Puberty Begins
Puberty- The rapid growth and sexual
maturation that end childhood.
● Puberty begins with a flux of hormones
that affects a child's biological state. It
normally takes place between ages 8 to
14 and lasts a duration of 4 years.
Menarche- a girl's first menstrual period
(marking the begining of ovulation)
Spermarche- a boy's first ejaculation that
occurs during sleep or direct stimulation
Body Rhythms
Once the HPA axis has occured, hormones
will affect stress, appetite, sleep, and other
vital parts of healthy growth..
● Emotions and impulse increase
● Biorhythms fluctuate; such as the times
your body needs sleep.
● Most adolescent males have what is
reffered to as eveningness. This makes
teenagers more alert at night than in the
day...

The Transformations Of Puberty
•Physical growth

rapid physical growth that occurs during
puberty.
–Tonsils & adenoids (lymphoid system)
decrease in size.
–Skin becomes oilier, sweatier and more
prone to acne

•Primary Sex Characteristics: Organs
involved in conception and pregnancy.
•Secondary Sex Characteristics: Traits
not directly involved in reproduction.
(Ex. Woman’s breasts or Man’s low
voice)
Sexual Maturation Cont'd
–Sexual Activity
•Hormones trigger thoughts and emotions.
•Sex too soon
–Adolescent development is hazardous for 5 reasons
»1. Earlier puberty & weaker social taboos mean teens have
sexual experiences at younger ages. Early correlates with
depression and drug abuse.
»2. Unmarried teen mothers.
»3. Raising a child has become more complex and expensive.
»4. Mothers of teenagers are often employed and therefore less
available as caregivers.
»5. STI’s are more widespread and dangerous.
–Teen pregnancy
–STI
–Sexual abuse
Formal, Operational Thought
Accomodation involves altering existing
schemas as a result of new information or
new experiences
Assimilation is the process of taking in new
information to our previously existing
schemas
Hypothetical Deductive Thought
Adolescents no longer need to have
experienced a specific situation to figure out
how a particular scenario might pan out
Leads to Conviction & Criticism
Abstract Thinking
-Inductive/Deductive Reasoning
Intuitive, Emotional Thought
Adolescents are more prone to follow an
impulse, than to deduct a rational approach
to new scenarios
Dual-Process Model
-Associative Retrieval
-Intentional Retrieval
