All three days are packed with rousing speeches, exciting performances, thought-provoking roundtables, and discussions, exhibits and films. It is truly your chance to meet amazing people from all over the world who are striving to make the world a better place. Hundreds are converging in Atlanta, with unique backgrounds and diverse experiences. But all with the same mindset: we are gathered here because we believe in a global community of compassion and care for one another. We are here because we believe all human beings deserve access to clean water, proper nutrition and health care, safe and healthy living environments, and the right to choose their leaders without reprisal. We believe that collaboration and community are the keys to advancing any important cause that could improve people’s lives in this nation and around the world. This weekend is about being human. It is about transforming our frustrations with the current exclusionary systems into visions for improvement and plans for action. We encourage you to reach out, learn, make new friends, and forge new partnerships. You are to become an essential part of this exciting and historic humanitarian movement. This summit is designed to provide something for everyone — whether you are just starting to explore these humanitarian issues, or are already a seasoned expert. We cannot wait to see you dive into the sessions, soak up the speeches and performances, and roll up your sleeves at a workshop. Meanwhile, make sure you save a little energy for just having fun. Get ready to inspire and be inspired. A better world starts here! Quyyumi, MD, FRCP, FACC Professor, Cardiology Co-Director, Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute 2 recognition Ou r M is s io n The first Global Health and Humanitarian Summit took place April, 2010 at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. The brain child of Neil Shulman, MD, Associate Professor at Emory School of Medicine, the first Summit centered on health, and later expanded to humanitarianism in all segments of our society. The Global Health and Humanitarian Summit brings the local and global humanitarian community together for an educational and inspiring forum, fostering sustainable, world-changing humanitarian action. Dr. Shulman’s vision was to have an event that celebrated and raised awareness of the outstanding accomplishments of ordinary people doing great things here at home and worldwide. The Summit also presented a forum for people to network and share ideas with each other and encourage others to follow in its footsteps. The Summit events were free for all who attended and for those who presented the work of their organizations. Neil envisioned a movement that would be replicated at universities and other institutions across the nation and worldwide. The Summit strives to improve the delivery of humanitarian services, raise awareness of organizations committed to creating a better world and to inspiring the next generation of activists and volunteers. M arlo n Camp be ll singer, actor, writer, director, producer, has nearly two decades of experience in the music industry. It’s a wonder Marlon Campbell is still hungry. He has taken his hefty appetite and crossed over to the big screens with a quest to take Hollywood by storm. Campbell, a native of New Orleans, grew up in the same household as his famous playwright cousin, Tyler Perry, and Campbell’s mother is characterized throughout Perry’s plays. Marlon, aka “Shy,” got his start in the music industry in the late 80’s, along with his trendsetting band Shy Shy & The C.R.I.M.E which garnered world notoriety. In 1989, Campbell tried out his acting chops by playing the character “Dwight” on the NBC After School Special, Crack. Campbell furthered his cross over into acting and made his debut in the live stage play for William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. “I always knew I would end up working in the movie industry and for years it was constantly tugging away at my heart. A little voice in my head kept telling me I had to make a transition from music to film. I knew it was time for me to go ahead and write my first script for theatrical release,” said Campbell. Campbell’s first transition to film was a project to executive produce the reality show titled “Blaque In The House,” which featured R&B artists T-Boz from the group TLC, along with platinum-selling trio BLAQUE. Campbell’s latest project is a new sitcom production entiltled Momma and Me, which stars Bern Nadette Stanis (Thelma of 70s sitcom Good Times). The show promises to deliver a new slant to the traditional family sitcom. The Ma ra f ie Founda tion is a Kuwait-based family foundation that provides humanitarian aid to institutions and organizations around the world.
