How to speed up the ripening of banana ? Materials required Non-ripen banana Materials required • • • • • • 9 small plastic box 1 large plastic box cotton moist absorbent black plastic bag lamp • refrigerator • thermometer • digital camera The experiment was setup as shown below. In order to increase the accuracy of the experiment, two bananas were put in each plastic box. Set-up 1 : To investigate the effect of temperature on the ripening of banana Put on top of table Put inside the refrigerator Set-up 2 : To investigate the effect of light on the ripening of banana Covered with black plastic bag Exposed to light throughout the whole experiment Set-up 3 : To investigate the effect of humidity on the ripening of banana Moist cotton Moist absorbent Set-up 4 : To investigate the effect of the volume of oxygen on the ripening of banana Small volume of oxygen Large volume of oxygen The experiment was started and was done for 4 days. Result of the set-up 1 : Put on top of table Put inside the refrigerator The banana ripened faster at a higher temperature. Result of the set-up 2 : Covered with black plastic bag Exposed to light throughout the whole experiment There was no difference. Result of the set-up 3 : Moist cotton Moist absorbent The banana ripened faster at a lower humidity. Result of the set-up 4 : Small volume of oxygen Large volume of oxygen There was no difference. Conclusion : Only temperature and humidity could affect the ripening of banana. Higher temperature and lower humidity could speed up the ripening of banana.
