ANTI BULLYING WEEK NOVEMBER 12-19th 2012
THE PLEDGE TO END BULLYING will be posted in classrooms.
I BELIEVE THAT EVERYBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN A COMMUNITY WHERE THEY FEEL
SAFE, INCLUDED, VALUED AND ACCEPTED REGARDLESS OF DIFFERENCES.
I PLEDGE TO BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS AND STAND UP AGAINST BULLYING WHENEVER
AND WHEREVER I SEE IT.
This pledge will help raise public consciousness about bullying in schools, at work and at home. With
the support of our caring individuals in school and in the community we can make an impact.
All of CHS’s Middle School Students will sign this Pledge against Bullying and receive a yellow wrist
band to show their support and promise to stand up against bullying. Our School Resource Officer,
Shannon Fedoruk will be speaking to the Middle School along with a Police Cadet to talk about School
Safety and Bullying
Youth for Diversity (YFD)
The Youth for Diversity group at College Churchill High School actively promotes equality, safety and
respect for all students regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion or background. All students from grades 7 - 12 are welcome to join their meetings which are held every Friday in room 7.
YFD members work hard to raise awareness and promote dialogue about important issues that affect
all of our students. They run student support programs that provide a safe place to vent frustrations
and problem solve together as a community.

Fire Drills & Lockdown
A reminder that during the school year, staff and
students will continue to have fire and lockdown
practices to ensure that everyone is aware of the
procedures to follow in the event of an unsafe
situation.
Transportation
For those families who utilize the
school bus, we would like to share
very important phone numbers for
your convenience should you have
any questions or concerns:
Winnipeg School Division Transportation
Department—789-0442
First Student Canada - 586-8880
When inquiring with First Student Canada, please
remember the route number of the bus your child
is on.
If your child cannot take the bus on any particular
day, please call the school before 2:30 p.m., send
a note to the classroom teacher or come to the
office to let the staff know of the change. If there
is no phone call, note or visit to the office, your
child will be placed on the school bus.
The bus cannot wait at the school for any children
who are running late. Please talk to your child
about the
importance of going directly to the
bus area as soon as the dismissal bell rings.
Severe Allergies
While we can not guarantee an allergy-free school
environment, we do make a concerted effort to
assist families of children with severe allergies.
For those with severe food allergies, even the
slightest trace of an allergic food can cause a life
threatening reaction. In our experience, most of
the allergies we see are related to peanuts,
however the list of allergens is growing. Reaction
to peanuts do not occur because someone ate a
peanut product, but
because they unwittingly
touched peanut oil or butter left by someone else.
Please make as many non-peanut choices for
lunch and snacks as possible. This will assist in
ensuring that cross-contamination does not occur.
We will post signs at each classroom door if a
severe allergy is present in the classroom and
teachers will discuss this matter with all students
early on the first day of the new school year. Your
cooperation with this initiative is greatly
appreciated.

Athlete Highlight – Nolan Jackson
As the final gun goes off during the 2nd
Bulldog home game of the season, the players,
coaches and fans cheer victoriously. Their hard
work has paid off and they have taken down the
undefeated Oak Park Raiders in a cold, yet
exciting game.
Once again, #1, Nolan Jackson has had a
huge impact on the game’s outcome. The grade
12 athlete is the Bulldog’s starting Running Back,
Middle Line Backer, Punter and Kicker. He is also
a wedge man on the kick return team and the
back up Quarter Back. Basically the only time that
this team captain is off the field is during punt
return.
Nolan, the 3rd out of 4 sons that have all
played/play Bulldog football, has been with the
program for the past 3 seasons. He began his
career as a Slot back and Corner back for the
Junior Varsity team. Last year he played Quarter
Back for the Varsity team.
This young man’s resume continues to
grow as he was named the MHSAA Athlete of the
Week from their week 1 victory over Sturgeon
Heights where Nolan gained over 280 all purpose
yards and from his week 5 outing versus Oak Park
finishing the day with just over 200 yards rushing
and receiving.
The Football Manitoba Provincial Team
was also a great experience for Nolan as he
played Receiver for the inter-provincial tournament
during the summer of 2010. I have had the
pleasure of teaching this tremendous young
student athlete who has always had a kind heart
and has been friendly and down to earth with everyone he meets. He has been Collège Churchill’s
athlete of the year during his grade 8, 10 and 11
years and as coach Walls said to me “It’s easy to
say great things about a person like Nolan!”
Nolan also has awesome things to say about
Churchill and its football program all the way from
the community in and around the school, to the
incredible alumni support during the games and
their presence off the newly renovated field.
Nolan is also looking forward to his 3rd
season playing for the school hockey team where
he plays defense. He is unsure as to what the
future holds for him although we all know with his
hard work and dedication that the sky is the limit.

Bray’s Nutrition News
Did you notice
that all the pop
machines are
GONE from the school?
WHAT! They took away your favorite drinks!
Who approved this?
I demand some answers!
I mean, come on, is it that bad for us?
Apparently, some “experts” are saying that limiting soda pop
and other high calorie drinks in schools is a good first step in
the battle against child obesity.
Educating (important word) ourselves about what you are drinking is just as important as what you eat although many kids do
not even think about looking at what ingredients go into pop,
energy drinks, and juice, they just drink them! Now may be
they are not available in schools anymore but you can still have
plenty of access to them at every store you enter, eating out at
restaurants and friends houses. So let us just entertain ourselves here for a moment and see what the chatter is all
about…
Soft Drinks Cause Weight Gain in Several Ways
Some nutritionists say that consuming high-fructose corn syrup
causes weight gain by interfering with the body’s natural ability
to suppress hunger feelings. Currently, 64.5 percent of adults
over the age of 20 are overweight, 30.5 percent are obese and
4.7 percent are severely obese. According to research, the reality is that there is epidemiological work done in children as well
as adults that links obesity and Type 2 diabetes with the consumption of sodas.”
Question for you: How Much Sugar is In a Can of Soda?
Is there a lot of sugar in a can of soda? I mean a normal-sized
can you get from the vending machine. And how many calories
in a bottle of soda?
Answer for you: Sodas usually have many calories due to
their high sugar content. A 12-ounce can of cola has 34
grams of sugar and about 140 calories (does not matter if it is
Coca-Cola, Pepsi or any other brand). That is roughly equivalent to eight teaspoons of granulated white sugar.
OK kiddies - you do the math! Yup, that is alot of sugar. WE
LOVE SUGAR!
November 2012
SIMPLER TERMS FOR THOSE WHO DON”T GET IT YET!
Eight teaspoons of sugar sounds like a lot, right? Can you
imagine dumping that much sugar on a bowl of oatmeal?
What about a typical 16-ounce bottle of cola? That has 44
grams sugar, or about 11 teaspoons of sugar. Interestingly, retail cola (the stuff you buy in the can at the store) has more
sugar than the fountain soda you get from fast food restaurants
(they're served with ice, which takes up some space in the cup)
so here is the sugar and calorie content for a cup of cola from a
typical fountain:
12-ounce cup (child size): 23 grams sugar and 95 calories
16-ounce cup (small): 31 grams sugar and 128 calories
21-ounce cup (medium): 44 grams sugar and 180 calories
32-ounce cup (large): 65 grams sugar and 267 calories
The sugar and calorie count for cola is going to be about the
same for any other type of sweetened soda. Plus, there is not
any other
nutritional value, other than water, a little phosphorus and fluoride, in a serving of soda.
NOT MUCH THERE GOOD FOR YOU!
HERE IS SOME COMPARISONS............................
One 12-ounce can of cola has as much sugar as:
Three servings of Frosted Flakes breakfast cereal
One slice of pecan pie
One cup of chocolate ice cream
A 12-oz. can of Pepsi has 150 calories and a 12-oz. can of
Coca-Cola has 140 calories. Pepsi Natural, which is sweetened
with real sugar and kola nut also, has 150 calories, as does
Pepsi Throwback. Coca-Cola Vanilla and Cherry both have 150
calories in a 12-oz. can. Sprite contains 140 calories, and
Mountain Dew, 170 calories per 12-oz. can.
Interesting, a student in my class tells me they are an athlete.
Yet they drink 3-4 cans of pop/energy drinks a day and a 2-litre
on weekends while eating pizza. OK, my advice would be to
educate yourself a little on healthy eating habits and maybe get
some advice from someone who is an athlete to see what they
consume on a regular basis. You are what you eat!!! Being a
true athlete is a lifestyle and not just a few days a week of
pop-free time.
Drinking an occasional can of
soda probably won't hurt, as long
as you keep your daily caloriecount in line, but if you want to
cut back on your soda consumption, try these drinks. They are
not calorie-free, but since they
are made with fresh fruits, they
have vitamins and minerals that
sodas do not have:

Taking the Soft Drinks Out of Schools
In response to such concerns, the nation’s largest beverage
makers -- including Cadbury Schweppes, Coke and Pepsi -agreed in May 2006 to halt nearly all soda sales in public
schools. Beginning in 2009, elementary and middle schools will
sell only water and juice (with no added sweeteners), plus fatfree and low-fat milk. High schools will sell water, juice, sports
drinks and diet soda. Diet sodas use artificial sweeteners,
which add little or no calories, though some, such as aspartame, have been embroiled in controversy for years over their
questionable health benefits and even possible links to cancer.
Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science
