases over there. I block booked my Harley hire and hotel
rooms in advance over t’internet and paid cash for fuel.
On the East Coast, you have to inform the cashier you wish to
pay cash for gas, leave the money with the cashier and only

CB Radio (available on Electra Glides)
The Citizen's Band (CB) Radio Service, also
known simply as CB, is a public, two-way personal radio service. The CB radio became a fad in
the 1970s. Mobile CB operation is not as popular
today as it was in the 70’s and "CB'ers" engaged in
fixed operation from homes is almost non existent.
CB operation takes place within a narrow band of
frequencies near 27 MHz. There are 40 channels in
this band. These channels were overcrowded in
previous years and a few channels have a designated use :Channel 9
Channel 14
Channel 19

Competitions / Puzzles
This month we bring you a Questions competition, your answers are to sent in to
steve@poultons.freeserve.co.uk or handed in at HarleyWorld Chesterfield by the 23rd August 2007
The competition will be judged by Steve Poulton and/or the HarleyWorld Staff and their decision will be
final, the winner of this months competition will win a Baseball Cap
This was certainly the worst I ever had. My dad
brought it home from a bloke at his works as a nonrunner. I had it in the mid 60’s when MOT tests
were young. I actually pushed this thing to the bike
shop for its MOT. I had to push it because it wouldn’t go. IT PASSED THE TEST as a non-runner.
Could this happen today? It did work sometimes
because these pictures were taken at the farmhouse
home in Worcestershire of the girlfriend of the time
(don’t tell Janet). It was eventually dumped because
we lost the will to live trying to keep it running. The
girl friend dumped me, the swine!
1. The registration shows the numbers first and the letters second, “331 KPU” when was this reversal first used?
2. Can you name the manufacturer of this scooter
3. Can you name the country of the manufacturer (non-UK)?
4. There is a strong connection between the manufacturer and the famous British Bike manufacturer Triumph. Do you know
what it is?
This one is really obscure – you will do well if you can get it.
Answers to Last Months Competition(s) / Puzzle(s)
Top marks and first prize to Pete Oates for squeezing this on to the
bitter end. I got 28 bikes (see below) and Pete (after 3 trys) got 25 of
mine and some others I’ve never heard of so I just counted the 25.
Good entries from John Beevers (23) and Tom Lazenby (20). The
words have to be in a straight line.
