AUGUST 7, 2009 PortagePost What’s Inside A Banner Day Mission, vision, values updated Portage Health President and CEO Jim Bogan has announced the updating of the healthcare organization’s mission, vision and values statements. The new statements became effective July 1 with the start of the new fiscal year. The updated statements are as follows: Our Mission To improve the health of our community by providing the highest quality healthcare services. Our Vision • Portage chosen for STAAR project to be a leader in promoting preventative medicine, restoring health and enhancing the quality of life. • to have a culture of teamwork and safety. • to be a great place to work. Learning and fun at Camp 911 • to be the first choice for healthcare services. Additional wording to the vision statement promotes an emphasis on preventative medicine, formerly known as “wellness,” that empowers people to take charge of their health. Teamwork and safety are also emphasized in the vision statement, he said, which have become increasingly more prevalent in national healthcare discussions. “Much of our focus recently has been on safety programs, from hand-washing to patient medication barcoding systems to wristband code standardization,” Bogan said. “Teamwork and safety is a big piece of healthcare today, to provide a safe environment for our patients and staff members alike.” The values statement, which formerly followed the FISH philosopy of Choose Your Attitude, Be There, Play, and Make Their Day, has been expanded to more closely align with Portage Health’s strategic priorities. “The strategic priorities flow directly from the values we hold important, that come together to provide a healthy quality of life,” Bogan said. Despite the changes, Bogan said it was important for staff members to know the ideas behind FISH were not being abandoned. “FISH is still a valuable philosphy that we embrace wholeheartedly,” he said. 2 Portage Post Portage Health to open Express Care Center in Houghton Portage Health has announced it will open an Express Care Center in Houghton. Portage Health Express Care will be located at 921 W. Sharon Avenue in the former Blockbuster Video space. Opening is scheduled for this fall. The Express Care center will accommodate those patients with illnesses or injuries that require medical treatment but that are not serious enough to warrant a visit to the emergency department. Portage Health Facilities Staff Members Roger Wetelainen, left, and Paul Russell hang a banner on the former Blockbuster Video building Friday, July 31. The building will be the home for the new Portage Health Express Care Center in the fall. Portage Health President and CEO Jim Bogan said the Express Care center will address two of the main issues facing most communities — access and affordability. In addition, the center is in keeping with Portage Health’s mission to improve the health of our community by providing the highest quality healthcare services. Renovation of the 6,000-square-foot building will begin soon. PH chosen for STAAR project Portage Health is the only Upper Peninsula hospital that has been selected to participate in the STate Action on Avoidable Rehospitalizations (STAAR) pilot project. The three-state initiative seeks to reduce the number of people who must be readmitted to the hospital for clinical reasons related to the initial hospitalization. STAAR seeks to reduce 30-day rehospitalization rates (patients being hospitalized again within 30 days of discharge) by 30 percent, while increasing patient and family satisfaction with transitions and coordination of care. “We welcome opportunities such as this to identify where improvements can be made for the increased safety of our patients,” said Betty MacInnes, Portage Health Vice President for Quality Management. Earlier this week, MacInnes and Portage Health President and CEO Jim Bogan attended the Michigan STAAR kick-off meeting held in East Lansing to display an exhibit and learn more about timelines for the the project. Safety can be fun at Camp 911 Tours of fire trucks were just one of the crowd-pleasers at Camp 911 co-sponsored by Portage Health August 4 and 5 at the Mercy EMS grounds near the airport. The event drew 69 local sixth-graders who learned more about emergency response situations. HME receives accreditation Apothecary Home Medical Equipment recently passed its accreditation by The Compliance Team. The Compliance Team, of Palatine, IL, is the accreditation body for home medical equipment. “Accreditation confirms that the Apothecary HME meets the guidelines in regards to patient care and safety for the products and services provided,” said Jason Evans, Apothecary Director.
