FINAL EXAMINATION (2013 – 2014)
CLASS XI
ENGLISH
Time : 3 hrs.
M.M. : 80
General Instructions :
1. There are four sections in this paper. All the questions in each section are compulsory.
2. Attempt all the sections in the correct order. Complete all the questions in one section, before
attempting another.
3. The marks for each question are indicated against it.
4. Strictly adhere to the given word limit. Marks will be deducted for exceeding it.
5. Handwriting should be neat and legible.
SET 2
SECTION – A : READING (20 Marks)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : -
(12)
1.
Several hours talk time, stand by time, Internet connectivity, data transfer,
Bluetooth, PC synchronization, cameras, SMS, MMS, downloadable games…
today’s cell phone manufacturers dangle a vast array of wonderful features, all
calculated to keep you hooked to your handset 24/7. This continuous
connectivity is great, but it may be at a cost that’s much higher than you ever
anticipated.
2.
Dr. Rakesh Jalali, Consultant Radiation Oncologist at the Tata Memorial Hospital
Mumbai, whose area of expertise is brain tumours, says, “There is a Swedish
study which indicates that the chance of getting acoustic neuroma (a benign
tumour that affects hearing and facial muscles) doubles if you use cell phones
for more than ten years.
3.
Lennart Hardell, Professor of Oncology at Orebro University in Sweden, also
found in 2001 that people who used cell phones were two-and-a-half times
more likely to have a temporal brain tumour on the side of the head where they
held their phones. Scientists George Louis Carlo, who was called in by American
mobile-manufacturers refute claims that cell phones cause cancer, claimed to
find, after six years of exhaustive analysis and scrupulous peer review, that
radiation from cell phone’s antenna can cause the formation of micronuclei, red
flags for cancer, in the brain. Children in particular are more susceptible to such
radiation than adults, he says.
4.
If you’ve seen what a buzzing cell phone nearby does to your computer monitor
or TV screen, can you imagine the scrambler effect it can have on your brain?
According to studies by Dr. Ross Adey, from Department of Biochemistry,
(16)
University of California, “cellular phones produce microwaves and proximity of
the phones to the user’s head has raised the possibilities of direct interactions
with brain functions. Modifications in sleep patterns have been reported, and
changes in EEG records have been observed in the left hemisphere of the brain
in the presence of a cell phone field during tone recognition.” A research based
article published in ‘Environmental Health Perspectives’, journal of the US
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, expresses concern that ‘after some
decade of daily use, a whole generation of cell phone users may suffer negative
effects, perhaps as early as middle age.’
5.
In a report in ‘The Lancet’ in 2000, Massachusetts scientist Dr. Kenneth Rotham
said his research indicated that the risk of a car accident was four times greater
when the driver was using the phone or soon after a call; and that heavy mobile
users were involved in twice as many fatal road accidents than light users. In
addition, use of ‘hands-free’ units was apparently no less risky than holding the
telephone to the ear as the concentration of the user was hampered equally in
both cases.
6.
Cellular phone use at petrol pump or anywhere fuel is stored is hazardous. The
switches band high-powered batteries in the phone can generate sparks that
can set off explosions. Most electronic devices in gas station are protected with
explosive containment devices, while cell phones are not. The risk, albeit a low
one, does exist, so when fuelling up, switch off your cell phones, turn off your
ignition and step out of your car till the tank is filled.
1.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage answer the following questions as
briefly as possible. Wherever options are given, choose the correct option and
write down the complete answer. Incomplete answers will not be accepted :(6)
i)
Cell phones are attractive to users because ………………………….
(1)
a)
they are cheaper than landline instruments.
b)
they offer many features like cameras, SMS, MMS, downloadable
games etc.
c)

ii)
Oncologists across the world have cautioned against serious repercussions
of the prolonged use of mobile phones. What are they?
(2)
iii)
Give any two reasons as to why the use of cell phones while driving can be
dangerous.
(2)
iv)
List any three harmful biological effects of microwaves emitted by cell
phones on the human body.
(3)
v)
It is hazardous to use cell phones at petrol pumps because --------------- (1)
a)
the petrol pump attendant might overcharge the driver if he is
distracted by the phone call he is attending.
b)
the phone might be damaged due to the fumes emitted at the petrol
pump.
c)
the high-powered batteries in the phone can generate sparks that
can set off explosions.

below :
(3)
a)
prove false (Paragraph 3)
b)
closeness (Paragraph 4)
c)

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow : -
(8)
Did you know that two Hollywood blockbusters. "Water World" and "Day after
Tomorrow were based on aspects of climate change (with a little dramatic
exaggeration, of course)? They portrayed how reckless industrial activity causes
global warming which in turn has disastrous consequences.
Climate change is very real. Houses have been destroyed by typhoons and freak
storms. Thousands of Europeans died in a heat wave two years ago. Melting ice caps,
dying coral reefs and permanent flooding of several coastal zones are imminent.
People in the Arctic regions have seen unusual birds, and animals in their locality that
are normally only found in warmer climates.
When fossil fuels like oil, coal and natural gas are burnt, the carbon dioxide
generated envelops the earth and traps heat inside the planet's atmosphere just like
a greenhouse traps heat inside itself. Coal-based thermal power plants are the largest
source of carbon dioxide emissions.
Petrol, diesel and natural gas based transport, CFC gases, coolants in air conditioners,
fridges and air freshener sprays also contribute to the greenhouse effect.
Today, scientists warn that if average temperatures of the planet rise by 2 degrees
Celsius terrible things could happen. The ice sheet over Greenland could melt
entirely. The Amazon rain forest ecosystem could get completely destroyed. Tens of
millions of people could be deprived of even the most basic food, millions could have
their homes flooded and many more will face water shortages. Governments of
several industrialised countries have signed the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement to
reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases in the coming years.
Unfortunately the U. S., the biggest emitter, responsible for nearly a quarter of the
world's carbon dioxide emissions (though it has only four percent of the world's
population) has refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol!
Global fossil fuel reserves are diminishing but we need to do something soon.
Governments need to stop giving easy loans and benefits to fossil fuel industries and
start funding technologies that don't cause global warming.
Safer and cleaner sources of energy like windmills, energy from windmills, and
energy from biomass. Wave energy from seashores and of course solar energy is
becoming increasingly popular.
It is up to governments to acknowledge that these are viable profitable sources of
energy, and increase investments in clean energy.
2.1 On the basis of your reading of the above passage make notes on it using
heading and sub headings. Also use recognizable symbols and abbreviations
wherever necessary (Around four-six) Supply a suitable title.

Dona Marina
Bernard Diaz del Castillo (1495-1584) wrote in his True History of the Conquest of
Mexico that the people of Tabasco gave Cortes a woman attendant called Dona
Marina. She was fluent in three local languages, and was able to play a crucial role as
interpreter for Cortes. ‘This was the great beginning of our conquests and without
Dona Marina we could not have understood the language of New Spain and Mexico.’
Diaz thought she was a princess, but the Mexicans called her ‘Malinche’, a word
meaning ‘betrayal’. Malinchista means someone who slavishly copies the costumes
and language of another people.

D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930), British essayist and novelist, writing seventy years after
Dickens, described the change in a village in the coal-belt, change which he had not
experienced, but about which he had heard from older people. ‘Eastwood…must
have been a tiny village at the beginning of the nineteenth century, a small place of
cottages and fragmentary rows of little four-roomed miners’ dwellings, the homes of
the old colliers…But somewhere about 1820 the company must have sunk the first
big shaft…and installed the first machinery of the real industrial colliery…Most of the
little rows of dwellings were pulled down, and dull little shops began to rise along the
Nottingham Road, while on the down-slope…the company erected what is still known
as the New Buildings…little four-room houses looking outward into the grim, blank
street, and the back looking into the desert of the square, shut in like a barracks
enclosure, very strange’.

The president had asked the chief to sign a treaty giving a large part of the land they
lived on to the American government. The Chief replied: ‘How can you buy or sell the
sky, the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us. If you do not own the
freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can one buy them? Every part
of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine-needle, every sandy shore,
every mist in the dark woods, every clearing and every humming insect is holy in the
memory and experience of my people. The sap which courses through the trees
carries the memories of the red man… So, when the Great Chief in Washington sends
word that he wishes to buy our land, he asks much of us. The Great Chief sends word
that he will reserve us a place so that we can live comfortably. He will be our father
and we will be his children. So we will consider your offer to buy our land. But it will
not be easy. For this land is sacred to us. The shining water that moves in the streams
and rivers is not just water but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you land, you
must remember that it is sacred and you must teach your children that it is sacred
and that each ghostly reflection in the clear water of the lakes tells of events and
memories in the life of my people. The water’s murmur is the voice of my father’s
father…’
