All completed applications must be returned to Chair, Soror Anita Wallace. The
$200.00 is a non-refundable deposit.
Debutante Payment Schedule:
December 2010-$200 non-refundable deposit
February 2011-$400 second payment
March 2011-$400 final payment
All payments will be given to Soror Sandra Campbell.
Please note: the required November 1, 2010 deposit of $2,000.00 approved and
loaned to the Debutante Committee by the Sorority, at the September Sorority
meeting, to reserve the Wortham Center, was repaid to the Sorority, in full, on
November 1, 2010. Thank you.

Name of Committee: Emerging Young Leaders (EYL)
Purpose of the Committee: This signature program will impact the lives of 15,000 girls in grades 6th
through 8th through innovative programs by providing leadership skills development, civic engagement,
enhanced academic preparation and character building; thus providing a sound foundation to achieve personal
success.

PROGRAM INITIATIVE I
Alpha Kappa Omega and Houston Independent School District formed a partnership to carry out the Emerging
Young Leaders Program. The chosen school is Attucks Middle School.
Sorors Tamara Cubit, LaDonna Harris, Margie Taylor, Karen Aubrey, and Lucy Bremond met with the
principal, Ms. Pasty Brown, assistant principal, Soror Beverly Dancer and Ms. Joy Darper.
The outcome of this meeting was as follows: The school would choose 90 girls. There would be 30 girls
each from grades 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Discussion of a Kick-off date, meetings at the school, Alpha
Kappa Omega would be given a room at Attucks for activities, meeting, tutoring, etc. and mentors
would be assigned.
Our job is to mentor, tutor; conduct workshops/activities which involve leadership skills development,
civic engagement, enhance study habits, participate in field trips and help them build their character.
An Emerging Young Leaders Committee met and discussed meeting with mentors 10:00 a.m. prior to
November’s Sorority Meeting. An Informational Meeting/Program was set for October 8, 2010.
The Informational Meeting/Program at Attucks Middle School was a huge success. Over 250 girls
attended.
The Principal welcomed our sorors and thanked Alpha Kappa Omega for choosing Attucks. Sorors
Tamara and
LaDonna enlightened the girls about the Emerging Young Leaders Initiative.
The young ladies were given an inspirational A to Z Golden Rules to learn.

Purpose of the Committee: To cultivate the Spirit of Sisterhood with an
emphasis on revitalization, retention and the participation of all members.
Meeting objectives: To be responsible for developing and presenting
sisterly activities to the body and to prepare for our Christmas activities.
Many suggestions were made by sorors present and the committee decided
to celebrate our 82nd Anniversary during the December 18th meeting.
We are also asking each soror to participate in our pink or green
Christmas tree ornament gift exchange by bringing an ornament to
exchange with another soror.
After comments from Soror Tamara, the meeting was adjourned.
Next meeting: December 6:30 p.m. at the Power Center
All committee members are asked to come out and help us prepare for our
activities to close the year.

ELECTION GUIDELINES
2010 CHAPTER OFFICERS
November 20, 2010
1. Only sorors who have active membership status as defined in Article VIII, Section 2, (p.19) of the
By-Laws of Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter, Revised January 2010, are eligible to vote. Article
VIII, Section 2, (p. 19) states: An active member is a soror who meets all financial obligations for
the current year of both Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter and the international body. Every active
member is a member of the international body.
2. A plurality vote shall be required for on all business matters, including the election of officers.
Only the vote of sorors present at the meeting shall be counted. (Article XI, Section 2, (p.25))
3. Voting for candidates for office shall be by single secret ballot. (Article XI, Section 3, (p.25))
4.
All candidates for the office of Basileus and Anti-Basileus must have been financial with Alpha
Kappa Omega Chapter for a period of at least four (4) consecutive years immediately
preceding election and shall have attended one of the last two Boules or one of the last two
Regional Conferences. (Article IV, Section 4, (p.6))
5. All other candidates for office must have been financial with Alpha Kappa Omega for a
minimum of two (2) consecutive years prior to January 1 of the year in which the term of office
shall begin. (Article IV, Section 5, (p.6-7))
6. All candidates for the office of Graduate Advisor to the undergraduate chapter, immediately
prior to her election, must be a graduate soror and shall have been a member of the graduate
chapter, Alpha Kappa Omega, for two consecutive years, must have attended one of the last two
Boules or one of the last two Regional Conferences and must be certified by the Directorate
approved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Graduate Advisor Certification Program within one
year of placement in office.
7. Candidates on the ballot may produce a promotional campaign document that describes the
candidate’s qualifications and experience in the sorority. This one-piece document can be in the
form of a foldout, flyer, vitae, letter, etc. No additional flyers, handouts, etc., may be used. No
Electronic campaigning or distribution of campaign material is allowed. No Email is allowed.
8. Campaign speech must not exceed two minutes. No PowerPoint presentations or music will be
allowed. Only verbal presentations are permitted.
9. All nominees from the floor must provide the required credentials (proof of attendance at one of
the last two Boules or of one of the last two Regional Conferences) if it is a requirement of the
office the candidate is seeking.
10. After the Nominating Committee has presented its report, the chair must call for nominations
from the floor before voting takes place.

The Gamma Psi Chapter and I appreciate your support Alpha Kappa Omega
sorors, and that of the ΓΨ Alumni, whom both played a critical role in the success
of 60 th Anniversary Celebration. Over 284 sorors attended the weekend activities
planned by Gamma Psi Chapter and AKΩ steering committee. The luncheon was
attended by Charter Members, Soror Clarice Lowe, Evelyn B. Thornton and
Mercedes Terry. We were graced with the beauty of our 18 th Supreme Basileus,
Soror Mattelia B. Grays, 21 st Supreme Basileus, Soror Faye B. Bryant and 20 th
SCRD, Soror Polly Sparks Turner. A special thanks to Soror Staci Taylor
Fullmighter, Quiana Smith, Erika Edmond and Chantay Morris for their hard
work and dedication to ensure the success of the 60 th Anniversary.

Hello Sorors,
Omicron Gamma Chapter held its 2nd two (2) week MIP
that started on October 24th and concluded on November
7th. I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Soror
Gwendolyn J. Brinkley for her leadership and support
during the preparation of the 2010 Fall MIP. The four
candidates had the pleasure of meeting Soror Mattelia B.
Grays which was a pleasure and honor for the newly
initiated sorors…thank you again.
The ceremonial luncheon theme was “Cultivating Bonds &
Creating Legacies” and a special thanks to the sorors that
chartered Omicron Gamma (Sorors Charlotte Bryant,
Dorothy Booker, Vivian Harrison, and Polly Sparks
Turner) that delivered the keynote speeches that paved the
future for the four newly initiates in AKA. A special
thanks to Soror Tamara Cubit for her unwavering support
during the MIP sessions and her words of expressions at
the ceremonial luncheon.
A sisterly thanks to the Graduate Advisor Council
members “Fabulous Nine” Sorors Lillian Bourgeois,
Sandra Campbell, Karen Grays, Helen Houston, Faye
Phillips, Patricia Roberts, Marianne Walker,
Yavaunda White and Angela Williams that ADDED
VALUE to the Fall 2010 MIP. It could not have been a
success without their participation and support.

hosted an American Diabetes Seminar on campus for the

in the Breast Cancer walk at Sam Houston Park.

School – Soror Crystal Edmond joined Alpha Kappa Omega and
Gamma Psi members
11/02 Global Poverty – Platform III - Omicron Gamma
donated $500 to the Heifer Foundation – Sorors purchased a
llama ($150), goat ($120), pigs ($120), trees ($60), honey bees
($30), and a flock of chicks ($20) to support the initiative to end
hunger, preserve the environment and empower women gobally.
CAMPUS EVENT
10/16 – “CanFest” – chapter members donated can goods with
other campus organizations that partnered with Move for
Hunger
10/22 – House of Tiny Treasures – chapter members donated
over 100 ounces of candy to foster children.
10/25 thru 10/28 UHD – “Greek Week” – Chapter members
participated in the university’s mandatory “Greek Week”
activities during MIP sessions.
