FACULTY & STAFF
William Pease, Director of Bands
As Director of Bands at the University of Virginia, William Pease is the Director of the Cavalier
Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Men's Basketball Band. Mr. Pease was born in Virginia and is
a graduate of Princess Anne High School in the Tidewater area. He completed a Bachelor of Science
degree in Music Education from West Chester University and a Masters of Music in wind band
conducting from James Madison University. Mr. Pease is currently completing his D.M.A from
James Madison University in wind band conducting.
Andrew Koch, Associate Director of Bands
Andrew Koch assists in the administration and rehearsal of the band program and is director of the
Concert Band and Women’s Basketball Band. A native of Southeastern Michigan, he received a
Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Western Michigan University and a Master of
Music Education degree, with a trumpet performance emphasis, from the University of South
Carolina in Columbia.
Michael Idzior, Assistant Athletics Band Director
Michael Idzior assists in all aspects of the band program and directs the Olympic Sports Bands.
Hailing from Pinconning, Michigan, he received a Bachelor's in Music Education from Western
Michigan University in 2004 and earned a Master's Degree in Euphonium Performance from the
University of North Texas in 2006.
Edward Savoy, Executive Assistant
Edward is a 2005 graduate of Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, with his B.A. in English and a
2007 graduate of James Madison University with his M.A. in English Literature. He returns as the
Executive Assistant for the Cavalier Marching Band.
Diane Gunnels, Baton Twirling Coach
Diane Gunnels is the baton twirling coach for the Cavalier Marching Band. Mrs. Gunnels was born
in Wilmington, North Carolina, and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University, where she majored in social work. She resides in Richmond, Virginia
and is the director/coach of the award winning Royalette Baton Corps.
Merav Frazier, Colorguard Coordinator
Merav is the Colorguard Instructor for the UVA Cavalier Marching Band. She is a graduate of the
University of South Florida with a B.A. in International Studies and a M.A. in Political Science. In
addition to her position with the Cavalier Marching Band, Merav also works for the UVA Office of
Undergraduate Admission.
Patrick Zampetti, Drum Line Instructor
Patrick has a long time association in the field of marching percussion. He participated in drum
corps as a performer for eight years, served as the Garfield Cadets' Drum Sergeant, and received the
prestigious Cadet of the Year Award. He studied at the Drummers’ Collective in New York City and
has instructed the Royales (NJ), Colonials (NJ), and Plebes (NJ) drum corps as well as Oliver Ames
(MA) and Mills Godwin (VA) high school bands.

Christopher Garay, Drum Line Assistant
Chris Garay has taught drumset and rudimental percussion privately to students in both New Jersey
and Virginia, and he has instructed drumlines from George Mason University, Chantilly High
School, Fauquier County High School, and Albemarle High School. Chris is originally from New
Jersey, and recently completed his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia, earning a
Bachelor of Arts with distinction in Philosophy and Religious Studies.
Joshua Richards, Senior Staff
Joshua Richards returns to the Cavalier Marching Band as a senior staff assistant for the 2009
season. Joshua graduated from UVa in 2009 with a BS in Environmental Science. Currently, he is
working toward his MS in Environmental Science and is leading a research project in West Virginia.
Taylor Burrow, Senior Staff
Taylor returns to the CMB for the 2009 season as a senior staff assistant after spending four years
playing quads in the Virginia Drumline. Taylor graduated from the University of Virginia in May
2009 with a BA in Economics. She will be attending the McIntire School of Commerce this fall,
pursuing an MS in Commerce with a concentration in Marketing and Management.

DRUM MAJORS & FEATURE TWIRLERS
Brian Francica, Drum Major
Brian graduated from Virgil I. Grissom High School in 2007
where he was a member of the marching band for four years.
He served as a Section Leader in the saxophone section his
sophomore year and was selected as a drum major his junior
and senior years.
At the University, Brian is a second-year biology major with
research interests in pathology and gene therapy. He will be
working at a lab on-Grounds with the ultimate goal of earning
a PhD. He actively participates in service opportunities such as Project Serve and Alternative Spring
Break, in which he helped rebuild houses that were damaged by hurricane Katrina. He is also a
member of the Virginia Club Gymnastics Team and HOOps band.
Sarah Deisz, Drum Major
Sarah Deisz is a member of the class of 2010, working toward a degree in Civil
Engineering with a minor in Environmental Science. She joined the marching
band as a first year and served as piccolo section leader for her second and
third years before returning for her final season as drum major. A flute player
and vocalist, Sarah graduated from McLean High School (in McLean, Va)
where she participated in all things band under the unmatched tutelage of Jim
Kirchenbauer. She was selected to the All-District Band all four years of high
school, and the All-Virginia Band as a senior. Sarah also played in the
American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra as a sophomore and junior, and
studied privately with Alice Weinreb.
At the University, Sarah has performed with the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra
as well as the HOOps Band, and has studied privately with Alan Cox. She is also a brother and
Parliamentarian for the Beta Chi chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity.
Outside of music, Sarah serves as the Fundraising Chair for the American Society of Civil Engineers,
UVA Student Chapter, is an active member of both Alpha Omega Epsilon, Professional
Engineering Sorority and the International Order of Job’s Daughters, and serves with Alternative
Spring Break.

Shantira Higgins, Drum Major
Shantira Higgins is a member of the class of 2011, entering her 3rd year in the
Cavalier Marching Band. A 2007 graduate of Woodside High School in
Newport News, Va, she was a member of the WoHS Marching Wolverines
during all four of her years. In the band, she served as the Alto Saxophone
Section Leader in her junior year, and was selected as one of two drum majors
her senior year. She also participated as first chair alto saxophone in the Wind
Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Bryan Austin. The
summer of her junior year, she was selected as one of four saxophones in the
state of Virginia to attend the Summer Residential Governor's School for
Performing Arts & Humanities at the University of Richmond.
Here at the University of Virginia, she has been a devoted member of the Cavalier Marching Band
since her first year. In her second season, she served as Drill Instructor for the Alto Saxophones, as
well as one of the Webmasters for the website. She has also performed in both the UVa Concert
Band and the UVa Hoops Band. This past summer, she was a camp counselor for the Summer
Cavalier Band Camps. When she is not playing her instrument, she is doing service for the band and
the Charlottesville community as a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band
Fraternity. Shantira is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology.
Matthew Gillwald, Drum Major
Hailing from Hamilton, Virginia, Matthew Gillwald is entering his third year at
UVA and in the Cavalier Marching Band. Participating in Loudoun Valley High
School’s Marching Band for 4 years, he held the positions of trumpet section
leader and vice president of the band in his senior year and received the Semper
Fidelus award for outstanding music. He was named to the All District Concert
Band in his junior and senior year and participated in the All District Jazz
Ensemble his senior year.
Matt is pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering from the School of
Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Within the E-School, he is involved
with the Chemical Engineering Student organization (AICHE) and the new Nanotechnology
Student Organization (NExT). Matt will be studying abroad at the Technical University in Munich
for his Spring Semester of 2009 and is pursuing a minor in German. He is on an ad-hoc committee
of SEAS devoted to improving engineer involvement abroad.
During his second year in the CMB, Matt was Drill Instructor for the trumpet section and recipient
of the CMB Outstanding Marcher Award. He has also performed with the Concert Band, Wind
Ensemble and HOOps Band. Matt is a brother of the Beta Chi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi,
National Honorary Band Fraternity.

Audrey Johnston, Feature Twirler
For the 2009 season of the Cavalier Marching Band, Audrey Johnston returns for
her 2nd year as Feature Twirler. She graduated with top 6 honors at Cosby High
School, and spent the majority of her life growing up in Richmond, Va. After 13
years of dedication with the award-winning Royalettes Baton Corps and 2 years of
feature twirling for her high school, Audrey’s twirling and studies led her to join
the UVA community in 2008.
During her four years as a student, she hopes to advance in the field of Biology,
with a focus on nutritional science. In the future, Audrey’s plans will hopefully
lead her to becoming a Registered Dietician working in a hospital environment.
Audrey first started baton twirling at age six with the Royalettes and has since
continued to practice, perform, and compete with them on the local, regional, and
national level. In the past few years she has taken on a serious role of coaching,
and serving as Captain of her senior team. Her time with the Royalettes has led
her to experience many great achievements, especially being an advanced member
of a national winning team, and gaining the title of teenage Miss Majorette of America for the
intermediate division at nationals in 2007. Audrey now competes in the College division where she
proudly represents the University of Virginia and the CMB.
Aside from baton, Audrey’s interests at the University include participating with the Alternative Spring
Break organization, as well as Warm Up America. This year, she hopes to volunteer through Madison
House in a hospital position.
Brittany & Victoria Maiden
Brittany and Victoria Maiden are proud to be the Cavalier Marching Band’s
first Sabre Twins. The girls graduated from Lee-Davis High School and have
been twirling with The Royalettes Baton Corps of Richmond, Virginia since
the age of five. Through this organization, they have displayed leadership
skills, performance techniques and continuous dedication. They have traveled
throughout the country to perform and compete individually, as a duet, and as
team members. Competing in the National Baton Twirling Championships
competition each year on the campus of Notre Dame, they have consistently
placed “top three” in the duet division. They have captured the title as the
USA Grand National Champions in 2004 and 2007 and have won the MidAtlantic and State Duet Championship title for the past six years. In 2007, they were selected as United
States ambassadors to Peru where they enjoyed twirling in parades and for underprivileged children.
Brittany enjoys working with children and volunteers annually in Relay For Life. Her interest lies in
education and she plans to become a middle school physical education teacher.
Victoria volunteers with the Children’s Miracle Network, and plans to further her volunteerism through
Virginia Blood Services. She aspires to major in English with a minor in journalism and hopes to become
a television news anchor.
Being first years in the Cavalier Marching Band, they are very excited and thrilled to share their love of
baton twirling with thousands of Wahoos!

CMB HISTORY
The University of Virginia band program was initiated by a large gift from Carl and Hunter Smith
that provided money for a new student marching band. William Pease was hired as the band’s first
director in August 2003. After a year of planning and recruiting, the Cavalier Marching Band (CMB)
held their first band camp on August 20, 2004. New members began learning an exciting halftime
show and a traditional pregame show that was designed to incorporate school songs, which had
fallen into obscurity over the past century. The University had high expectations of its new marching
band, and on September 11, 2004 at the home opener against the University of North Carolina, the
CMB performed its pregame and halftime shows in front of 62, 790 fans. Since then, the CMB has
rewarded its fans with memorable halftime shows and has performed with many special guest artists
including The Temptations, Al Chez, Tom “Bones” Malone, Sid McGinnis, Ivan Rutherford, and
Chad Hugo. The CMB is also featured in the film “Marching Band,” created by world-renowned
French producer and writer Claude Miller.
Since 2004, the band has grown to include over 275 members. The CMB performs a different
halftime show at each and every home game. The repertoire of songs has included everything from
rock to jazz, pop tunes to classical melodies, and movie favorites to swing charts. In addition to
home performances, the CMB travels to many away games in support of the team. Post-season
appearances at the 2004 MPC Computers Bowl, the 2005 Music City Bowl, and the 2007 Gator
Bowl have been unique opportunities for members to travel with the team and to perform for fans
at parades and team rallies.
The CMB presents an annual concert at the John Paul Jones Arena, which highlights music from
throughout the football season. The first concert in 2007 featured a joint performance with the
Marching Virginians from Virginia Tech. In 2008, the concert “Holiday with the Hoos” showcased
halftime performance elections, featured UVA Ensembles, and generated support for the local toy
drive. The CMB looks forward to continuing this tradition in years to come.
Over its first five season, the CMB has provided students with unique leadership and performance
opportunities. Additionally, the CMB hosts an honor band of 300 high school students at its annual
band day and holds a summer camp, giving students the opportunity to mentor and teach middle
and high school band students. These two events, coupled with the experiences from the football
season, create a sense of family and promote a love of UVA among members and fans alike.
CMB members come from very diverse academic backgrounds, representing over 80 different
majors from each of the undergraduate schools at the University. The students all share a passion
for marching band and all things UVA. The energy and dedication of the marching band students as
well as the enthusiasm and support of the Wahoo fans will continue to provide the University with a
top-notch collegiate marching band.

CURRENT SEASON
The 2009 season offers the Cavalier Marching Band another opportunity to inspire athletes and
thousands of cheering Wahoo fans; this season’s half-time shows will even feature accomplished
theater performer Ivan Rutherford and the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps.
The CMB continually challenges its members, demanding both a high quality of music and avid
leadership. The band is proud to have over 100 hard-working student leaders, serving both on and
off the field to help this organization run as smoothly as possible. Without their assistance, the band
program would not have reached the point it is at today. The CMB performs a different,
memorized halftime show for each home football game every season. This year, UVA will be
hosting 7 different teams; in order to maintain the high quality of its shows, the marching band
requires the utmost dedication from its members.
As has become tradition in the last few years, the CMB will be hosting approximately 300 high
school students on November 14, 2009 for Band Day. This event is a great activity that helps
encourage musicianship beyond the high school level and promotes both the Cavalier Marching
Band and the University as a whole. In the past, the response from local high schools has been
terrific, and this year appears to be no different. The band has an excellent series of songs lined up
for the Boston College game, when the field will be crowded with over 500 players belting out tunes
for the stadium’s thrill and delight.
The marching band here at UVA also travels to select away games as well. This year, an assemblage
of approximately 100 students will travel with the Cavalier football team to UNC and Maryland.
Attendance at each of these games is optional for band members, but it provides an excellent
opportunity to travel and experience sports outside the hallowed Grounds of the University.
With all this and more, it will certainly be an exciting year for the Cavalier Marching Band!
