Posse Ride 2005

Barb and I were sitting around one weekend not doing much when
the phone rang. It was Eric, one of our ridding buddies of the
sportbike persuasion. He was really excited. I asked him where he
was. He said he was at the Barber Raceway in Birmingham, AL for the
motorcycle races, which is exciting, but what really had Eric wired was
the Barber Motorsport Museum next to the track. He had somehow
gotten himself onto the restoration floor and had talked to Mr. Barber
himself. Eric went on about the museum and his conversation with Mr.
Barber. He said we had to see the place.
The Posse Ride started in Mobile, AL this year; guess what is only a
few hours' ride north? So the Barber Museum was the first stop on our
summer adventure.
It is truly amazing. The grounds, the racetrack, and the museum
building are all beautiful. There is a large circle in front of the museum
paved in black and white tiles (checkered flag style) that is reserved
for motorcycle parking. Sculptures on the plush front lawn of human
figures each standing on the axle of a single wheel project a sense of
surreal motion. There are five floors to the museum. An open
architecture allows you to see all the floors from each floor. Most of

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Jerry Gleiforst
Last year at Primary Officers Training, the group of us that participated
came away with knowledge passed on by National H.O.G.
The Risk
Management that the Chapters must be aware of is very important and
needs to be passed on to our members. So, this month, please read about
Risk Management and please help us in any way you can to keep this
Chapter safe and running as smooth as it does. Thanks to our great
members who watch out for each other to meet this end.
Risk Management
Biggs Chapter North San Diego County Guidelines
MANAGING RISK
Conduct Chapter and officer duties responsibly by eliminating the risks
you can and controlling the rest.
RISK AREAS
The risk areas include Business Risks, Regulatory Risks, Alcohol related
Risks and Responsibility for Injury Risks.
Managing Business Risk:
o
Biggs Chapter North San Diego County has incorporated which
makes legal responsibilities predictable and also shifts legal
responsibilities from individuals to the corporation.
o
Contracts are agreements, which are enforceable by law. Contracts
are to be reviewed by our sponsoring dealership, and signed by our
dealer liaison.
o
Beware of indemnity clauses.
o
Don’t hold dual-produced events.
o
The Chapter Charter protects Chapter’s right to use current H.O.G.
trademarks and logos. Use of the marks is limited.
Managing Regulatory Risk:
o
Systems are in place to properly conduct regulated activities such as
all Government rules and regulations. Gambling is regulated or
prohibited in every state. We have determined that raffles and
50/50 drawings fall under the law term as deminimus. That is too
small to worry about.
(Continued on page 3)
Page 3
September 2005
(Continued from page 2)
Managing Alcohol-Related Risk:
o
o
Alcohol increases the risk of
injury, it is illegal to drink and
drive and H.O.G. insurance does
not cover alcohol-related claims.
National H.O.G. recommends
and this Chapter and our
Sponsoring Dealership has
adopted a policy of no alcohol
before or during a riding event.
The Chapter will not furnish
alcohol at any event.
Managing Responsibility for Injury
Risk:
o
This is a great benefit of H.O.G.
and H.O.G. pays for basic policy
o
Covers legal defense and
damage payments
o
Provides comprehensive event
and activity coverage
o
Coverage is automatic for many
typical Chapter activities – no
paper work required
o
Releases must be signed upon
joining our Chapter. This release
covers our Members for all
CLOSED events. Additional
releases must be signed
depending upon the type of
event.
o
Types of events:
OPEN is advertised as open
to the public or where guests
outnumber members. Open
events require ALL people to
sign a release.
CLOSED is closed to the
public; participation is
limited to Chapter members
and guests only, and guests
do no outnumber members.
Chapter members over the
age of 18 do not have to sign
a new release. All guests and
minors must sign a release.
MEMBERS-ONLY:
participation is limited to
National H.O.G. members
only. Everyone signs a
release.

DIRECTOR BIO
Dale Davis
Hi! My name is Dale Davis and I am proud to
have been nominated for Director of this fine H.
O.G Chapter. A little about my Chapter History:
I have been a member of this Chapter since
1998, and I have been a volunteer for several
events over the years such as Heart Ride,
Valentines Ride, Road Kill Rodeo, Formation 201
and others. I have been a Road Guard since the
program’s inception and served as Road Captain
in 2003 and 2004. I have served as Road Guard
At Large in 2002 and this year, 2005, and have
served on the Road Guard Panel from 2003 to
present.
You will see my wife Linda and I on an
Orange and White 1998 Heritage Softail or an
Orange and Black 2004 Screamin’ Eagle Electra
Glide. Linda and I have had the pleasure to
participate in over one hundred fifty Chapter
rides. I have been married to Linda for 36 years,
and we have five children and six grandchildren.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR BIO
Hi, my name is Terry Warner. I started riding
at age 13 (not counting mini-bikes, which is
where I got hooked on riding). I have owned
numerous motorcycles, both street and dirt.
Since then I have spent only one month (the
worst month) without a motorcycle of some sort
in the garage. At age 14, a friend and I rode
back to Killeen, TX. I had a sleeping bag and
gear bungee-corded onto my Honda 305 Dream
for a rider back rest and a broken broom handle
shoved between the exhaust and engine for
highway pegs.
I currently have a 2001 Heritage Softail and a
1999 Road King. I joined the Chapter in May of
2002 and became a Road Guard in 2003. I have
held three offices in the Chapter:
2004
Activities, 2005 Road Captain, and (as near as
I am a California
registered Professional
Land
Surveyor and
have been employed at
a private surveying firm in Carlsbad since 1992,
and before that, a private engineering firm for 21
years. I have held management positions at
both firms for a combined 18 years.
If elected, I will serve the Chapter with the
Chapter’s best interest at heart. I will continue
the family-oriented values that our Chapter has
adopted. I will encourage and work with Chapter
Officers to foster fresh ideas for activities and
events. I’m a big believer in “ride and have fun”
and our established riding culture. I believe that
as part of having fun on our rides, safety is
paramount. I vow to continue our Chapter’s
safety programs and functions and to serve the
Chapter as Director with a servant’s heart.

not yet served as the
Safety Fairy.
I always keep in
mind that this isn't just
my Chapter, it's also
your Chapter.
The
direction the Chapter
takes is one that the membership can agree to by
general consensus.
I will never ignore your
input. Keeping the open and friendly atmosphere
of our HOG group is a must as is having it family
friendly. One thing I personally need to change
is the way I adhere to our motto, "Live to ride
and ride to eat". I should do more of the first
part and less of the second.
ABCs of Safety - October 23
Remember that you can collect an
“ABC wildcard” at any Chapter event that
the Safety Fairy attends - just ask for
one. These wildcards will help you win
games and earn prizes on the day of the
event. Watch the website for details, the
flyer will be out very shortly.

SECRETARY BIO
Bridget Adams
My name is Bridget Adams. I would like to
serve our Chapter as Secretary.
My riding
experience began when I was 19. In college, my
daily commuter was my Honda dirt bike. After
college, I traded my 2 wheels in for a couple of
anchors. I served in the Navy for five years;
including a tour aboard the destroyer tender USS
Prairie, on which I completed a 6-month
deployment at sea. Enter Don Adams. And the
rest is history.
After 15 years of marriage, Don wore me
down and we got bikes again. We joined both
the local and national HOG chapters. I have
enjoyed volunteering for different activities in
our Chapter, and I particularly enjoy serving as
your current keeper of the feather pins.
In my professional life I teach literature,
writing and history to 7th graders. My students
think it's pretty cool that their "female" teacher
rides to school on a motorcycle.
I haven't
figured out yet how that contributes to their
education, but I'm working on it.
SECRETARY BIO
Over the course of
my Navy tour and my
teaching
career,
my
friends and coworkers
have accused me of
being a highly organized
person. This, along with
my ability to express
myself verbally and in
writing, will be invaluable as the Chapter
Secretary. I have reviewed the job description of
the Chapter Secretary, and feel confident that, if
elected, I will serve the Chapter well.
And what an awesome Chapter it is! Over
600 members strong and we continue, year after
year, to provide a safe and welcoming
atmosphere that encourages new members to
join and attend. I would like to do my part to
continue this tradition by serving as your
Secretary.
Todd “Hangman” Miller
Since joining our Chapter in July 2001 I have
been fortunate to watch our organization grow
by leaps and bounds. Our Chapter has been the
beneficiary of folk who have committed a great
deal of time and effort to enhance our Chapter,
but it is now time again for new blood to feed
this machine. I owe it to our Chapter to step
forth and, by sheer dint of circumstances, am
now able to contribute to a greater degree.
House of Harleys) on an
impulse and joined the
Chapter that same day.
My
other
hobbies
include golf and scuba
diving.
Both of my
daughters are now in
college; hence, another
reason why I have a bit more free time.
Like our Chapter, I too have evolved. My
first year or so, I only rode with the Chapter
when the GAR was scheduled. Then I started
participating in other Chapter Rides and other
events while at the same time I started doing
some volunteer work. Recently, I became a
RGIT (Road Guard In Training).
I am seeking your consideration as the next
Secretary, Biggs Chapter North County San Diego
H.O.G. Chapter. I presently sit on the Boards of
three corporations and have for the past three
years served as Secretary for two corporations. I
previously served as a Director of Ranasinghe’
Trust/Estate Holdings; Vice Chairman and Senior
Fellow of the American Congress of Global
Executives [ACGE]; and Secretary, B.U.C. Oxford.
I have earned undergraduate degrees in Business
Management and Liberal Arts/Science; and hold a
MBA in Global Management.
I began riding mini-bikes at the age of six (I
was a tad shorter then), played a while with dirt
bikes, and have stayed on two wheels ever
since. I currently ride an XL883 Hugger that I
bought from Joseph L. Lillibridge at 1555 South
Coast Highway (formerly known as Harley's

TREASURER BIO
As your current Chapter Treasurer I am
submitting my name to be re-elected as
Treasurer for the 2006 term as one of your
Primary Officers. I continue to enjoy fulfilling the
duties and quite frankly, since it meshes so
nicely with my time availability, I don’t even
notice the hours that I put into it. I get to
practice my signature on all the checks I write
and you know, isn’t working with money fun!
I’ve been riding a motorcycle (not the same
one) for over 30 years and have been a lifemember of HOG since 1993 and a member of
this chapter since about January 2003.
I’m currently retired, but my professional
career was in the Telecommunications field
where I most recently was manager of a team
developing technical operational processes. I am

these work experiences have honed my skills to
continue to serve as your Treasurer.
And
obviously, my dedication has been demonstrated
during my current tenure.
Looking forward to serving you again next

$10,000.00 Heart Ride Hat Sponsor
At Heart Ride 2004 we introduced our first
Heart Ride custom-designed ball cap, designed
by Scott Jacobs, which became an instantaneous
success. This year we are seeking a corporate
sponsor to underwrite the cost of our 2nd annual
custom-designed ball cap.
Sponsorship includes your company name
and/or logo embroidered on the back of each
cap. There will be approximately 2,500 caps
distributed at Heart Ride 2005.
Below is a sample of the Heart Ride 2004
design and we are currently working on this
year’s design.
the Brits. And I thought they only had trouble
with us bloody Colonials.
The "Hangman" led the first 2½ laps before
succumbing to early Michelin tire wear just as
the "King's" Bridgestone tires finally warmed up,
thus allowing the "King" to redeem himself from
his three previous defeats earlier in the night; he
finally passed the "Hangman". Despite additional
mechanical imbalances (power to weight ratio
discrepancies) with the "King", the "Hangman"
could not just cruise to his third straight victory
of this season.
Tony "Digger" Cash was influenced by his
natural parental instincts to remind his young
pup of a son, Joshua "Da Man" Cash, who "Da
Real Man" was. I am told, that "Digger" spun
"Da Man" a couple of times including planting
him into the wall - just as a reminder of the
pecking order in one's family tree.
What concerns me is: what would have
happened had the Brits focused on us Colonials?
As the final race times reflect, for now the
Colonials remain the Top Dogs.
The final results of K1 HOG Battle; 1st
Position, Jerry "King" Gleiforst finished the race
in (7min, 51 sec).
Todd "Hangman" Miller
followed in 2nd (-5.09 seconds behind), 3rd Tony
"Digger" Cash (-10.09), and 4th Joshua "Da
Man" Cash (-13.77).

K-1 KARTING
Todd “Hangman” Miller
"Revolutionary War…Part Duex"
New Track. New Competitors. Britain versus the U.S. Limies versus
the Yanks. Experienced European Racers versus the Wannabe Warriors.
The cream of the crop from both sides of the pond paced back and forth
impatiently awaiting the race start. The "Porsche Club" ran a full Grand
Prix that lasted over two hours, delaying our race; thus intensifying the
competitive juices for us HOG folk, who in turn killed the time and
participated in a couple of other challenges prior to our monthly K1 HOG
race.
The first challenge was a F355 Road Race that pitted the Jerry "King"
Gleiforst against his arch nemesis, Todd "Hangman" Miller. Despite having
Tony "Digger" Cash navigating (who has actually navigated professional
Rally Cars abroad) for the "King", still suffered a humiliating defeat to the
"Hangman".
Tony "Digger" Cash brought on his own issues for the night. His son
Joshua "Da Man" Cash was brought in to be another ringer (an experienced
European Kart Racer) in an attempt to dethrone the "King". During the
aforementioned delay, "Da Man" (suffering from an acute case of
testosterone overload) challenged his decrepit old man to the same F355
Road Race. Whilst "Da Man" did squeeze out a "false" victory over dear old
"Dad" we knew that "Digger" was already plotting his revenge. "Da Man"
was oblivious to what was about to occur.
The last of the pre-race competitions again pitted the "King" against the
"Hangman" on the Motocross from Hades. The "Hangman" again slapped
the "King" around in this video game. The "Hangman" was now 2-0 versus
the "King" … and the "Hangman" was not done yet.
The qualifying times were much slower than before (new track layout).
Due to the previous high speeds being attained was costing K1 an
extraordinary expense, in repairing the Karts? The qualifying times were as
follows; Todd "Hangman" Miller qualified with a time of (33.42), upsetting
Jerry "King" Gleiforst who followed in 2nd with a (33.62), 3rd Tony "Digger"
Cash (34.20), and 4th Joshua "Da Man" Cash (35.61). Despite the "King"
pre-riding the new track earlier in the day, the "Hangman" out drove the
"King" taking a 3-0 lead for the night. The U.S. team took first and second
starting positions on the grid and took full advantage of the feud between

FROM THE LADIES OF HARLEY
Sue Gleiforst
Your LOH team is working on two events for
September. The first one may be already over by
the time you get this newsletter. This event would
be the Labor Day Big Bear trip. I certainly hope
you took advantage of the opportunity to have a
great ride, a great time by the pool, and to enjoy
the absolutely fabulous party that Janice and Larry
put on for us.
Also, the other event is our 5th Annual LOH
Progressive Brunch.
We will be going to four
different houses – riding and eating our way
through North County. It’s just $20.00 per person
for this event, and you can’t believe all the food
there is. Please sign up at the next LOH or Chapter
meeting. We limit this event to 75 people. We
hope to see you all there.
Please join us for our next LOH meeting on
September 14 at Dalton’s Roadhouse in San
Marcos. Come one- come all. Come on out you
guys and join us. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
but join us for dinner at 6:00 p.m. if you like.
Ride safe and have fun.
Your LOH team,
Sue and Kathy
SAFETY NOTES

A Position Change
The Posse Ride gave me an opportunity to
study a riding procedure problem, namely lane
positioning. In stagger formation we ride in the
center of the left or right third of the lane. In a 12foot lane, the bike is centered two feet from the
edge of the lane using this procedure. This is not
much distance from the edge.
When you are
imprecise, as when you are tired or distracted, you
wander and come very close to the edge. Leaning
in turns can easily put you over the line. Some
bikes with crash bars and highway pegs on the
outside are over the line already. I noticed some
cars were slowing up and or moving to the far side
of their lane to pass. There has been at least one
case where one of our riders had their mirror hit by
a car passing it the opposite direction.
I brought this up at the last Road Guard
meeting for discussion. The result was a change in
our riding practices that will be documented in the
HOG Express
ROAD CAPTAIN
Terry Warner
Riding The Chapter Way
As some of you may or may not know, myself
and nine other chapter members rode from here to
Sturgis South Dakota. Although this was not a
chapter ride we still used our chapter riding style,
just at a little quicker clip. We covered around
3,700 miles round trip from here to Sturgis,
through the Black Hills and Yellowstone, down to
Idaho Falls, over to Carson City and home.
What was amazing to me was the way other
groups were riding. Some would pass another
vehicle and just fan out across the road. Most, as
soon as a signal light turned green, would be like
pellets out of a shotgun. They just scattered. All
seemed to be looking at “right now” traffic. While
that’s all well and good, our ride leaders not only
did that but also paid attention to what was way
down the road. The leader knew what he wanted
to do with the group and read the traffic the way as
we do on chapter rides. Even as crowded as that
rally was, we had very few problems and arrived at
our destination with less hassle than most and still
in one group. Our techniques really do work.
Until we ride again
Terry
Safety Notes - continued
next revision of the Group Riding Manual.
In
stagger, riders are to position the center of their
bike in the center of the left or right half of the
lane. In a 12-foot lane, the bike will be centered
three feet from the edge of the lane.
Good
judgment, as always, is paramount in riding safely
and you may need more clearance; take it.

I went into nostalgia overload within five minutes of entering

was not a planned stop on the ride, but that's another story).
Although I made it to Woodstock 36 years late, the weather wasn't
any better. I picked up a copy of The American Motorcyclist
magazine from the coffee table and started thumbing through the
pages; there was Mr. Barber's beautiful yellow KHK. I wish I had
checked the month of the issue.
The KHK
Photo: Nelson Petrey
The cars in the museum were mostly vintage racing with some
contemporary ones. Among the racing cars was a Lotus 22
formula car, like my first real racing car.
Eric was right. The Barber Museum is fabulous. See it if you
can. It is world class.
Mobile
Registration for the Posse Ride was Saturday, the day before
Fathers' Day. The day was cloudy and rain was threatening. Barb
had parked her Buell at the motel, and we were two up on my
Harley. Heading back from registration, we were stopped behind a
string of cars at a light. Up ahead was and old, thin, black man
with a scraggly gray beard walking between the row of cars selling
newspapers. As he passed us he nodded and said some greeting;
we acknowledged. He then stopped, backed up, and said "Where
y'all from? Y'all look too well turned out to be from 'round here."
We were wearing our grey ballistic riding jackets and black
helmets - not what I consider a fashion statement. We answered
in unintended unison "California". He began to grin, handed Barb
a paper, and said "This is on me." He then peeled a dollar off a
roll in his hand, stuck it in my glove, and said "Happy Fathers'
Day" It seemed like we had made his day. He made ours. I don't
think I'm going to spend that dollar. Next time you see me, just
ask and I'll show it to you.
The Ride
Ride, eat, ride, eat, ride, eat, sleep. Repeat. What more could
you ask for?
Milwaukee
We had to get up at the crack of dawn for the final ride from
Elkhart, IN into Milwaukee, WI. We rode to within about 60 miles
of Milwaukee and formed up in to a single group for the final ride
to town and Harley headquarters on Juneau Avenue. We were
about three quarters back in the group. We rode in the center
lane of the interstate. Even on the long straight sections I could
not see the front of the train of bikes. This was impressive. As we
rode I noticed that there were people on the overpasses waving to
us. We were quite a spectacle. Of course, we waved back. Then
Nelson at the city limits of his ancestral home
south of Montgomery

I noticed that some had signs
and flags.
We were being
officially and enthusiastically
welcomed. I found out that
one group had come from a
dealer in West Virginia. The
one that impressed me the
most was many miles from
town; it looked like about a
dozen kids holding a sign made
from a brown cardboard box on
which was written in block
letters in what looked like
orange crayon the word,
CONGRATULATIONS.
Of the 789 that started the
ride, 709 were at the Farewell
Banquet. One of whom had
suffered a heart attack after
the start, had a stint installed,
and made it to the finish.
Those that made both the
Western Campaign in 2004 and
the Eastern Campaign 2005,
covering all the lower 48,
received a sterling silver posse
star badge and bullet (fair
warning to any werewolves).
We do feel we earned them.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
Kathy Venable
Hello
from
the
ever-grateful
Volunteer
Coordinator. As we come into the home stretch of
the year, it is a very busy one. There are several
volunteer opportunities on the horizon that you may
be interested in lending a hand with.
We have the Heart Ride approaching quickly and
with this year's event covering two (2) days, we still
need several volunteers to help out on either
Saturday, Sunday or both days if you are willing.
We have the San Marcos VIBE event taking
place in October and the Toy Run happening in
November. This is a poker run so I need several
volunteers to help out at the poker stops. To all the
new members who have joined us in the last few
months, this is a terrific opportunity to get involved
and to get to know your fellow members.

Thank-you so much for the
support, flowers, prayers, and
cards I have received during
my illness.
Being a new
member, I never expected
such an outpouring of care and concern from
my HOG chapter and our Dealer. Tom and I
feel like we have found a new family and we
are proud to be a members of Biggs HOG.
Here is an update on my condition. I have
finished radiation and now will wait and see
if the remaining tumor is gone. I am bald;
thank goodness for bandanas. Jan, I want to
thank you for the inspiration and advice. Jim,
we thank you for coming by the hospital.
Tom and I will see everyone at the next
meeting or the next LOH meeting. Until then I
cannot thank everyone enough, you helped
me remain positive during my time of need
and your prayers and thoughts helped more
than you will know. BIGGS members and
Dealer staff are awesome. Until next time,
ride safe and keep the rubber side down.

THE PROFICIENT PASSENGER
Barbara Beauchamp
So You Want to go to Santa Barbara
Our friends, Bill and Terry, are planning a trip to
Santa Barbara in September to celebrate Terry's birthday.
This will be her first long trip on her Buell Blast. She has
been riding for several months now and has around 2,000
miles on her motorcycle. Bill is the proud new owner of
my Buell S3-T.
Since my article this month is on trip planning, I
thought I would use their trip as my guinea pig. I used
Microsoft Streets and Trips; a separate article with screen
shots will be posted on the web for those who want more
details. If you would like a class, contact the Editor.
The first decision to make is whether to take a
coastal route or a mountain route. I decided to do both.
For the coastal route, I started at the LaCosta Park &
Ride; for the mountain route, I started at the I-15 and
SR-76 Park & Ride. I used the city of Santa Barbara as a
destination and let the program calculate a route.
The second decision to make is how you want to
change the route suggested by the program. This is the
time to decide what points of interest you want to see.
Are there any museums or historical sites? Are there any
friends or relatives to visit?

For the coastal route, I opted not to take SR-73 (a
toll road) and to follow SR-1 along the coast north of LA.
I've never ridden along the coast in this part of California;
but having seen it from the air, I thought it would be
interesting.
For the mountain route, I opted to take the Angeles
Crest across and then some additional twisty roads north
of LA. Nelson and I rode the Angeles Crest in rain, sleet,
hail, and snow on a National Buell event; and it was gobs
of fun - it has to be fantastic in nice weather.
The third decision is where to stay in Santa Barbara.
I usually opt for someplace inexpensive, with nearby
restaurants, that I know will be clean.
The fourth decision is fuel stops. We like to stop
about every 100 miles. I set the route options in the
program to identify stops and used the nearby places
feature to select gas stations.
The fifth decision is what maps to print. I like to
print the driving directions with an overview map, current
map views for the motel and gas stops, and current map
views for sections where I might get lost. For long trips,
the strip maps are useful. I find the turn-by-turn maps
helpful on complex routes.
We usually just wing it for where to eat. On a day of
riding, we eat breakfast before we get on the road.
Lunch is usually at the second gas stop. Then dinner is
usually someplace within walking distance of the motel.
Have a great trip!
