Our integrated platform facilitates a seamless interface between international oil markets and our local distributors and retailers. During the 12 months ending 31 December 2013, we sold over 5.1 million m3 of automotive fuels through our national networks of over 1,600 retail stations in countries across Africa, Central and South America and Asia Pacific. Our acquisitions in Australia in 2013 mean we now operate in regions across the country, with terminals, depots and a network of 260 retail sites. Our Terminal Management System (TMS) helps us to control and to speed up the loading of trucks in our terminals. We now have an extensive fleet of trucks to transport our fuel products each year. Whether it’s avgas or diesel for cattle ranchers in the outback or re-fuelling the family car for a trip to the beach, we can make sure our products reach our customers. 3 4 5 Develop terminal and storage infrastructure to support our downstream operations Maximise our expertise in integrating midstream and downstream assets to be reliable and flexible Do business the right way by trusting staff and setting the highest standards Our network of strategic supply hubs includes major storage facilities in Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Estonia, Dubai, Ivory Coast and Malaysia. At our Sillamäe terminal in Estonia we developed a system to handle fuels by rail in the most extreme weather. At Walvis Bay in Namibia, we have increased capacity so larger vessels can enter the deepwater port more regularly. Through working closely with the US Environmental Protection Agency we have upgraded our Bayamón terminal in Puerto Rico to the highest international standards and expect the first deliveries in early 2014. The Eagle Farm and Mackay terminals in Queensland will serve strategically important locations close to the Australian mining industry. Our 62 primary terminals are strategically located where road, rail and sea routes meet. We manage large-scale supply with a vertically integrated global fuel supply system, six global storage hubs and our diversified distribution platform. Through this network we bring security of supply to our customers. We can guarantee supplies from ship to terminal and truck to tank via our distribution network, including more than 1,600 service stations. Our globally managed and integrated assets secure high retail margins for downstream operations. We believe in doing the basics to the best possible standard, while our regional structure encourages professional autonomy. We now have over 6,000 employees in close-to 40 countries, with continual investment in training for all of our employees. We want to ensure they have the latest technical skills and technology to seamlessly deliver products to our customers. Strong corporate governance matters to us, and our Board oversees it. Our Compliance and Audit Committee is responsible for good governance and transparency and our environmental, health and safety issues are monitored by the HSEC Steering Committee. Our Risk Management Framework helps us to manage external, counterparty and operational risks and makes us transparent all the way along the supply chain. We are Puma Energy 25 Puma Energy retail station in Angola 26 We are Puma Energy At the heart of Puma Energy is a simple imperative – to always exceed our customers’ expectations. Meeting our customers’ needs in full is just a starting point. Our brand stands for something extra, for added value that delights customers, so they trust us and choose our products and services time and time again. This is equally true, whether the customer is an African entrepreneur buying generator fuel from us, a family in Central America enjoying coffee at a Puma service station, an oil major leasing our storage facilities in northern Europe or a mining company in Australia that trusts us to deliver fuels and lubricants to the Outback. Added value means different things to different customers, but there are consistencies in the way we make it happen. It starts by setting high safety standards and delivering excellent service – always personal and frequently unique to a single customer. It requires speed of thought and response, plus the right balance of flair, innovative thinking and solidity. Above all, it starts with the customer, not with us. They tell us it is not about product differentiation or competitive pricing; it is about guaranteeing them the right choice of products when and where they need them, in a ‘great service’ environment. Our supply and storage networks mean we can deliver the products that local people need – and by thinking very carefully about precisely where we acquire or build Puma service stations, we make sure that our brand reaches as many customers as possible. Our ‘great service’ guarantee starts with safety – so we invest in the very best facilities and technologies, from secure underground storage tanks to state-of-the-art security cameras – but really, it comes down to having great people. We recruit local people who know our markets well and share our values. We invest in their talents through great training, covering safety and every aspect of customer service. Local differences are important – so we make sure our service stations and convenience stores are well stocked with the products local people need – but there is no doubt that customers everywhere appreciate a well-signposted forecourt, a carwash that always works, washroom facilities that are kept spotlessly clean and the all-important human touch. This is why we have built a network of modern, purpose-built storage facilities – strategically placed around the world at locations where key sea, road and rail connections meet. Locations where it makes commercial sense to store and blend oil products for our own businesses and for a growing number of traders, wholesalers and energy majors. If fuel runs dry, revenue is lost. They trust us to ensure this never happens. We have earned this trust by building an exceptionally robust business-to-business offer, from the ‘copper belt’ in Africa to southeast Asia and Australia. We have shown that we can put in place the logistics and transport systems needed to guarantee delivery to some of the most inhospitable industrial locations on earth. We have demonstrated our long-term commitment to customers by working with them to develop products, technologies, support and delivery services they can trust absolutely. Not all of our business-to-business customers operate in such extreme conditions, but all of them benefit from the lessons we have learned by operating successfully at the frontier. We are Puma Energy 33 SUPPLY RETAIL WHOLESALE AVIATION B2B LUBRICANTS AVIATION BITUMEN Quality in every detail BUNKERING LPG 34 We are Puma Energy MARINE Aviation is a zero-tolerance business. Commercial airlines, private operators and the military can leave nothing to chance in the air or on the ground. For commercial operators in particular, time is money. They cannot afford to leave multi-million dollar assets standing unused on the tarmac for too long, so the availability of high quality aviation fuels is of paramount importance to them wherever their aircraft land or take-off. Our aviation business is built on a simple but strong proposition: we will exceed international quality standards in every aspect of our operations, whether we are operating at an international air hub in Central America, or a small airfield in rural Africa. And we will do this on commercially competitive terms. Our proposition resonates strongly with some of the world’s leading airlines – including BA, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and Swiss – who have refuelling contracts in place with us. It also makes us a first choice provider for the military in several countries and a great number of other aircraft operators. We can deliver for these customers because we have invested consistently to achieve quality in every detail. We have put in place logistic systems and built new storage facilities to ensure a secure supply of aviation fuels to the 27 airports we currently service. We have invested in safety: upgrading our assets and equipment to meet international safety and performance standards; and training our aviation technicians and operators to similarly high standards. This continuing investment has produced a successful aviation business, now a member of IATA, which continues to improve its performance to meet the evolving needs of customers – with state-of-the-art stock management systems introduced in 2012 and new operating manuals created in line with JIG standards. 27 AIRPORTS 11 COUNTRIES We are Puma Energy 35 RETAIL WHOLESALE BITUMEN AVIATION BUNKERING BITUMEN Providing a vital ingredient for economic growth LPG MARINE Around the world, particularly in southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, a number of factors are pushing up demand for energy in emerging countries. Populations are increasing and shifting from rural to urban environments; consequently, many countries are exploiting their natural resources to support investments in new infrastructure. In simple terms, countries as far apart as Angola and Vietnam are investing heavily to extend their towns and cities and create the roads and railways that connect these new urban areas. Our bitumen business provides one of the vital ingredients for this economic growth – the bitumen products necessary to build new highways. If a business can be said to ‘come of age’ our bitumen operation did so in Angola, over a very short period. There, following decades of civil strife, we effectively helped the authorities to rebuild the country’s road network by building a highly efficient bitumen business at high speed. 36 We are Puma Energy 5 NEW MARKETS IN ASIA 6,000 KM OF NEW ROAD IN ANGOLA 150°C REQUIRES TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT LOGISTICS We invested in modern storage and processing facilities at key strategic locations. We shifted from drum to reusable bulk bitutainers – improving safety, environmental standards and efficiency in the process. We created a fleet of heated bitutainers to deliver products where they were desperately needed. It is no exaggeration to say that in Angola we have helped to build the highways on which we are now building new Pumangol service stations. It is also no exaggeration to say that we have played an important part in transforming the country’s economic prospects. Now we are exporting the bitumen expertise we honed in Angola into other African countries, including Mozambique and Congo and further afield, Vietnam and Indonesia. We are building new businesses capable of delivering the vital ingredients governments in these countries need to fuel their fast growing economies too. We are Puma Energy 37 B2B AVIATION BITUMEN BUNKERING LUBRICANTS BUNKERING LPG MARINE Excellence offshore Refuelling ocean going vessels or fixed structures in deep water is a complex challenge that requires fit-for-purpose equipment and highly trained operatives. Safety is paramount, but for commercial operators, time is also a critical factor. Offshore from Africa, we are delivering safer, faster and more efficient refuelling services than ever before – meeting the needs of oil rig operators, container and tanker fleets as well as local fishermen. We are operating a fleet of specially equipped bunker barges. The vessels have been adapted to serve the huge deepwater rigs and moored vessels offshore. They incorporate high-pressure pumps to deliver fuels at a higher speed and utilise dynamic positioning systems to ensure safe connection to customer facilities or vessels. These highly specialised bunker barges have increased safety to new levels and reduced refuelling times by up to 50% thanks to increased flow rates. No surprise then, that a growing number of customers, including energy majors, logistics companies and local fishing businesses choose Puma to meet their offshore refuelling needs. They trust our service capability and our products, which include marine gas and the best-in-class marine lubricant. 38 We are Puma Energy 500+ VESSELS REACHING OUR TERMINALS IN 2013 1,751 BUNKERING OPERATIONS We are Puma Energy 39 B2B AVIATION BITUMEN FUELS & LUBRICANTS LUBRICANTS BUNKERING LPG MARINE The widest choice, the best choice Consumers today rightly expect that the fuels, lubricants and other oil-based products they buy deliver high performance and efficiency at a competitive price. They also expect the product they are offered to keep pace with evolving engine and machine technologies. 40 We are Puma Energy Competition among rival brands is fierce. That is good news for customers and, so we believe, good news for Puma Energy too. It pushes us to deliver choice and quality for our customers. In the markets we serve, we make sure we offer a wide choice of products that customers need – whether that is affordable gasoline for the family car, safe generator fuel, heavy industrial diesel or a specialist lubricant product. Customers in many markets know and trust our product brands, which include the hugely successful Premium Puma Maximum Power range for on and off road automobile use. They know they can rely on Puma to deliver quality and good value. In some markets, we are also partnering with the best to extend choice for our customers. In southern Africa, we have entered an agreement with Castrol that means we can offer their widely respected lubricants and technical support to our customers. Looking forward, we are investing in technology and innovation through this and other partnerships, to ensure the Puma brand continues to deliver the widest and best possible choice of products for our customers. 22.5 MILLION M3 OF OIL PRODUCTS HANDLED IN OUR FACILITIES IN 2013 We are Puma Energy 41 OVER 89% OF PUMA’S TERMINALS ARE API 650 COMPLIANT 42 We are Puma Energy B2B AVIATION BITUMEN LPG LUBRICANTS BUNKERING LPG MARINE Helping you save money and the environment Governments around the world recognise that LPG provides a low-carbon, low-pollution alternative, with a carbon footprint around 20% lower than conventional heating oil and 50% lower than coal. Increasing numbers of consumers choose LPG as an efficient and cost effective solution in place of kerosene and wood. The switch to LPG has clear environmental benefits, as deforestation becomes an increasingly pressing issue. And in some markets, Puma has become the partner of choice of national oil companies as they transition away from kerosene. We run established storage and supply LPG businesses in Central America, serving around 2 million domestic customers living near Havana, Cuba, where people trust Puma for quality and value our service. As governments, businesses and consumers in emerging markets become more focused on the need to include lower carbon alternatives in their energy mix, we believe that rising demand will help us build and extend our LPG offer. From storage, through bottling to distribution, our offer will be based on quality of service and high safety standards. Building on our experience we are also constructing LPG businesses in Africa. In Benin, we have around 5,000m3 storage, which allows us to supply our growing retail network. In Senegal, currently the continent’s largest LPG consumer, we also have substantial storage and distribution capacity. We are Puma Energy 43 Sustainability We are growing sustainably Investing to build better futures for our people and our neighbours in local communities. Operating safely in ways that protect the natural environment. 44 We are Puma Energy Right: John Nthakawma, Retail site owner, Malawi. One of many local entrepreneurs empowered by Puma Energy. Below: Fuel truck at Zambian community project. About sustainability at Puma Energy In a resource constrained world, sustainable business practices make good sense, so we are currently plotting a route map to sustainability that focuses on four big themes: economic development; health, safety and the environment; our people; our local communities. Why these four themes? Because we believe that together they ‘add up’ to a truly sustainable business. One that supports economic growth, through its products and services, supply chains and tax contributions; that operates safely in ways that protect the environment; that values its own people and supports its local communities. There is nothing abstract about it: our focus is on helping real people improve real lives. People like John Nthakawma. With help from Puma Energy Malawi, John built a fully branded Puma service station, which opened early in 2013. He is now extending the site to include a shopping complex and entertainment centre. We do not claim to be a fully sustainable business right now – but as John’s story and hundreds of others demonstrate – we have taken some important first steps on our sustainability journey. We are Puma Energy 45 Health, safety, environment & community We are championing safety and the environment Investing in the best training and the latest technology to ensure we meet international standards and match accepted best practice in every aspect of our operations. About safety and the environment at Puma Energy We operate in remote, inhospitable locations, often with limited backup, so it is essential that we set the highest possible safety and environmental standards – using international best practice as our benchmark. Road safety is a top priority for us, particularly in Africa, so we are running a number of safety awareness programmes aimed at the drivers who deliver our products and insisting transport contractors match our safety standards if they want to do business with us. We know that setting high standards helps to build trust with local communities and protects our own assets – so we set clear policies and make them a non-negotiable priority for every one of our employees. But policies are only effective if people understand and implement them, so we carry out regular performance audits and invest in training that encourages individuals to work safely and responsibly. As an energy business, we realise just how valuable and limited natural resources are, so we are focused on reducing our own energy and water use. We are also helping customers in energy-intensive industries such as mining reduce their energy use too. In 2012 we set up the Puma Energy Fund to fund local projects focused on education, the environment, health, disability, rural development, social inclusion, and social entrepreneurship. Through the Puma Energy Foundation we have helped local people in many different countries to achieve positive change in different ways. In Paraguay we are enabling improvements in primary education and health through Fundación Dequení. In Malawi we are funding a project run by Inter Aide to improve water quality and sanitation standards. In Kenya and Zambia, we support Alive & Kicking, a social enterprise that creates jobs for adults and educates young people about HIV/AIDS by making and selling leather footballs. These are just three of the many worthwhile projects funded by the Puma Energy Fund, which invested close to $1.7 million in 2013. We are Puma Energy 49 Around the world, day in and day out, PUMA people are sharing their experience, expertise and collective energy. Working together with our trusted partners they are fuelling frontier growth. Who are these PUMA people? In truth, they defy easy categorisation and each brings something unique to our business. What they have in common is their passion for our industry, their ‘can-do’ attitude and a pioneering spirit that shines through in everything they do. 50 We are Puma Energy We are 6,000 lives in a day We are Puma Energy 51 Come and talk to us Puma Energy enquiries@pumaenergy.com 52 We are Puma Energy This brochure is printed on GF Smith Colorplan.
