Karl Woermann, without first having seen it, bought this work in Florence for 9,000 Reichsmarks upon suggestion of the famous English art dealer and connoisseur Charles Fairfax Murray (1849–1919). As soon as the work arrived in Dresden it became immediately clear that it was only a copy after the original painting by Lorenzo Lotto in the Bridgewater Gallery (today in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh, inv. no. 2418). From 1920, the copy was exhibited on permanent loan in the Saxon Legation (‘Sächsischen Gesandtschaft’) in Berlin (Voßstrasse, 19). In 1922, during the directorate of Hans Posse, the painting was estimated 8,000 Lire and sold in Venice together with five pastels by Rosalba Carriera (1673–1757). In exchange for these works, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister acquired the Annunciation attributed to Lorenzo Cossa which is now regarded as a work of the Ferrara school, ca. 1500–10 (gall. no. 47 A). On the disposal of the painting from the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden see Hans Posse’s letter to the Ministry of Culture and public Education (‘Ministerium des Kultus und öffentlichen Unterrichts’), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD), archive, documents (‘Akte’), no. 4, vol. 15, Vermehrung, 1921–24, folio 293. 113 114 115 116 117 118 119 120 121 122 123 124 125 l Cavazzola, Portrait of a Gentleman, gall. no. 201 Bartolomeo Veneto, Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist, gall. no. 201A Moretto da Brescia (copy), The Madonna of Paitone, gall. no. 202 Paris Bordone, The Holy Family with Saints Jerome, gall. no. 205 Cavazzola, cat. no. 2411 Cavazzola [p. 167] Cavazzola Cavazzola [p. 235] Cavazzola Leonardo da Vinci (school of), cat. no. 31 Leonardo da Vinci (school of) [p. 230] Leonardo da Vinci (school of), gall. no. 292 Bartolomeo Venetol [p. 224, 335] Bartolomeo Veneto Moretto da Brescia, cat. no. 254 a Paris Bordone ?, cat. no. 258 Moretto da Brescia (copy) [p. 194, 197] Paris Bordone [p. 225] Moretto da Brescia (copy) Moretto da Brescia (copy) Bonifazio de’ Pitati, The Finding of Moses, gall. no. 208 Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop), Adoration of the Shepherds, gall. no. 210 Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop), The Holy Family with Saints Elisabeth and Catharine, gall. no. 211 Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop), Raising of Lazarus, gall. no. 212 Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop), Virgin with Child and Saints, gall. no. 213 Polidoro da Lanciano, Holy Family with Saint Magdalene and a Venetian Patrician, gall. no. 214 Polidoro da Lanciano, Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, gall. no. 215 Gualtiero Padovano, Allegory of Munificence, gall. no. 217 Paris Bordon, Portrait of a Man, gall. no. 219 Bonifacio Bembo, cat. no. 261 Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 219] Bonifazio de’ Pitati Moretto da Brescia (copy) [p. 288, 294, 360] Paris Bordone (reminiscent of Polidoro da Lanciano) [p. 327] Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 321] Giorgione, cat. no. 219 Bonifazio de’ Pitatim [p. 182, 186, 213, 222] Bonifazio de’ Pitati Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 272, 277, 314, 323] Bonifazio de’ Pitati (worskshop) Jacopo Palma il Vecchio, cat. no. 246 Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 213, 222] Bonifazio de’ Pitati Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 313, 323] Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop) Bembo, Bonifacio ?, cat. no. 264 Bembo, Bonifacio, cat. no. 262 Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 220] Bonifazio de’ Pitati Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 321] Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop) Paris Bordone Paris Bordone Bonifazio de’ Pitati Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop) Bonifazio de’ Pitati [p. 207, 220] Polidoro da Lanciano [p. 207] Polidoro da Lanciano Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop) Bonifazio Veronese [p. 305, 321] (workshop) Polidoro da Lanciano Polidoro da Lanciano [p. 305] Polidoro da Lanciano, cat. no. 266 Polidoro da Lanciano [p. 207] Polidoro da Lanciano Polidoro da Lanciano [p. 305] Polidoro da Lanciano Domenico Campagnola, cat. no. 260 Giorgione, cat. no. 221 Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop) [p. 226] Not by Giorgione, poor [p. 182] Venetian, mid of the 16th century Venetian, mid of the 16th century Bonifazio de’ Pitati (workshop) [p. 329] Not by Giorgione, poor [p. 272 ff.] Venetian, mid and end of the 16th century Venetian, mid and end of the 16th century Polidoro da Lanciano, cat. no. 265 Gustavo Frizzoni was the first to attribute the painting to Bartolomeo Veneto: Gustavo Frizzoni, ‘I progressi della critica artistica in proposito di due quadri del Museo Borromeo’, Archivio storico dell’arte, 4: III, 1891, 160–171, here 171. m Crowe and Cavalcaselle had also already attributed the painting to Bonifazio de’ Pitati: Crowe and Cavalcaselle (1871), 1912, as note e, vol. 3, 48–49.
