But remind her that final exams stand between her and that nice, long break. And she’ll be doing herself a favor if she prepares for those exams sooner rather than later. Encourage your teen to take part of a day at the beginning of this month to get a jump start on finals later. Suggest that she: • Stock up on materials. Ask your teen what she needs for effective studying—note cards, highlighters, pens. Suggest she get more supplies if she’s running low. • Organize notes. Finals are all about review. Your teen will be ahead if she has all her notes in one place, and in an order that makes sense to her. • Talk with teachers. Many teachers will offer hints about how to focus on studying. A comment like, “Remember how often we referred to the concepts in Chapter Six,” can be very helpful. • Come up with a study plan. Most tests require serious study and review. Encourage your teen to use a calendar to block out study time and schedule the other things she needs to do before the end of school. Don’t forget to do your part, as well, to help your teen get ready for those final exams! Make sure she has a quiet place. H ELP YOUR HIGH SCHOOLER FINISH YEAR - END SCHOOL PROJECTS ON TIME He has six weeks to work on his last project for history. It’s half his grade for the last marking period. Although he keeps telling you he’s “on top of it,” you aren’t so sure. The truth is that teens don’t have a very good sense of time. When he thinks that he has six weeks left, he’s forgetting about the math tests, two track meets and the prom that are coming up. Nagging won’t work. Instead, help him figure out how to find the time for that project. Here’s how: Sit down with your teen and a big calendar. • Have him cross out the days he won’t be working on the project. He won’t have time on the days of his track meets or on the day of the prom. He needs to also cross off the days he has to work or has other commitments. • Have him count how many days are left. There will probably be fewer than he thought! He will need to use those days efficiently to get his project finished on time. • Don’t let him panic. Remind him that the busier people are, the more they often accomplish. He can finish on time, but she will have to get busy—today. C OLLEGE - BOUND JUNIORS Study for and prepare to take the SAT or ACT exams early next fall. Some colleges also require the SAT II for admission. Check with your counselor for information about the SAT II Subject Tests. Are you saving money for college? Summer jobs are a good way to earn money for college without taking time away from studies. Take time to discuss options with your parents and learn about college financing possibilities. Juniors and their parents should be doing as much reading and research about colleges as possible. Spend time talking with people who can help you with this subject. Make an appointment with your counselor to discuss plans and ideas. Your counselor can help you find college information on the web. Now is the time to write to colleges to request admissions information and applications. Spring and summer are convenient times for juniors to visit various college campuses. If possible, make contact with the school’s Admissions Office for a personalized tour and make an appointment to talk with admissions staff or personnel. Students who have already completed either Algebra I or Geometry and have not passed a state math exam will be given a “make up” exam. Make up exams will be given the same days and time. Students in the class of 2012 can pass the HSPE / WASL math exam or one end-of-course exam (or make up exam) to meet the state math graduation requirement (or earn two credits of math after 10th grade as long as they have taken a state math exam at least once). Students in the class of 2013 and 2014 must pass one of the math end-of-course exams to meet the state math graduation requirement. Students in the class of 2015 and beyond must pass both end-of-course exams to meet the state math graduation requirement. BIOLOGY END-OF-COURSE EXAMS 1st week of June All 10th grade students will take the Biology end-of-course exam. This test replaces the science HSPE. Students in 9th, 11th and 12th grade will take the exam if they are currently enrolled in Biology. Students in the class of 2014 (current 10th graders) must take the Biology end-of-course exam but passing it is not a state graduation requirement. Scientific calculators are sufficient for both the Biology and Math EOC exams but graphing calculators may also be used. A limited number of calculators are available for students to check out but they need to arrive early so they can be on time to their test. If a student is going to use their own graphing calculator, they need to be advised that the memory will be cleared before the test and they should store all data and software they wish to save on a computer or a calculator not being used for the test. I NFORMATIONAL N EWSLETTER FOR P ARENTS & S TUDENTS P AGE 12 FAB M AY S POTLIGHT ARTIST Fine Arts Boosters featured artist for May is Morgan Honshke. Morgan, a junior, is described as “awesome” by Mr. Andrews. "She was an easy pick to represent Visual Arts." Just visualize Morgan coming into the room with her large art portfolio slung over her shoulder - the sign of a serious artist. After attending Shoreline High School for her freshman year, Morgan moved back to Kingston with her parents and two younger siblings. She prefers the personal attention of our much smaller KHS. She was born here but spent some growing up years in Indiana with tornadoes as part of the experience. "I've always loved it here" she says. Morgan finds painting as well as telling and writing fantasy/adventure stories as her way "to get things bottled up out of my head. If I can't write it then I can paint it, draw it or tell it. That is an accomplishment." Drawing since she was six she is influenced by her sculptor father who works at Seattle Art Institute. To see her impressive AP portfolio of twenty four pieces is quite an experience. It includes a wide range of subjects, styles and media as well as her latest interest computer cartooning, where she starts with original drawings. (Currently nineteen KHS students are preparing their intense AP Art portfolios to be sent to the College Board for rating.) Although they don't influence the styles of her own work, Morgan enjoys vintage art of the 20s and classic Greek and European art. At sixteen she is pondering her future in art and considers Library Sciences at Simmons in Boston for becoming an art archivist. Morgan’s artwork will be on display at the 10th annual Festival of The arts on Wednesday, May 23rd, at Kingston High School from 5-9pm. W HOOPING C OUGH & T DAP V ACCINATIONS FOR H IGH S CHOOL Pertussis, or otherwise known as “whooping cough” is an acute illness with an infectious cough. There continues to be cases of pertussis in the United States despite routine childhood vaccinations for the past 50 years. There have been recent cases of pertussis identified in Kitsap county as well as other communities in our state. The primary reason for the continued presence of pertussis in our communities is that immunity to pertussis lessens within 5 to 10 years after completion of childhood vaccinations, leaving teenagers and adults susceptible to the disease. What is Tdap? Tdap is a vaccine formulated for teens and adults to protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) Who should get Tdap? • Children ages 11 and 12 • Teens and adults of all ages (replace 1 tetanus booster with 1 dose of Tdap) • Adults who care for or have contact with infants Washington State Department of Health requires all students in grades 6-10 to have one dose of Tdap if it has been at least five years or more since the last one. Your School Health Consultants strongly encourage you to consider getting a Tdap for your student and consider one for yourself if you have not already had a dose.
