Dear Friends,
I had dinner with a friend and former YWCA Board
Member last summer, a woman in the middle of her
life who had never learned to swim as a child. She
was describing what it’s been like to conquer her fear
of the water as an adult, and then her eyes grew wide
and excited as she related what happened that morning. She summoned the mental and physical strength
she had been developing through nearly a year of weekly lessons. She
faced the fear that had flooded her body for years every time she was
near water that was over her head. And she jumped, for the first time
in her fifty-odd years of living, into the deep end of the pool. As she surfaced, she felt immensely empowered, knowing that she had just done
something she never thought she’d be able to do.
I was deeply moved by her courage, and gratified that she discovered the resources and support at the YWCA Evanston/North Shore
that she needed to take that leap. In all of our programs and services,
from nurturing young women as future leaders to supporting women
and children through domestic violence counseling and intervention;
from reaching out to all children in our community to learn to swim to
encouraging people to face their own fears and prejudices; from giving
low to moderate income women the financial foundation they need to
become independent to helping teenagers recognize and build healthy
relationships, we are a place of support. We provide the resources and
tools needed, both literally and figuratively, to jump into the deep end
and come to the surface stronger, more resilient, and empowered to take
the next step towards healthy, safe and independent futures.
Over the past year, we have faced funding cuts at the same time as we
experienced an increased need for our services and, at times, we have
found ourselves working hard to keep our heads above water. I believe
that we have grown stronger for having gone through this challenge.
Our staff has pulled together; our funders have come through with additional resources; our Board of Directors has been more determined than
ever to build a strong foundation for our organization, and record numbers of people supported the Race Against Hate, attended the YWomen
Leadership Awards and provided swim scholarships for underserved
children in our community.
The worst of times have a way of bringing out the best in people. We
could not do it without you, and we thank you for helping provide the
support that enables us and all of the people we serve to jump into the
deep end and emerge stronger and more empowered.

Twenty years ago, while working for a bank in Lake
County, I was looking for volunteer opportunities.
The local YWCA was looking for board members and
shortly thereafter, I joined its Board. It was, as they
say, the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Since
that time, I have been a member of the World Service
Council of the YWCA, Board Member and Treasurer
of the Great Lakes Alliance of the YWCA and, for the past ten years,
Board Member and devoted supporter of the YWCA Evanston/North
Shore.
As a working woman who came of age during the peak of the women’s
rights movement, I have always been drawn to the YWCA’s history as
the oldest women’s membership movement in the world. Formed in
1855 by Lady Mary Jane Kinnaird and Emma Roberts in London, England, the YWCA was dedicated to the development of young women.
The first YWCA in the United States was started in New York City in
1858, and early YWCAs provided safe haven for young women entering cities from farms. In 1894, the U.S., England, Sweden and Norway
together created the World YWCA, which today is working in over 125
countries.
The YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s rich history informs the programs
and work it pursues daily. Many people are supporters of the YWCA
Evanston/North Shore because of their involvement with a specific
program. While I support the many endeavors of our local YWCA, my
commitment also springs from my belief in the organization’s history
and mission. Every time I watch young swimmers sharing their experiences at the pool, I know they are learning to swim in an inclusive,
non-threatening environment. Every time a women enters the domestic
violence shelter, I know she has entered a safe haven, where she will
have the opportunity to grow and learn. Every time a woman completes
her financial literacy curriculum, I know she has been afforded a chance
to achieve economic independence. And each year, at the YWCA’s
“Race Against Hate,” I see a community come together and surpass the
smallness of its differences.
The YWCA has never been a single event or location for me. The sum
is greater than the parts. The YWCA Evanston/North Shore receives
my support because, simply put, it makes my community, our community, a better place to live.
