www.ToolTrainer.com PREPOP POWER PROFITS “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” Jonathan van Clute – www.ToolTrainer.com What’s a prepop? Prepop stands for “pre‐populate”. It is a feature of most CPA network systems that is usually used by email marketers so that they can send each person on their list a special link, that when visited causes the person’s email address (or whatever other data the marketer has on the visitor) to be entered into the page’s form automatically. This way the person only has to click the “submit” button on the offer, thereby making it much more likely that the marketer will get the lead. The less work your prospect has to do, the better your chances at conversion, right? So why do only email marketers use it? Well the simple reason is because they have the data. If you’re a PPC marketer for example, you know nothing about your visitor until they fill out some information. If you send them right to your offer page, you can’t possibly fill in for example their email address, because you have no way to know what it is. Ahh but what if they told you their email address first? That my friend, is where prepop comes in. The simplest way to use them is with email or zip submits, so that’s the example I’m going to use here. www.ToolTrainer.com The basic outline works like this: 1. Visitor sees your ad and clicks it. 2. Visitor is taken to your landing page where you offer them the chance to get something (for free is always good), if they submit their email address. 3. Visitor is then redirected to your offer, with their email address already filled in for them. 4. Visitor clicks the “submit” or “continue” or whatever button, and you get paid. That’s it in a nutshell. Now of course there are nuances and details to this that you must know, in order for it to work correctly. But that’s why you have this report… I’m going to spell it all out for you so you can implement it immediately. Prepop is an outrageously powerful way to build lists and even get paid for it. You can capture the email addresses for your own use later, but be absolutely certain you adhere to all laws regarding email marketing! Email marketing can get you in hot legal water if not done correctly, so be smart! Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved Does network ___________ support prepop? The short answer to this is another question: Does the network have email marketers? If they do then the answer is almost surely “yes”! This capability is such a staple of email marketing that any network with a large email marketer base is almost sure to support it. But to get specific… absolutely any CPA network that uses the Direct Track (affiliate.com, COPEAC, RevenueLoop, etc.) or Link Trust (GetAds, XY7 Elite, etc.) platforms have support for prepop already in place. Networks that use other platforms or custom solutions (Hydra, NeverBlue, CX Digital, etc.) will require you to ask them about it. Not all affiliate managers will know what you’re talking about so be persistent until you get someone who understands precisely what you want. Loyalty has its place, but never be too loyal to your networks. If they don’t support prepop, go sign up at one that does! When asking for prepop codes, just tell them that you want to be able to send people a link that already has their email address in it, so that the offer is filled out when they click the link, and what is the code required to do that? Even though it may not be exactly what you’re doing, it’s the simplest way to ensure they get you what you need. The key point here is that there are special codes that you will have to add to your links, and those codes are potentially different for each network, and even for different advertisers in the same network. These codes are typically referred to as subids (sub‐IDs) and you’ve surely seen them before… they look like this: www.ToolTrainer.com ?aff=1726534&pid=6358&o=abcxyz&k=iwjfgho Each one of those little IDs – in this example “aff”, “pid”, “o”, and “k” – are passing instructions to the page whose link they are attached to. So what we want to do is get the visitor’s email address, and then append it into the appropriate code, so that it will automatically fill in the offer for them. Then they just have to click a button and we get paid. Ka‐Ching! So what are the codes for each network? Unfortunately I can’t tell you because as I mentioned, they are different for each network and even sometimes for different advertisers on the same network. So you’ll have to ask your rep at the network(s) you use (and if you haven’t already, absolutely positively get to know your reps!! This is CRUCIAL to getting anywhere in this business…) and if they don’t already know the codes you need, a good rep will find them for you quickly. But for argument’s sake, one code that I have used in the past is “em” so let’s run with that for now. It’s time to get down & dirty with prepop! Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved Passing data from your page to the offer When using prepops, obviously everything hinges on your ability to grab the data on your page first, and then send it to the next page. But how do you do that? Don’t you need to be able to control the offer page itself? Wouldn’t it need to be hosted on your own domain? This is where the magic codes I mentioned come in. They give you a direct method for submitting data directly to the page, without having to have any direct control over the page. Think of them as a kind of “back door” into the offer page. I find email submits are the fastest & easiest ways to make money with prepops, especially “free” offers because that is such a powerful word in getting people to take action. For example, did you pay for this report? ;) Here is an example link you might find in one of your networks (this particular offer link was taken from GetAds): http://tracking.gajmp.com/redir.aspx?CID=16924&AFID=31244&DID=72177 So this link will take you to some offer… as of this writing it’s a free 3g iPhone offer. But notice that the email box is blank? Let’s change that with one small addition: http://tracking.gajmp.com/redir.aspx?CID=16924&AFID=31244&DID=72177&em=test@test.com www.ToolTrainer.com Notice anything different? ;) Of course you did… the email address is already in the box! All the person has to do now is hit “continue” and whammo – I get paid. OK so the missing piece here is, how do I actually capture the email address, and then somehow append it to my affiliate link with the proper code? Well at the end of the day that’s why you got this report, and I certainly won’t disappoint you. Let’s talk landing pages! A lot of marketers go to great lengths to build extremely fancy landing pages with really slick graphics, flash animations, video, live actors walking onto the screen, etc. etc. etc. But the simple fact is, simple works! I’m going to actually show you the exact landing page I stol – er, copied – for my personal campaigns. Ready? Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved Some of you may recognize this domain, or at least the format. It’s marketer Eben Pagan’s site, and this style of landing page is his signature. I figured, if it was good enough for him… it’s good enough for me. So I tried it out. Almost overnight I began collecting over 1,000 email addresses PER DAY! On ONE campaign! Between both of my test campaigns I had days where I collected over 4,000 optins… yes, in ONE DAY. Believe me, this landing page gets optins. But why? I can’t claim to see inside my prospect’s heads, but I have my theories. The primary one is that most of the CPA offer landing pages are trying too hard. They are SELLING when your visitor hasn’t even been warmed up yet. It’s like walking into a car dealership and having the salesperson immediately start talking about you driving out in that shiny new vehicle you can’t afford. It’s too much too soon! www.ToolTrainer.com The old adage “Keep It Simple Stupid” applies in a huge way to your landing pages. The important thing is to get them to take an action – ANY action – that you tell them to take. But look at Eben’s page by contrast. First thing to notice – NO GRAPHICS! None. Not a logo, not even any color except for the headline. This page does not scream “selling” it screams “information”, and it’s not as intimidating. Plus of course it uses the “f word” and offers something for FREE. Not only that, but it’s “Free Instant Access”… even better! We just want them to take that first step towards our desired outcome. This is known as Compliance Momentum and surprisingly, seems to be a concept discussed almost exclusively with regard to dating (fellow PPC Formula member and all‐around great guy Raj first turned me on to this idea – thanks bud!). We can see the visitor landing on our page as a “first date” and it is vital that we get them to begin following our lead from the start. The basic idea is that if they follow our first simple instruction, they will be more likely to follow the next one, and complete the offer’s first page. I’ve actually been told by advertisers that I’m the only one allowed to run their offer because of the quality of my leads – and I’m convinced this process is a huge part of the reason why. Now of course we have to adapt this to our uses… for example we aren’t giving someone something for free, but we are giving them the OPPORTUNITY to get something for free, aren’t we? This is an important distinction – DO NOT CLAIM TO BE OFFERING SOMETHING IF YOU AREN’T! So here is an example of how I might change the copy to promote a free iPhone offer: Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved “Act Now For Your Chance to Get a FREE iPhone 3g – Even Choose Your Color!” Just follow these six simple steps for the chance to receive your brand new 3g iPhone totally free of charge! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Enter your valid email address. Click submit. Click “continue” on the next page, if still available. Fill out your valid shipping information so we know where to send your new iPhone. Complete the offer participation requirements. Enjoy your new 3g iPhone! E‐Mail: Free Instant Access! Make sure you use your valid email address or you won’t qualify for this special offer. Please read and abide by all terms and conditions on the following page, and allow it a few seconds to load. www.ToolTrainer.com So as you can see, I’ve made a number of offer‐specific changes, and I’ve dropped the first name requirement. Testing has shown that optin rates often increase when not asking for a name. You should do your own testing, perhaps split test two versions of the landing page and see which gets more optins, before you decide for certain. Now notice my choice of language… I’m not offering anything for free. I’m offering the CHANCE to get something for free… and I say in step 5 that they must complete the offer participation requirements. There is a grey area I’m treading in, which is that I’m not showing the actual offer “fine print”. It shouldn’t legally be required since it’s on the next page anyway, but… it’s possible that some advertisers might take issue with this landing page because of that. Whatever you do – never stop testing. Split test everything you possibly can, as small improvements can equal BIG $$$!! OK so that’s your landing page copy… great. But we still haven’t talked about how exactly to capture the visitor’s email address and pass it along the affiliate link to the offer page. Right you are! So let’s get to it shall we? Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved Building your opt‐in form & redirecting I’m going to make this as simple as possible and just hand you some code to use. Then I’ll explain what it does and how, for those who want to know that stuff (and I strongly urge everyone to want to know how this stuff works!! It will make you a FAR superior online marketer…) 1. <?php 2. 3. $afflink = 'http://tracking.gajmp.com/redir.aspx?CID=16924&AFID=31244&DID=72177'; 4. 5. if(!$_GET['em']) 6. {?> 7. <form action=’’ method='GET'> 8. <table> 9. <tr><td align='right'><b>Email</b></td><td><input type='text' name='em' value=''></td></tr> 10. <tr><td align='center' colspan=2><input id='Submit' type='submit' value=’Submit' name='Submit' /></td></tr> 11. </table> 12. </form> 13. <?}else{?> 14. <html> 15. <head> 16. <title>Page Loading…</title> 17. <meta http-equiv='refresh' content='0;url=<? echo $afflink; ?>&em=<? echo urlencode($_GET['em']); ?>'> 18. </head> 19. <?}?> www.ToolTrainer.com IMPORTANT NOTE! Whatever you do – DO NOT COPY AND PASTE THE ABOVE CODE AND START USING IT!! Since this document is being created in MS Word, many bad things could potentially have happened to the code, even if it looks fine. For a nice clean version of this code, you can grab it here or see it in action here. BTW If you don’t have a good text editor yet, GET ONE. Try EditPad Pro, it’s what I use most of the time. “Wait – nobody said I had to read code!” So what the heck does all that do? I’m so glad you asked! I’ve numbered the lines, so I can break it down easily: Get used to it, code is the fabric of the web. If you’re reading someone’s code and you don’t know what something does or means – Google it! 99% of what I know about HTML and PHP was learned through Google. Seriously. 1. All PHP code must open with a tag like either <? or <?php. This just means “start processing PHP from this point on.” 3. This is your basic affiliate link. Please note that passing additional subid information like keywords & such is beyond the scope of this report, but absolutely can be done… this is where you would put your complete link, all subids included (except for the prepop id, leave that out). Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved www.ToolTrainer.com 5. Now we enter the heart of the beast. This means “If the subid ‘em’ is NOT present, do something…” 6. This drops us out of PHP mode and back into HTML mode temporarily. Just a personal coding style preference. 7. Here we start our actual form, specifying the ‘GET’ mode, which means we are going to submit our form information in the URL itself. Note that since I have not defined a specific page to submit this information to, it is going to submit it back onto this same page. 8. We start our table to layout the form. 9. First row and two cells of our table, it’s the label ‘Email’ and the actual entry box they will fill out. 10. Second and last row and cell of this form, it’s just the submit button. You can change value=’Submit’ to say anything you want, it’s the text that will appear in the button. 11. Now we close up our table. 12. Now we end our form. 13. Here’s where things get interesting… we are going to continue the PHP code we started at the top, by specifying what happens if the page DOES detect ‘em’ in the URL. The only way that should happen, is if the user just submitted something… so we know it’s time to send them somewhere. 14. Start an HTML page. 15. Start the <head> section of the page. 16. Give the page a title… optional but I like it. 17. Redirect the visitor to our affiliate link, appending whatever they put in the form as &em=whatever so that the form will be pre‐populated with their information. 18. End the head section of our page. 19. Close up and exit PHP code mode. That’s all folks! Honest! Try it for yourself and see. Of course you’ll need to change “em” to whatever the prepop code is for your offer, but otherwise you can use this code as‐is. Enjoy! Now clearly this is a VERY simple example, but you can adapt the code to your own pages and get as fancy as you want. In fact I’ll mention a few advanced things you can do to expand on this concept in the final section of this report. For now… try to follow the logic I’ve outlined above so that you really understand what it’s doing. Don’t be afraid of code… it’s not hard to understand… really, I swear! If by some chance you don’t already have an autoresponder, I highly suggest you get one right away. We’ve all heard “the money is in the list” and while that’s not the *only* place money hides, it’s a good place to look! Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved So where did their email go? If you’ve been really paying attention… you may be saying to yourself, “Self, this doesn’t look to me like it’s capturing any emails anywhere. Where are they going?” Since I don’t know what your self would say in response, I can tell you what *I* would say. I would say – “Why are you talking to yourself?” And then I’d say, “You’re absolutely right!” The above example is a way to use prepop to begin compliance momentum and increase conversions, but it does not actually store the email address anywhere. For that, you need some sort of lead capture system. Assuming you’re not advanced enough to have built your own (which is way, way beyond the scope of this report), you should probably look into some sort of autoresponder system such as aweber. Specific details of how to pass the information to the autoresponder and then on to the offer, will vary for every system so I really can’t get into them all here. But the basic idea is: 1. Visitor lands on your squeeze page and submits their email address. 2. The form would actually be the HTML form provided by your autoresponder system – note that you cannot use a javascript code to render the form, it must be the plain HTML code. 3. The form’s “thank you” page, would be your affiliate URL. 4. You must enable the feature that will pass the submitted form data to the thank you page. This is what will append our em= (or whatever your code is) to the offer page. If for any reason your autoresponder does not support the ability to automatically append the captured data to the thank you page, then this entire method will not work with that system. Aweber can do this, as can most other systems that I’m aware of. www.ToolTrainer.com Now you will be capturing the person into your own system, can send them followup emails, etc. but you are also instantly monetizing your front end by sending them to an offer with their email address already in place. All they have to do is click continue. This is how I was able to actually earn an average net profit of over $0.30 from each and every person who opted in to my squeeze page. Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved Bottom line: What’s really in it for you? OK this is all interesting but what kinds of numbers are we really talking about here? Will this really increase your profits? Obviously I can’t guarantee anything, but I can share with you my numbers (and I have still barely begun to roll this out on a large scale myself… which is really stupid when I think about it!) One of my first test campaigns using this method was started at the beginning of December 2008 (it was not a seasonal offer either and I still run this campaign, though as often happens in this business my margins have decreased sharply over time). On 12/15/2008 I had these stats: Number of page visitors: 61,553 Number of initial optins: 1792 (2.9%) Number of lead conversions: 827 (46%) So as you can see I was able to convert nearly half of those who saw my offer, into leads. Plus I added 100% of the people who saw my offer to a mailing list. After all was said & done on this day the traffic cost me about $630 and returned me just shy of $1,200, and added almost 2,000 people to this mailing list. And this is just one day of many!! www.ToolTrainer.com If done correctly, prepop is almost as good as being able to replace the landing pages designed by the advertiser. Advertisers often think that they need to sell sell sell, when in reality they need to PRE sell, and that’s where you come in. If you can pre sell them, gain their trust, etc… then prepop the offer, your chances of a conversion are extremely high. Also don’t forget that you don’t have to send them straight to the offer. If you’re willing to give up the front end instant gratification profit, you could instead offer to send them something for opting in – a free report, coupon, whatever, and then once you establish additional credibility and trust you may be able to convert them on a much higher offer. If your offer paid out say $30 instead of $1.30 and you converted just 1/10 as many people as before, you could still make 2 to 3 times as much money! Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved Beyond Prepop: To infinity & beyond! Now that you have a basic grasp of prepop and how you can use it to increase your conversions, let’s talk about a very obvious component that I seem to have left out completely – we’re not keeping all those email addresses!! Before I go any further with this… I urge you to be careful in acquiring email addresses with the intent of later mailing these people. Email marketing is one area of online marketing that is heavily policed and even legally regulated, with fines and other nasty consequences if you stray too far over the semi‐ invisible line. In fact, I myself was terminated quite suddenly by my lead management system due to too many spam complaints (for full details see this blog post all about what happened). Thank goodness I didn’t have my entire business running through this system as it could have been disastrous. www.ToolTrainer.com If you’re going to be emailing people, make sure they’re expecting what you send them. If you give them one impression and send them information that is unrelated, you can expect extremely high spam complaint rates. I strongly suggest you study everything you can about “permission marketing” before you mail your newly acquired lists… in particular make sure that on your landing page you make it EXTREMELY CLEAR that people are in fact opting in to your mailing list, and what they can expect from you as far as contact. Don’t make the common mistake of thinking “hey they opted in, I own them and can do whatever I want with them now!” If you think this, I promise you that you will lose your autoresponder account pretty fast. One other critical consideration is whether to go with single or double optin. Of course most big marketers TRUST ME ON THIS! ;) will tell you to go with double optin, but the simple fact is that you will get much MUCH lower signup rates to your list if you do. But with single optin, people literally forget 2 minutes later that they ever signed up for your list, and will flag you as spam immediately. So test this for yourself and see which you feel more comfortable with. If you go single though, make sure you establish real value for your list, and you deliver what they expected. Now let’s talk about what to do with this data once you get it. I can’t go into exhaustive detail in this report, but for the more advanced among you, this should give you some ideas well worth exploring. 1. Obviously – submit the lead to your own lead capture system (for example aweber) and then pass the data to your “thank you page” which is in reality your affiliate link. Make sure you turn on the extra data so that the em= (or whatever) code gets submitted to the offer page. Doing this allowed me to actually earn an average of over $0.30 PROFIT PER EMAIL that I acquired. I didn’t pay for these lists, they paid me up front. Prepop Power Profits “How I Built a List of Over 60,000 Optins in Less than 6 Weeks, and Earned $64,821.60 in CPA Commissions Doing It!” ©2009 by Jonathan van Clute – ToolTrainer.com – All Rights Reserved www.ToolTrainer.com 2. Do some data validation to ensure they enter at least a properly formatted email address. 3. Frame your offer page so that once they leave the page, you can initiate an exit pop that is also prepopped, with another offer. Some percentage of visitors will hit the “continue” button on that offer as well and give you yet another lead from the same visit. 4. Add countdown timers to increase urgency – OfferWarnings has some great ones. 5. Use an exit detector/blocker to pop up a last‐ditch offer if they go to leave the page. 6. Contact your affiliate network and ask if you can “whitelabel” the offer. This is a step further than prepopping because you can actually host the entire form on your own page, and submit right to their system… this allows YOUR page to be the offer page, rather than your page redirecting *to* the offer page. Most affiliates never really 7. Incorporate a rotator into the process “make it.” If you do only what so that you can test different related offers and see which converts the best. they’ve done, you’ll get what It’s not always what logic would they got. Be sure to blaze suggest! your own trail at times… try 8. Use “hidden” form values so that you things that seem crazy, or can pass lots more information in the subid to the CPA network – track the that people say “can’t be keyword, the campaign, adgroup, done.” Off the beaten path is landing page, even pass a timestamp where the most fertile ground or the email address itself to the is found! network and track the exact email address that was responsible for each lead conversion. 9. Use a Geo‐IP solution to see where you get the best conversions and consider targeting that geo region in specific. You’ll probably get cheaper traffic and hence, more profit. 10. I don’t dare say too much here, but there are nearly endless “Black Hat” possibilities here, ranging from flat‐out fraud, to simply “aggressive” tactics to acquire more leads. Hunt around in the blackhat blogs & forums and I’m sure you’ll find some of these ideas. 11. Try higher paying, longer form offers that still allow prepop. You will need to be comfortable with passing multiple values from your form to the offer page, but you may be able to create a more trustworthy and inviting form for, say, a scholarship offer… and simply have them click “continue” on the next page where all their information is already filled in. 12. Suggest to the visitor that the following page is to allow them to “confirm” that their information is correct and if it is, to press continue. Especially with longer form offers this could work well. That should be plenty to get your mind racing. Above all, test everything… even the seemingly craziest idea that you’re sure will never work, could yield amazing profits. Now get prepopping!!
