with the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET),
who defines a Continuing Education Unit (CEU) as "...ten contact hours of
participation in an organized continuing education
experience under responsible sponsorship, capable
direction and qualified instruction." The number of
CEUs per learning event is determined and approved
by the CEU Coordinator. If you are interested in having
your learning event considered for CEUs, please submit
the following information:
1) Learning Event information to include:
Coordinator/Instructor, Department/Unit/School/
Division/Agency
2) Learning Event schedule, including dates and times (provide brochures, flyers,

AWARDING CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUs)
AT BENEDICT COLLEGE
Philosophy of Continuing Education Units at Benedict College
Consistent with the College’s mission of teaching, research and service, the
School of Continuing Education is committed to promoting lifelong learning and
quality continuing education for adult learners. Therefore, the School of
Continuing Education at Benedict College provides opportunities for adult
learners who wish to earn CEUs for career advancement, personal and
professional development, and leadership enhancement to earn Continuing
Education Units (CEUs).
Mission Statement
The School of Continuing Education is committed to providing a systemic
process for awarding Continuing Education Units for adult learners with the same
high quality as provided through all academic programs. In offering the CEU, the
School of Continuing Education has seeks to accommodate the increasingly
demanding lifestyles of adult learners, while making provisions for divergent
learning styles. Each authorized learning event is carefully adjudicated as to
ensure that the event evaluates the needs of adult learners through active
facilitator-participant interaction while incorporating the experiences and learning
styles of the participants. Also, the learning event encourages collaborative and
peer learning amongst participants in an enabling academic environment.
Students may earn Continuing Education Units online if the learning event
permits.
Determining CEU Value
One CEU equals ten contact hours of participation in organized continuing
education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and
instruction. The Continuing Education Unit is designed for career advancement
or simply for self-enrichment—to explore knowledge in the arts and humanities,
as well as business and science.
The School of Continuing Education is the caretaker of the CEU at Benedict
College. The CEU Coordinator assumes responsibility for refining and
disseminating information about the CEU. Through its programs, publications,
research, and technical assistance, the CEU coordinator assists the College’s
units and external agencies in appropriate implementation and awarding of the
CEUs. The decision to award the CEU is made by the CEU Coordinator and the
CEU Advisory Council (who are trained in CEU authorized provision) and is
based on a thorough review of the unit’s capabilities in meeting the CEU criteria.
Benedict College is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is committed to being the
best college in its class in the Carolinas.

V. CEU Awarding Policies
1) One CEU equals ten contact hours of participation in organized continuing
education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and
instruction. A Contact Hour is considered 60 minute clock hours of interaction
between learner and instructor/presenter or between learner and materials which
have been prepared to cause learning. The Continuing Education Unit is
designed for career advancement or simply for self-enrichment—to explore
knowledge in the arts and humanities, as well as business and science.
1.a What can be counted as Contact Hours:
¾ classroom or meeting session time led by instructor and/or discussion
leader;
¾ activities, in which a learner is engaged in a planned learning event in
which the learner’s progress is monitored and the learner receives
feedback. (Examples include: but are not limited to, independent study,
computer-assisted instruction, interactive video, web site learning, and
planned projects;
¾ field trips, projects, and assignments which are an integral part of a
learning event; and/or
¾ learner assessment and learner event evaluations.
1.b What can not be counted as Contact Hours:
¾ unplanned activities or projects
¾ unsupervised activities or projects
¾ non-sponsored activities or projects
¾ Academic credit courses
¾ Association membership and leadership activities: Holding membership or
serving in some leadership capacity in an association or society does not
qualify for the CEU.
¾ Committee meetings: Participation in committee meetings and activities do
not qualify for the CEU.
¾ Entertainment and recreation: CEU may not be awarded for attendance
only at cultural performances, entertainment, or recreational activities
unless they are an integral part of a planned learning event, which meets
the CEU criteria.
¾ Individual scholarships: CEU may not be awarded for independent writing
such as articles, books, research reports, or presentation of papers
outside of a planned, directly supervised continuing education/training
experience that fulfills the CEU criteria.
¾ Mass media learning events: Learning events delivered through the mass
media (e.g. television, radio, newspaper) do not qualify for CEU, unless
these presentations are an integral part of a planned learning event which
meets CEU criteria.
¾ Some meetings, conventions, exhibitions: Meetings, conventions, and
exhibitions, which attract large numbers of participants, involve different
activities, and are conducted primarily for information sharing purposes,
generally do not qualify for the CEU. Planned learning activities within
such events, which meet the criteria, are eligible for CEU.
¾ Travel: Travel or participation in a travel-study program does not qualify
for the CEU, unless the educational component of the travel-study
program meets CEU criteria.
¾ Unsupervised study: Individual, self-directed study or other form of
independent learning experience, which is not planned, directed, and
supervised by a provider, does not qualify for CEU.
¾ Work experience: On-the-job training and other work experiences do not
qualify for CEU unless the work experience s structured as part of a
planned and supervised continuing education experience that meets the
criteria. CEU are not to be awarded for life or previous work experience.
¾ Breaks, lunch periods, and periods which are devoted to administrative
tasks, such as student introductions and record keeping, may not be
counted, unless directed as learning situations.
¾ CEU will not be granted for learning events that are less than one hour (60
clock minutes) in length. Sessions within an event may be of any length.
An event of short duration, one or tow hours, often does not warrant the
degree of planning required by the criteria. Caution should be exercised
with shorter length events to ensure their adherence to the criteria.
2) Calculating the CEU
¾ Determine the number of contact hours by adding all countable portions of
the learning event. (Example: A learning event has six 50-minute sessions
with 10 minutes between for set-up. The number of contact hours would
be computed as: 6X50 = 300 total minutes in organized, interactive
learning; therefore 60 = 5 contact hours.
¾ Divide the number of contact hours by 10 to get the number of CEU. (For
the example above: 5/10 =.5 CEU.)
¾ CEU may be expressed in tenths of a CEU (i.e. 17 contact hours equate
to 1.7 CEU; 3 contact hours equate to .3 CEU). Do not express the CEU
past the tenths place (i.e. if your calculation should be 1.78, express this
as 1.8 CEU).
¾ When the contact minutes of the last hour are a fraction of an hour, the
following should be used to calculate the CEU. If the contact minutes are
at least 5/6 (50 minutes or more), the fractional portion should be counted
as a whole hour. Any portion of an hour between 30 and 49 minutes
should be counted as 30 minutes. Any part of an hour less than 30
minutes should be discarded.
3) The learning event and names of participants who meet satisfactory
completion or do not meet satisfactory completion are submitted to the Office of
the Registrar for placement of the official permanent record. One copy of the
CEU award record will be mailed without charge by the Office of the Registrar to
the participant within thirty (30) days of the event. Additional official copies of the
CEU record may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar for a modest fee,
payable in advance. Requestors should allow 5 working days from receipt of
request for processing transcript requests.
4) A record of the Request, Review Analysis, and Program Completers is
retained in the School of Continuing Education.
