Ascites Management p e r i t o n e a l C at h e t e r Ascites Shunts innovative compassionate home management o f re c u r re n t ascites Are you tired of repeat paracentesis ? Are your patients? there are options... Two choices for home management of ascites: • Peritoneal Catheter indwelling catheter for the removal of malignant ascites • Ascites Shunts peritoneo-venous shunts for the retention of nutrients that are better for you and your patient. • F ewer procedures and hospital visits required for ascites management. • P atients can spend more time at home and less time in waiting rooms. • T imely control over symptoms. • P atients experience smaller volume shifts through intermittent or continuous ascites drainage. p e r i t o n e a l C at h e t e r PerItoneal catheter An easy to use and effective choice for the home management of recurrent malignant ascites “[The Pleurx Catheter] enables patients to eliminate repeated visits to the hospital and the pain and anxiety of repeated abdominal taps.”1 Pleurx Benefits • Simple placement procedure • Effective palliation of symptoms • Eliminates hospital visits for repeat paracentesis • Reduces risk of fluid overload • Improves quality of life “Patients treated with the Pleurx catheter... report satisfaction with ease of drainage, lack of procedural pain, and ability to frequently drain the ascites ….”2 1. The primary component is a unique evacuated plastic bottle with drainage line. The access tip on the drainage line opens the safety valve on the peritoneal catheter. Once the clamp on the drainage bottle is released, fluid is withdrawn from the peritoneal cavity into the bottle. Detailed instructions, a nursing guide, and a patient training video aid in training patients and caregivers. After training, patients and caregivers readily adapt to draining at home. Polyester cuff promotes tissue ingrowth to reduce infection risk and hold the catheter securely in place Safety valve prevents inadvertent passage of air or fluid through the catheter 15.5 Fr. Silicone catheter is soft and flexible, conforms to the peritoneal space and minimizes insertion site discomfort Fenestrated length, 24 cm large, smooth fenestrations with beveled edges promote drainage and avoid plugging * U.S. Patent No. 5,484,401 Ascites Shunts Choose from several valve, catheter and placement combinations to meet individual patient needs. Valve Options • D ouble-valve shunts help prevent venous reflux when pumping. • Single-valve shunts offer less resistance for patients with more viscous ascitic fluid. Miter valves allow spontaneous and unidirectional flow of ascitic fluid when patient is supine. Compressible pump chamber helps avoid occlusion and provides a means to determine patency. Radiopaque striped catheters enable visualization under flouroscopy.
