Weathering the
storm – 75 years ago
Just weeks before the
December 1937 release of
“Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs” made motionpicture history, Walt Disney
gave audiences a taste of
the latest in animation
techniques with the Nov. 5
release of the groundbreaking
short “The Old Mill.”
The 68th release in the
Silly Symphonies series marked the first use of Disney's
multiplane camera, which gave animators the ability
to create new depth and dimension in animation. In
less than nine minutes, “The Old Mill” tells the story
of an approaching storm and how birds, mice and
other creatures seek shelter in an abandoned mill. The
cartoon incorporates realistic depictions of animal
behavior, rain and wind, ripples and reflections, and
three-dimensional rotation of detailed objects.
Directed by Wilfred Jackson, scored by Leigh
Harline and produced by Walt Disney, “The
Old Mill” won Academy Awards for Best Short
and in the scientific and technical category.
Park tributes
Passengers on the Storybook Land Canal Boats might
notice three miniature mills on their journey, while
“World of Color” also pays tribute to the short. And at
Disneyland Paris, hungry Guests can saunter up to The
Old Mill snack stand, which is an actual windmill.
On Oct. 17, Mickey Mouse and pals unveiled a three-story castle made
of 45,000 pounds of ice in New York City’s Times Square to announce
"Limited Time Magic."
Get ready for ‘Limited Time Magic’
Imagine a Valentine’s Day celebration that
lasts a week. Or hearing the Dapper Dans rocking
out with boy band hits in barbershop style.
Surprises like this are in store for Guests and Cast
alike each week in 2013 as Disney celebrates life’s
treasured — yet fleeting — moments with “Limited Time
Magic” at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts.
Here are a few of the unique experiences that will
begin in January:
• True Love: Instead of just one day, romance will be
celebrated throughout Valentine’s Week with special
moments and entertainment geared to lovebirds.
• Pirate Week: Talk like a pirate all week long
as the adventures of Jack Sparrow come to
life during a bicoastal buccaneer bash.
• Unleash the Villains: Disneyland Park will stay
open until the 13th hour (1 a.m.) on Friday
the 13th in September for a Disney Villains
dance party and other nighttime mischief.
• Golden Horseshoe Revue: The fabled Frontierland
show returns to Disneyland Park for one month
only, bringing back the corny jokes and enduring
songs that were enjoyed by Walt Disney himself.

updates in 2013.

VoluntEARS break records
in CHOC Walk donations
By Stephanie Colby
More than 16,000 Guests and Cast Members took
part in the 22nd annual CHOC Walk in the Park,
presented by the Disneyland Resort Oct. 14.
The Disney VoluntEARS team raised a new
record of $150,000 (including matching funds from
Disney), helping push the final walk total to more
than $1.9 million. The CHOC Walk has raised
nearly $21 million since it began 22 years ago.
Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis helps kick off the festivities.
For the first time, the route began in Disney California
Adventure Park, giving walkers a unique, early-morning
view of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land. The morning
began with festivities featuring Disney Channel star
Caroline Sunshine, who introduced CHOC patient and
2012 CHOC Ambassador Adela Jauregui and her family.
Finance Manager and VoluntEAR Bill Weeks
was one of the top fundraisers for the walk,
raising $6,000 in support of a close friend’s son,
Carson, who had received care at CHOC.

White (right) with Disney Channel star Caroline Sunshine.
Walkers get a great view of Cars Land as the sun comes up.

“I sent out a letter with Carson’s story to family,
friends and colleagues. … Never did I imagine I would
get the response I did,” John said. “I wanted people to
realize that CHOC needs our support, our love, because
they can’t reach all of the children in need without it.”
Lace up your skates
Ready for the holidays?
Halloween Time is over, and you know what that means: Holidays
at the Disneyland Resort are right around the corner! “The Happiest
Place on Earth” will get merrier beginning Nov. 12 through Jan. 6.
With our newly expanded resort, there are a lot of new elements
in store this year.
At Disney California Adventure Park:
•
Buena Vista Street will be decked out in vintage-style ornaments
and décor, including a 50-foot Christmas tree.
•
Children of all ages can visit the classic department store
Santa Claus at Elias & Co. on Buena Vista Street.
•
A whimsical “snowcar” will greet Guests at Cars Land, and each
address along Route 66 will feature holiday decorations reflecting
the personality of the “Cars” characters who live there.
•
New wintertime fun will rock the night at Mad T Party.
•
Returning favorites will include “a bug’s land” holiday decor and
“Phineas and Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party: Holiday Edition.”
At Disneyland Park:
•
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will greet Guests at Jingle
Jangle Jamboree in Big Thunder Ranch.
•
Candlelight Ceremony and Processional performances will
run from Dec. 3 – 20. (Dec. 1 – 2 are invitation-only events).
•
Returning favorites include Sleeping Beauty’s
Winter Castle; “Believe…in Holiday Magic”
fireworks show; “A Christmas Fantasy” parade; “it’s
a small world” holiday; and Haunted Mansion Holiday.
Guests can skate into the
world of Tinker Bell at a new
ice skating rink now open at the
Downtown Disney District.
Located between AMC 12
Theatres and the ESPN Zone, the
rink invites Guests of all ages to glide
along to special music and lighting
effects to celebrate the release of
Disney’s “Secret of the Wings.”
Beginning Nov. 12, a special
holiday village will surround the
rink, with themed chalets where
Guests can purchase seasonal foods
and merchandise. The fee is $15
for one hour of skating, and skate
rentals are free for Cast Members
who present a valid company ID.
Helmets will also be provided
and required for skaters' safety.
Heroes do work here
B y M at t h e w R . G o m e z
At first glance, Disneyland might
not seem like the most obvious fit for
U.S. military veterans looking for a
new career. But don’t tell that to Eric
Valdez — or the nearly 900 other
veterans hired this year by The Walt
Disney Company under the recently
launched Heroes Work Here initiative.
“It is a very natural transition from
the military to Disney culture. The
military is steeped in tradition, great
leadership, honor and patriotism.
Veterans certainly understand that
and appreciate it,” said Eric, a retired
U.S. Marine now working in Human
Resources at the Disneyland Resort.
“We embrace technology, tenacity,
diversity and teamwork. Our values
align very well with the values of
The Walt Disney Company.”
Launched in March 2012, the
Heroes Work Here initiative
addresses the challenges faced by
more than 1 million service members
who are projected to leave the U.S.
military between 2011 and 2016.
Disney has pledged to support their
reintegration into the workforce by
hiring upwards of 300 veterans each
year for the next three years. And the
company is already well on its way
From left: Andrea Hall, Kenny Perez, Eric Valdez
toward eclipsing that goal, which
also includes 3,000 hours of volunteer
service to support veterans and military
families during that three-year period.
More than 16,000 veterans have
applied for Disney jobs across all
segments of the company since the
start of the Heroes initiative, with
the greatest interest in the areas of
Information Technology, Facilities
and Park Operations. Working with
nonprofit partners such as Blue Star
and USA Cares, the initiative includes
career fairs, community awareness
initiatives, mentorship, campus
outreach to veterans attending college
and ROTC programs nationwide.
The Heroes initiative recognizes
the emotional toll a job search
can take, especially on military
veterans, and offers hope and
encouragement, said Eric, who
serves on the Heroes core team.
“It takes time for them to reacclimate to the civilian world,” Eric
added. “They are resilient, but we
are sensitive to individual situations
and hope to set them up for success
however possible to embrace life
at Disney and all it has to offer.”

Andrea Hall, Guest Services, Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, is with the 452nd Operations
Squadron and reports to March Joint Air Reserve Base in Riverside.
Determination:
the common denominator
Andrea Hall, a staff sergeant
in the U.S. Air Force for six years,
was hired earlier this year and now
works in Guest Services at Disney’s
Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. She
has experienced a direct connection
between military training and Disney’s
famously friendly Guest service.
“When I speak to Guests and
find out that they are military, I
thank them for their service first
and let them know that I’m still
in the Air Force,” Andrea said.
“There’s an immediate connection
… and they feel more comfortable
knowing that fellow veterans are
here to assist and protect their
families during their Disney visit.”
Bringing families together
Kenny Perez, a sergeant in the
U.S. Marine Corps, recalls wonderful
memories made at Disneyland as
a child. Recently hired in Security,
the father of five gets emotional
when reminded of the impact
Disney has had on his life.
“I applied for many jobs, and then
I saw a commercial about Disney
looking to add Cast Members,
especially military veterans,” said
Kenny, who was laid off from his
utilities job just before Christmas.
“Days later I received an email about
a Disney career expo in my area. It
just seems like it was meant to be.”
Kenny served two deployments
to Iraq for a total of 15 months,
and spent another 14 months
"Veterans are very process-oriented, which works well
with Disney’s team-oriented culture. There are many
similarities between the military way and the Disney way
that make The Walt Disney Company an attractive option
for military veterans.”
~ U.S. Army Col. Kevin Preston, who joined Disney this year to help lead
the Heroes Work Here initiative as Human Resources director for
Military Initiatives.

in Japan, away from his family.
He values each moment he gets
to spend with them now.
“Every day I am reminded of
how blessed I am to be working
here,” he said. “The military instilled
so many things in me — loyalty,
history, discipline — that it would
be impossible for me not to honor
those values by bringing them
into my work with Disney. I know
how valuable it is to this company
to make people happy. Now I
get to be a part of the magic.”
Veteran’s Day Flag
Retreat Ceremony
U.S. Army 1st Lt. Russell Fenton was
awarded the Bronze Star Sept. 6 in
Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
Bringing home the Bronze Star
B y M at t h e w R . G o m e z When Russell Fenton returns
to his position as construction
project manager at the Disneyland
Resort later this month, he’ll be
bringing with him more than his
experience building combat bases
while deployed in Afghanistan
over the last 10 months.
U.S. Army 1st Lt. Russell Fenton
is also returning with a Bronze Star.
He was awarded the honor
in September for serving as the
task force construction section
officer in charge of building five
combat outposts and expanding
three forward operating bases in
Afghanistan. According to the U.S.
Army, Russell managed the single
largest construction effort in theater
and in Regional Command East
history. He oversaw four construction
companies, two Navy construction
teams and one Air Force squadron
to support the 1st Brigade Combat
Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
Russell says he’ll never forget the
support he received from
Disney during his deployment.
“I know that our company hires
many veterans after they leave the
military, but Disney sent me off to war
with a going-away party, they sent
me emails and care packages from
fellow Cast Members throughout
the resort while I was gone, and
now they’re welcoming me back to
the family,” Russell said. “Disney
has been a part of my military
experience from start to finish. It’s a
huge breakthrough to take care of a
deployed Cast Member while he is
serving the country a world away,
and it’s something I’ll never forget.”
Russell was hired by the
company in 2008, right out of
college, “and I worked for three
months before leaving for six
months of Army Engineer Officer
Basic Course,” Russell says. “That’s
when Disney did something
amazing — I was promoted from
associate project manager to project
manager 1 while I was serving
with my unit in Afghanistan.”
Russell now serves in the
California National Guard one
weekend each month, and he shares
his Disney experiences with fellow
guardsmen in the hopes that they,
too, may consider working for Disney
after their military service is complete.
“Just knowing how well Disney
takes care of military veterans,
even when they are deployed and
unable to work as Cast Members,
speaks volumes about this company.
Disney really values its people.”

Cars Land-inspired float to join Rose Parade
The excitement of the newly expanded Disney California Adventure Park
will come to the 124th Rose Parade in Pasadena on New Year's Day in the form
of a Cars Land-inspired float. The float will feature floral representations of the
stars of “Cars,” such as Lightning McQueen, Sally, Luigi and Guido, along with
familiar sights from the new Cars Land, including Ornament Valley, Radiator

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala salutes Disney
The Walt Disney Company, along with supermodel and television host
Heidi Klum and NBA superstar Pau Gasol, were honored Oct. 20 at the
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Gala: Noche de Niños, for their support of the
hospital’s mission. Nearly 1,000 celebrities, philanthropists, business leaders
and local dignitaries attended the gala at The Events Deck at L.A. LIVE, raising
more than $2.6 million to fund the hospital’s most critical needs, including
patient care, support for families in need and pediatric medical research. The
Walt Disney Company was presented with the Courage to Care Award.
For nearly 30 years, The Walt Disney Company has supported Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles. The Disney Tri-Team VoluntEARS program has raised more
than $1.3 million to benefit the hospital’s pediatric cancer research program.

Riding for a good cause
More than 150 Cast Members formed the Disney
VoluntEARS team that participated in the Bike MS Bay
to Bay Tour Oct. 20-21. The cyclists on the challenging
100- to 150-mile ride from Irvine to San Diego know each
pedal is for a good cause; the Disney VoluntEARS team
has raised more than $100,000 so far this year for research
into multiple sclerosis and surpassed the $1 million mark
since its inception 13 years ago. In addition to riding, many
Disney VoluntEARS also supported the event at rest stops,
handing out water, snacks and providing moral support.
Rona Kay, manager at the Disneyland Hotel, was
participating for the 10th time in support of fellow Cast
Member Marilyn Krug. Marilyn, area manager of Guest
Relations, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002.
"I'm honored to say I've had around 300 people support
me," said Rona, who is the team's top fundraiser. "It takes
From left: Erica Choi, Carthay Circle Restaurant; Rona Kay, Disneyland Hotel
manager; and Ambassador Rene Torrico at the Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour.
a lot of work to reach out to everyone, but it's worth it to
raise as much money as possible. I feel like we're making
a difference; many people have been able to sustain their
health or get better thanks to the funds raised for research."
Marilyn said she appreciates the support and sends
out notes of thanks to the riders. "I thank them for the
time they spend training, for their sore bodies and tired
muscles, and I thank them for spending their weekends
riding up and down hills for those who only wish they
could ride a bike, but whose bodies won't let them."

This offer is good at any US Alamo locations. Disney employee identification must be presented at time of rental. Make your reservation 24 hours ahead of time. Sorry, this offer can’t be combined with another. And
obviously you have to meet standard rental qualifications. Drivers under age 25 may have to pay higher rates. This discount is only good on your base rate. Here are some things that might cost you extra. Taxes,
government charges of up to 23%, recoupment fees of up to $2 US per day or $3 US per rental, airport fees of up to $6 US per day or $19 US per rental, refueling, additional driver fee, one-way rental charge and
optional items [i.e. CDW Waiver Savers® up to $30 US per day]. Remember to check your insurance policy and/or credit card for rental vehicle coverage.
Don’t forget, availability is limited. This offer may change without notice. And, unfortunately, blackout dates may apply. Offer is void where prohibited.
