Turning local actions
into lasting impacts
Through hundreds of local donations and sponsorships, in-store
fundraising initiatives and volunteer efforts, Safeway stores
support the neighbourhoods we proudly serve.
As the largest single contributor to food banks in Western Canada, we
believe that no person should go hungry. Together with our customers,
employees and supplier partners we donate approximately $10 million
in food and financial support each year to local food banks. Regularly
scheduled pick-ups are done in local communities right across the west and
throughout the year we participate in food bank drives and awareness
campaigns. Customers can walk the aisle of a Safeway store and learn
about dozens of “most needed” items for the food banks – items which
can be placed in a hamper bin at their local Safeway alongside $5 or $10
most needed care packages.

To us, buying local is a tradition. Just like you, we believe buying local produce
ensures products are as fresh as possible when they reach your table. For decades
we have worked with hundreds of local growers to bring the finest fruits and
vegetables to you and your family when possible. Buying local reduces greenhouse
gas emissions associated with transportation, supports the vitality of regional
farms and strengthens the economies in the communities where we live and
work. Safeway is also proud to be one of the largest manufacturers and processors
of farm fresh Canadian products in Western Canada. And we are committed to

supporting Canadian vendors and manufacturers when sourcing the products
on our shelves or the ingredients in our Safeway branded products. Together
with provincial governments and food processing associations, Safeway is proud
to participate in public awareness campaigns in BC, Alberta and Manitoba. The
year-round campaigns help customers identify products produced in their local

plastic bags… recycle
them at Safeway.
Give new life to any plastic bags from your household and
recycle them at Safeway. For over 25 years, we’ve provided a convenient location for our customers to divert plastic
bags from local landfills. Today when you return your plastic
bags at Safeway, they will be converted into composite
plastic board for deck and fencing through Trex Company.
