> SMB SNAPSHOT Millennium Institute of Sport & Health The Millennium Institute of Sport & Health is the strength and conditioning home for dozens of New Zealand’s elite athletes, including 14 members of its 2008 Olympic team. Along with a pool, track, gyms, playing fields, and more, the private, nonprofit institute boasts a sports-medicine practice, a 60-bed lodge, a science lab, and a conference center. Private sports clubs and thousands of community members, including children, also use these top-notch facilities—and use will only grow when a NZ$43 million expansion opens in late 2011. THE CHALLENGE THE ORGANIZATION WEBSITE: http://mish.org.nz/ WHY SYMANTEC? • Secure backup of 500 GB INDUSTRY: Healthcare • Robust security against drive by malware • Confidence in recovery EMPLOYEES: 100 LOCATION: Auckland, New Zealand THE SOLUTION • Symantec™ Protection Suite Enterprise Edition Symantec™ System Recovery • • Symantec Backup Exec™ 2010 – Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server – Agent for Microsoft SQL Server – Agent for Windows systems THE INFRASTRUCTURE • Symantec Partner: Connect NZ (www.connectnz.co.nz) • IBM BladeCenter S Chassis – SAN inbuilt – Virtualization: VMware • Key Applications: Microsoft Exchange, and Avaya Phone System Information technology underpins many of the Millennium Institute’s activities. Athletes’ progress is logged and analyzed in specialized databases. An Avaya IP phone system, Microsoft Exchange, and a public WiFi network enhance communications for 100 employees and about 10 tenant organizations. The people at the Millennium Institute may be outstanding athletes and trainers, but they’re not always savvy techies according to Kennelly He, the organization’s IT administrator. “They need a lot of help,” he says. “They’re not really computer guys. I’m the sole IT person here, so when the staff has trouble they ring me up.” THE SOLUTION To help keep his phone quiet, He relies on Symantec Protection Suite™ Enterprise Edition to protect 100 endpoints from malware, spam, and other threats; Symantec System Recovery™, for rare occasions when servers (including VMware virtual servers) fail; and Backup Exec™ 2010, with agents for Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, and Windows systems to safeguard almost 500 gigabytes of invaluable data. “Data is very important to us—it’s priceless,” He says. “We can’t afford to lose it.” Symantec products were already deployed at the Millennium Institute when He arrived in 2006, and were upgraded in 2009 as part of an overall technology refresh. The upgraded products, acquired through Symantec partner Connect NZ, have established a firm foundation as the Millennium Institute’s activities and facilities grow. THE RESULT Symantec Protection Suite includes Symantec Messaging Gateway powered by Brightmail™, a product He finds particularly useful. He used to spend up to two hours a day helping users with spam-related issues—both deleting unwanted messages, and recovering legitimate email erroneously flagged as spam. That effort has dropped to zero. “After I installed the Symantec anti-spam software, I haven’t spent any time on it at all,” He says. “I can put my feet up on the table!” He has used Symantec System Recovery just once—to successfully rebuild the Avaya telephone system server—and has been 100% successful recovering lost files using Backup Exec 2010. “Every day we do a full backup to tape,” He says of his system. “We also do monthly backups, triple-week backups, annual backups, and offsite backups, all with Backup Exec.” All told, Symantec solutions—like the Millennium Institute’s athletes—are hardworking and reliable, and Symantec support performs like a champion. “Symantec’s tech engineers are quite patient, and very professional,” he says. “Symantec makes my life easier.” “Symantec’s tech engineers are quite patient, and very professional. Symantec makes my life easier.” Kennelly He IT Administrator Millennium Institute of Sport & Health Copyright © 2011 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved.
