Preparing and Displaying the Math Vocabulary Word
Wall–Primary
Before you display the Math Vocabulary Word
Wall–Primary, make copies of this Really Good Stuff®
Activity Guide, cut apart the reproducibles, and file the
pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it
from our Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com. Either
hang the Word Wall Cards on a bulletin board or wall all at
once, or introduce them and add them to your math word
display as you present the individual math skills.
Introducing the Math Vocabulary Word Wall–Primary
If you choose to hang all of the Cards at once, point
them out to students and explain that this is your
classroom math word wall. Explain that each Card has a
word that they will be using in Math and a picture to
show what the word means. Then, as you introduce each
word on the wall, point out the Card, and review its
meaning with students.
If you choose to hang the Cards as you introduce each
Math concept, hold up the Card, and point out the word
on it. Read the word to students, and ask them to
describe the picture. Relate the picture to the definition
of the concept. (For example, for the Card on height,
explain that a giraffe is very tall and that height is the
measurement that shows how tall something is.) As you
hang the Card on the word wall, indicate that whenever
students hear it in class or see it in work they are doing,
they can look at the Card and the picture on it to remind
them what that word means.
Here are some ways to use the Math Vocabulary
Word Wall–Primary:
• Whenever you use one of the concepts in a lesson,
point out its Card and picture on the wall.
• When students have a question about an activity
that relates to a word on the wall, refer them to the
Card to refresh their memory of its definition.
• When you are presenting a homework assignment or
Math project that involves one of the vocabulary on
the wall, point out the Card.

Organizing Your Math Vocabulary Word Wall–Primary
The Math Vocabulary Word Wall–Primary contains words
that relate to different areas of primary mathematics.
As you hang the Cards, you may want to group them in
the following way. If so, make labels on word strips with
the boldface terms.
Measurement: Length, weight, height, volume, yard,
foot, mile, inch
Number Sense and Operations: Add, subtract, sum,
difference, odd, even, less than, greater than, equal,
place value, fraction, ordinal number
Algebra: Pattern
Graphing and Data Analysis: Tally, graph
Geometry: Shape
As you introduce additional math vocabulary, use
cardstock to create new word wall cards by writing the
word and drawing a simple picture or example that
illustrates the word. Hang the card in the appropriate
spot on your math word wall.
Math Vocabulary Reference Cards Reproducible
Copy and distribute the Math Vocabulary Reference
Cards Reproducibles. Create a mini vocabulary reference
book: Have students cut the cards apart, punch holes in
the cards, stack them together, and tie them together
with yarn. To practice the meanings: Hold up the
individual reference cards as flash cards, and ask
students to provide a brief definition for the word.
My Math Dictionary
To help students develop a deeper understanding of
vocabulary by providing their own examples and
definitions of vocabulary words, copy and distribute Math
Dictionary Reproducibles when you introduce a new word
from the Math Word Wall. Have students write their
name at the top of the page and the word they are
defining on the Word line. On a piece of chart paper, model
how to draw or write a picture or example that
illustrates or describes the word. Instruct students to
create their own picture or example on the reproducible. If
students are able to write, have them write their own
definition in the box. Or, write a definition as a class and
tell students to copy the definition into the box. After
you have checked the dictionary sheets for accuracy,
staple them together into a math dictionary for each
student.
