We prefer Bus, since most of them have Wifi on board and are cheaper. 3M it´s your night bus, every 30 minutes, and 601 and 602 it´s your day buses. Stops in Cordoaria and it´s cheaper than metro. For this reason the historic centre, with its medieval tenements, baroque churches and art nouveau shops, was designated a Unesco world heritage site in 1996. TORRE DOS CLÉRIGOS (1) From the Inn, immediate- ly you can find the most known tower of Porto, Torre dos Clérigos, a baroque temple designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nazoni, who now rests inside of the church. This tower has become the symbol of the city, proud and made of stone. One of the first Portuguese movies was filmed here, when two climbers went to the top of the tower to have tea. Thus the movie “Tea in the clouds” was born in the year 1917. SHOPPING St. Catarina street is the main commercial street were you can find all the big store departments. Here you can feel the local crowd, street performers, and food vendors. Tucked in the beginning of the street you can visit Café Majestic (6). Probably the most famous cafe in Porto decorated in an art nouveau style, was the stage of several meetings of the intellectuals in the city’s past. Close by you can also find several good examples of the Portuguese painted tiles in two nearby churches, Capela das Almas (7) and Igreja de Santo Ildefonso. Don’t forget to step inside Porto’s oldest market, Mercado do Bolhão (8), with the traditional vendors offering, fruit, vegetables, meat, herb teas, everything fresh. Struggling to be alive, this market will probably be converted into something trendy. Around it you will find the oldest grocery stores in Porto filled with cheese smoked meats, canned sardines, dried fruits and all the types of chorizo. One of them is Pérola do Bolhão (9) with its front decorated with art nouveau tiles. CASA DA MÚSICA This meteorite looka-like concert hall, designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, landed in Porto in 2001, for the European Cultural Capital events and became a landmark in the music scene, with its beautiful auditoriums. Houses the Porto National Orchestra, but visitors can expect to enjoy also jazz, fado, electronic and dance music. Take some time to visit the top floor restaurant, the skylight is impressive. LIVRARIA LELLO (2) After climbing the tower visit to one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world - Lello & Irmão - opened in the year 1906. The facade is decorated in Art Nouveau, with some features of the Gothic Revival, and inside you can find numerous busts of the greatest Portuguese writers who lived till that time. BAROQUE The infatuation with the baroque style in Porto can still be found in other important stops like the São Bento train station, or the Sé Church (3) and the Church of Santa Clara who should be on your way to cross the most famous bridge of Porto, the D. Luis Bridge (4) , were you can have breathtaking views over the world heritage city. After this stop follow down to the river, to the other side, Gaia, were you can visit the port wine cellars to find out what’s you favourite type of port, or before that just get lost in the narrow streets of the old Ribeira. TIP // Several organized walking tours are made for you to discover Caminhos do Romântico, where you can understand all the contradictions of the Romantic period, between the rural and the bourgeois world, the workers and the royalty. The water is always cold, but the locals will still try the waves on the Atlantic Sea on the hot summer days. The closest beaches are the ones in Foz and Matosinhos. Both of them have several cafés along the coast for cold drinks under the hot sun. Matosinhos beach has been the most popular one for surfers. You can easily rent a surfing board and a suit to try the waves here. But if you wish to spend an entire day sunbathing we recommend the beaches placed more on the south to the city. Some beaches in Gaia and nearby city Espinho. Just catch a train in São Bento Train Station (11) and exit at Granja, Aguda or Miramar, and enjoy the long quiet sandy beaches. Only open during the week, always had a very loyal clientele. Another plate that established itself as one of the most important recipes from Porto is the Francesinha. A very serious relationship between the people of Porto and this plate exists, and always a heated debate happens when announcing ones favourite place to eat it. The most popular place nowadays is Café Santiago (15), but others like Capa Negra, or Cervejaria Galiza can be good places to try this special dish. Another important stop would be Casa Guedes (16), were you will find one of the best roasted pig leg sandwiches , and were you can try several Portuguese delicacies from cheese, to different types of smoked meat, and wine, good cheap wine. To eat fresh grilled fish head up to Matosinhos, were all the restaurants have access to the freshest fish in the city. sweet bytes, it’s time to start going to the heavy stuff: Tascas. Porto has a wide tradition in this old bars, where locals go to a quick snack, which can go from pica-pau (pork fried pieces), torresmos (pork skin) or presunto (a simple ham plate). At Conga (20), you can try bifanas, cooked bits of pork in a spicy sauce, served in bread. Have it with some beer. Next to it you also have the famous Pedro dos Frangos(21), the place for chicken piripiri, or even some more brave choices like chicken rice with blood. To finish this food tour, you can pay a visit to snack bar Gazela* (22). What made this place popular is it’s hot dog, which is toasted, and cutted into little pieces, a perfect snack for a cold bear. You will find lots of people there, grabbing a quick bite before attending a play at the São João* National Theatre (23) The night in Porto changes dramatically at weekends. But during the week you can always find the city students at the cafe Piolho (24), open always till 3am. Another place famous for cheap beer is cafe 77 (25), were a small bear costs only €0.50. But leaving the student crowd, one should try Café Candelabro* (26) or Victoria SIZA VIEIRA Siza Vieira is probably the most famous Portuguese architect and many come to this city to visit some of his work. You could begin to visit the Architecture School* designed by him. The social housing project known has Casas da Bouça or the contemporary art museum Serralves are some of his highlights. In the city of Leça you will find two of his most famous projects. Piscinas das Marés are the public swimming pools, built on the rocks on the beach and filled with the sea’s water, and Casa de Chá, another house built on the rocks, a restaurant and cafe. He recently renewed the main square of the city - Aliados - and in the local metro station São Bento* you can find tiles with his own drawings. PASTELARIAS & TASCAS If you are looking for a quick bite to move on your journey, there are several places that will feed your need of discovering new flavours on the go. Pastries (Pastelarias) in Porto are stunning, as they offer quite a big variety. In almost any street in downtown you will find one were you can find dozens of sweets originated in old convents kitchens. Start at Padaria Ribeiro (17). It’s small but always packed with locals getting in just to pick up bags full of cookies, salty pastries or sweets. Everything is recommended here so choose wisely. Next to it you can find Leitaria do Paço (18), a small café that almost only makes one type of pastry, éclairs. They have perfected the french pastry into dozens of different variations but always maintaining the home made cream that fills them. Confeitaria do Bolhão (19), in an art nouveau decoration, it´s another must to in this journey. If at one point you are tired of (27) for a glass of wine in the beginning of the night. After that, Café aut lait (28) or one of the other popular bars on the Galerias de Paris street are stops before going do the club Plano B* (29). Open till 8am is the most popular place for electronic music. If it’s not your music type, don’t worry, they have another dance floor with alternative sound. Fundamental to make Porto achieve international recognition in the museum scene, Serralves Art Museum* worths a one day visit. Opened in 1999 in order to endow Porto with a space dedicated to contemporary art, the symbolic startdate for the collection was 1968. Everything in this Museum - from the building itself to the furniture - was designed by the renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The local Soho is Rua Miguel Bombarda* (30), that normally held openings at one saturday per month. Museu Soares dos Reis*, founded in 1833, is Portugal’s first national museum, displays one of the finest collections of Portuguese art, in particular a gallery from António Soares dos Reis, the sculptor after whom the museum is named. Check closer O desterrado, a naturalistic sculpture, who many consider a self-portrait predicting his suicide in 1889. MANUEL DE OLIVEIRA Still releasing movies almost every year, making him the oldest director alive, spanneing from the silent era to the digital age, Manuel de Oliveira work is itself the story of contemporary Portugal. Perhaps one of the most famous of his works is Aniki-Bóbó*, a movie from 1932, were we can still see the idyllic life in Porto next to the river. 3. night 4. museums VANDOMA The local flea market where mainly locals and students sell their stock of everything you can imagine.
