TPR in Theory

TPR, developed by James J. Asher, is a great way of engaging students in the preproduction stage of language learning. This corresponds with the presentation and/or practice stage in the inlingua method. The teacher presents the new concept and the students listen and respond physically as opposed to orally.

TPR in Theory

● Student listens and responds physically

● Engages right side of brain

● No stress

TPR in Theory

Advantages

● Low stress

● Long-term retention

● Successful for all ages

● Fun

Advantages understanding develops first, retention increases through the movement of the body, and speaking is not forced. Teachers can also use activities evoking a physical response to check for understanding and to review previously learned material.

TPR in Practice

TPR in Practice

● Simon Says

● Show Me

○ body parts, objects in classroom, items in poster/picture

● Relay Race

● Geography

● Bingo

Simon Says and Show Me … can be done as a class, where the teacher gives commands and the class follows as a whole or individually. They can point with their fingers or use a laser pointer.

Relay Race -The class is divided into two teams and each team must place word labels appropriately on the objects or pictures of the objects.

Geography -great as an icebreaker. Students are given a flashcard with the name of a country (their country of origin, for example) or a state and they must physically arrange themselves in the room. The teacher determines which direction is north and students must figure out their correct position in relation to the other countries or states.

Bingo or Conga can be used to review vocabulary and even simple sentence structure. The physical response is minimal, but speaking is limited and students, especially beginners, are less apprehensive.

TPR in Practice

● Drawing

○ shapes, colors, prepositions of place

● Manipulatives - flashcards, labels

○ Matching: phrasal verbs, synonyms, antonyms, picture/word, word/sentence

○ Syntax for questions or sentences

Drawing -Describe a house, an animal, a monster and have students draw

Flashcards

Each student has a flashcard with a vocabulary word and they must find the person in the room with the matching synonym.

Syntax-In small groups, students unscramble the words to make a sentence.

Warm Up Activities

● 5-minute talk

● Draw 3 things

● Categories

● Magazine pictures

● Find someone who...

When the cat’s got your tongue...

At the beginning of class, teachers may want to warm up the class by giving the students a relaxed, informal opportunity to “switch on” their English.

5-minute talk -set a timer and give the class a random word like fish or clouds and have them talk to a partner about anything that comes to mind about this word. The teacher circulates around the room and corrects students when necessary or writes incorrectly stated sentences on the board. At the end of 5 minutes, the class can correct the sentences on the board.

Draw 3 things -students can use this as a way of introducing themselves. They draw

3 things that represent themselves and talk about them with the class.

Categories -in teams or individually, the class writes as many items from the given category (items in a refrigerator, junk food, mammals, etc.) in 2 minutes. Teams compare lists after 2 minutes to see which has the most items listed.

Magazine pictures -teachers can keep a picture file with interesting photos and use them to prompt a story, dialogue, questions, etc.
