Biggs Chapter North San Diego County HOG Express September 2004 H.O.G. Chapter 0270 Notes from the Road - Posse Ride 2004 Chapter Meeting September 10 by Nelson Petrey You learn a lot from a ride the magnitude of the Posse Ride, by personal experience as well as from the stories of your riding companions. What follows is some of what I learned and experienced. th at Biggs in San Marcos 7:00 pm The store will close at 7:00 pm - shop early. Website www.BiggsHOG.com Ride Line (760) 736-2920 o Two of our chapter members learned not to hang their helmets upside down on their bikes during a thunderstorm. This happened during the dinner and stage show at the Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs. I'm not naming names, but neither was of the male persuasion. o Someone on the Durango dealer/HOG Chapter food committee should have been put in charge of buying paper plates to serve the potato salad, baked beans, macaroni salad, before the 500 Posse bikes and riders showed up for the Bar-B-Q. And when the oversight is discovered, the guy sent to the store should have understood that napkins are not an acceptable substitute. Best to have sent an LOH lady, who truly understood the problem, to the store. o Heeding the weather signs and taking the time to put on all your rain gear, about 20 minutes, will usually ensure clearing skies and hot muggy weather. o Not packing any rain gear when you leave Texas will give you and Noah a lot to talk about. o After dropping your bike twice in the pouring rain coming from Texas, it is OK to accept the offer from the nice man with the trailer. o The odds of putting on the right gloves for the prevailing weather are directly proportionate to the number of gloves available. I carried six pair and seldom got it right. The ability to change gloves while riding is an expensive skill to develop. I have to brag about the skill I discovered I have at catching things with my elbows before I figured out what the strap is for. I really love my tank bag. I keep my six pairs of gloves in it. It also has a clear plastic map pouch on top so I can carry a map that shows exactly where I should be regardless of where I actually am. Nelson and his 2000 Dyna ready to ride. It seems just like yesterday that the year began. But, we have come so far in these months, and I am so excited to throw my name into the hat again. When our Primary and Secondary Officer team first got together I knew that we had a winner. You could feel the synergy in the room; it was contagious and the new ideas just started flowing. As Director, you know you need to encourage folks to think out of the box and try not to use the phrase "we tried that before and it didn't work." Well, that has been the way we have treated the planning for this year, and I am proud of the great job our officers have done in managing the affairs of your HOG group. You know the phrase "you can not please them all" - well folks, we have tried; and I think we have done a great job at meeting all of our member's needs and concerns. I hope that you feel the same way about Biggs Chapter North San Diego County HOG' and by all means if you feel we have not met your needs, please contact me or one of your Primary Officers. As most of you know when we agree to a primary position, we agree to a two-year term but must still hold ourselves out for an election process. If I am re-elected, I look forward to another year as your Director, and one of the most important job responsibilities I have this year is to find and train my replacement and to remind everyone that HOG's motto is "To Ride and Have Fun". BIO FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Jerry Gleiforst For those of you who do not know me, here is a brief background. Born and raised in San Diego, yes, a real native. Attended Grossmont High School, Grossmont College and graduated from San Diego State University. Two careers beginning with Deluxe Corporation, a Fortune 500 Company in Sorrento Valley for 23 years. After the closing of our division in 1996, I purchased my own company in Oceanside called Minuteman Press. I have eight employees one of which is my daughter, Ami, the shining star in my life. I have been in a Management position for the last 28 years. I have always dealt with people by the old verbiage, "treat others the way you would like to be treated." My wife, Sue is our H.O.G. Chapter's LOH Officer, which I am sure most of you know. We have been involved in our H.O.G. Chapter as volunteers in one form or another for the last five years. Over this time I have met some really great people and gained some really good friends. This year as Assistant Director, I have had the opportunity to work with a great staff of officers who we have had leading our H.O.G. Chapter. We have established some new guidelines and policies but always had the mindset to Ride Safe and Have Fun. I personally have had the opportunity to be part of our State H.O.G. Rally establishing an Observation Ride sponsored by our H.O.G. Chapter and Sponsoring Dealership – Biggs. www.BiggsH-D.com At the 2004 Harley-Davidson Summer Dealer Show, Jim McCaslin, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company communicated the current direction of many state and local governments regarding the noise pollution issue. He stressed the need for each of the dealerships to be part of the solution and not part of the problem, Please visit our news page on www.biggsh-d.com to read more about what Jim McCaslin said and what some communities are doing about the noise issue. Page 3 September 2004 BIO FOR SECRETARY Jan Ferris It has been very enjoyable being your Secretary for the last 2 years. If elected, 2005 will be my last year as Secretary. All positions need to rotate to bring in fresh ideas and to put a new spin on the Best Chapter around. Over the last 2 years, we have brought on a Computer Database program for new membership, developed new procedures, putting them in writing for future officers. Being your Chapter Secretary can be a demanding position for some people and for others it will be what you want it to be. You keep records of all events, keep files, answers questions and of course, Ride and Have Fun! If you are detailed minded, an organizer and have verbal and computer skills, you would be a perfect candidate for 2006. As of August 2004 we have grown to over 565 members. As Secretary and a Primary Officer you are sometimes the first person to have contact with a potential new member. That's the best part of all. Meeting new members, developing new friendships and extending your family to include H.O.G. members. Thank you for all the confidence you have given and entrusted to me over the last few years. The Director (my husband) said this isn't a BIO it's a job description. Well, it's a little of both. I hope you can tell, I really like this position; but change is always needed. I hope I will have your vote this October. Ride Safe and Have Fun!! Jan Ferris, "Proud to be a Passenger" BIO FOR TREASURER Martin Kelinsky As your current Treasurer, I wish to continue serving as Treasurer in our local HOG chapter to do my part in contributing to our Chapter as it continues to thrive through great member participation. This is a position that I have enjoyed fulfilling while enabling me to be more directly involved in our chapter operation. I’ve been riding a motorcycle for over 30 years and have been a lifemember of HOG since 1993. Prior to relocating to San Marcos, I was the Web page designer and maintainer for the Rockville MD HOG chapter. My professional career has been in the Telecommunications field where I most recently was manager of a team developing technical operational processes. I am very conscientious, detail oriented, and exact in working with numeric data. I have always maintained very organized records and quite frankly don’t mind completing annual tax returns. My other interests include: woodworking, community theatre, volunteer work, gardening, and skeet shooting. Over the years, I have volunteered in various organizations. I trust this work experience demonstrates my competence to serve as your Treasurer. o Three years as Treasurer for Hexagon, Inc which is a charitable community theater fund raising organization. Also served on its Board of Director’s for an additional year as VP for Production. o Five years as Treasurer for Home Owners Organization o Three years as Treasurer for the Capital Area Woodturners Club o Performed as Owner, Book keeper and Treasurer for Furniture Repair Franchise o Two years on the Board of Directors of the work Employee’s Association with one year as President. I look forward to continuing as your Treasurer and will successfully fulfill all the required duties as well as serving as one of the Primary Officers of the chapter. We used more oil that expected, probably from sustained high speed cruising. I had to put some non-HD oil in both bikes. At Sioux Falls we had the dealer change the oil and front tires on both bikes. By the way, I was on my 2000 Dyna and Barbara was on her 2003 Buell Lightning with the race kit installed. We checked the odometer when we got the bikes back from service and for some reason it took the technicians seven miles more to do the post-maintenance check ride on the Buell than my Dyna. o We preach a lot about the dangers of riding close to large trucks when you overtake them because of the dangers of tire debris. A lot of the Posse Ride was on two lane roads with semis passing in the opposite direction. If an exploding tire is dangerous when overtaking, imagine adding the combined speed of vehicles passing in the opposite direction, possibly over 130 MPH. Day after day I watched bikes crowd the centerline with semis passing in the opposite direction. Be smart. Give trucks a wide berth regardless of the direction of their travel. o The Buell ran over something 45 miles west of Lafayette on the way home. The tire patch kit I carry was not up to the size of the tear in the center of the tread. We called HOG Roadside Assistance. They were very good. A tow truck was dispatched that took the bike to the Lafayette dealer. There was a motel next door. This was Sunday and the dealer was closed. We were at the dealer when it opened, and they replaced the tire immediately. HOG Roadside Assistance covered $100 of the $175 towing bill. Don't forget you have that service. o Montana is a large state with a small population. I think the people there have a sense of humor. We spent hours traveling Route 12 as it meandered through the ranch land. All we saw were small wandering herds of cattle, a few horses and two zebras. No lesson here. I just wanted to share the image of a lone pair of zebras quietly grazing on a vast prairie as if they belonged there. The image made my day. o We were on the road for 26 days and covered 8219 miles. We hauled 93 lbs of luggage; 51 on the Buell, and 42 on the Dyna. We planned to travel 400 miles per day to and from the event. Average distances per day during the Posse Ride were less. We planned all of our gas stops before we left home. We reviewed and made adjustments for each day the night before. There was little variance from the original plan. Gas stops were targeted for every 100 miles. This interval seems to make riding more fun. Research sources before the ride included HOG, AAA, State Tourism Bureaus, and the National Park Service. Consider keeping a journal on long trips as Barbara does. Otherwise it all just becomes a foggy blur. When we arrived home, it seemed we had only been gone a week. o I have written a lot about proper dressing for summer riding especially for the desert. I have now found a system that is a quantum improvement. Barbara and I bought riding jackets to provide crash protection. They are abrasion resistant, won't melt to your skin from road friction, and have armor inserts in critical areas. The manufacturer said they were good in the desert heat if you wore a long-sleeved moisture wicking synthetic t-shirt like Capalene underneath. I was skeptical. But it works. The jackets are light colored and reflect the sun's heat. The fabric is primarily a heavy open mesh that allows free air flow. The t-shirts wick the perspiration from the skin and help evaporate it allowing the body's temperature regulation to work. It would be nice to quantify the system's effectiveness. The closest I can come is to say that Barbara normally consumes 120 ounces of water a day between gas stops in the desert heat. With the jacket and t-shirt she consumed less than 40 ounces and was properly hydrated. When we stopped at Needles for gas it was 115F. We were very hot but could tell the improvement over previous trips. Several riders on the Posse Ride questioned our wearing bulky jackets in the heat, but we were doing better than they were. Barbara and her 2003 Buell XB9S ready to ride. o You would think all Harley riders know how to ride in formation, but you would be wrong. About 20 Colorado Springs Motor Officers escorted the Posse bikes to the Garden of the Gods where the Mayor welcomed us and a group photo was taken. Getting 500 bikes anywhere is major task. It went well, but I found there are riders that think that "Stagger" is what you do between the time you get off your bike and you fall down, and "Single File" is where you keep the names and addresses of your riding buddies that aren't married. September 2004 Page 5 CHANGE IS IN THE AIR Prince Phillip of England once said, "Change does not change tradition. It strengthens it." The HarleyDavidson Motor Company must believe that truer words were never spoken as the 2005 lineup of Motorcycles were revealed last month. The 2005 models are arriving daily with six new models to choose from this year! So please, come in and check out the latest from the Motor Company. George Bernard Shaw was quoted as saying, "Progress is impossible without change." That progress was realized this last model year by our sales department who were able to sell out all the 2004 HarleyDavids on mo de ls ! Congratulations to our award-winning staff lead by Eric Gershon who received JAN’S BACKSEAT NOTES Jim Lillibridge Harley-Davidson's Platinum Sales Manager of the Year! and apparel will be available for our customers. Alexander Chase once said, "To remain young one must change." What better way to look young than in the new line of Harley-Davidson MotorClothes™? This month our MotorClothes Department welcomes the addition of Cammie Springer as the Manager of the MotorClothes Department. She comes to us from Destination HarleyDavidson where she was MotorClothes Manager. Cammie was influential in receiving the Merchandiser of the Year award for the Western Region for that dealership in 2004! And with a great supporting staff here at Biggs Harley-Davidson/Buell we are confident that the latest in merchandise, collectibles Kathleen Norris stated, "None of us knows what the next change is going to be, what unexpected opportunity is just around the corner, waiting to change all the tenor of our lives." Here at Biggs HarleyDavidson/Buell we don't know how much the 'change' alters the 'tenor of our lives' but we do focus on continual improvement and customer satisfaction. Changes that have received rave reviews from our customers include the creation of a more accessible lounge area with vending availability as well as wiring the building for sound. Biggs HarleyDavidson/Buell has made a commitment to listening to the customers needs. Please continue to provide input by providing your suggestions in the suggestion box located in the front entrance area in San Marcos. You, our customers, are a vital part of our team and we could not improve without you! Jan Ferris Well, another month goes by! 23 new members for August. We now have a total of 566 members. FANTASTIC!!!!!!! It was great being back after missing two months of General Meetings. I missed seeing everyone. I would like to give a “SPECIAL THANK YOU” to Kathy Venable for stepping up and filling in for me during that time. Chapter Picture? I can’t wait to see our Chapter Picture. We have not had one since 2000. We will be submitting our picture to Hog Tales for publication in that magazine. We hope it will be in around the Holidays if not then, maybe the first of the year. We will also have a new H.O.G. wall at the San Marcos Dealership. This will be down by the vending machines. Watch for our plaques and pictures to go up on the wall within the next month. Don’t forget to check in at the tables at the General Meetings each month and pick up your 10% discount card for the next month use. Until Next Month Ride Safe and Have Fun! Jan Ferris Secretary “Proud to be a Passenger” Biggs Harley-Davidson/ Buell wants to thank all of you who took part in making 2004 so successful. We look forward to the growth and change that will inevitably occur during this model year 2005. Our hope is to continually improve on our ability to provide you with service by delivering quality product in the finest way with the best attitude and the greatest value! Biggs HarleyDavidson/Buell cannot be afraid to take this step into the future. As David Lloyd George once said, "Don't be afraid to take a big step if one is indicated. You can't cross a chasm in two small steps." Page 6 HOG Express Calendar of Events Calendar Legend Open – is advertised as open to the public or where guests outnumber members. BUT ... If you haven't already, go check out the Posse Ride commentary that Bill Davis posted on his website at www.customsystemsinc.com and click on Ride. He has a day-byday story that is very interesting. He took a lot more photographs than we did and covered a lot more territory. October will be another Theme month for the HOG Express – Road Trips. Send me the stories of your road trips; if you have some photos, send those as well. We may even have a special award for the best road trip story at the annual Holiday party on December 10th. Deadline for Road Trip articles is the 20th of September. HOG s s e r Exp Don't forget about the $100 award for the best story. You still have two months to submit that article. The award will be presented at the annual Holiday party on December 10th. Deadline for submission of best story articles is October 20th. If you have digital photos for the website or newsletter, send them to Kurt Boyack or myself. If you have regular photos, I can scan them and return the original (or pass them along to our new historian, Melanie McMullen). ED. – I did leave my helmet upside down; but I remembered as it started raining. Nelson ran out and brought it inside for me. The inside of the helmet was damp. Even though his helmet was right side up, the straps dangled and wicked a lot of rain up into the padding. We both had wet helmets. Riding at night in the Biggs Chapter North San Diego County Harley Owners Group P. O. Box 610 San Marcos, CA 92079-0610 rain is my second least favorite part of motorcycling (riding in sleet, hail, and snow is at the top of my un-favorite list). Below: We took 30 seconds and drove through 4 states before having our picture taken at the Four Corners Monument.
