Set in Kenya against the landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, it is a powerful story of an expat community, love and a passion for flight. It is an extraordinary adventure of a woman before her time. A Lucky Life Interrupted: A Memoir of Hope by Tom Brokaw is a memoir of a dramatic year of change in a life. It is not only the story of his journey after diagnosis but of the importance of patients taking an active role in their own treatment, and the vital role of caregivers. Above all, he offers a message of understanding and empowerment, resolve and reality, hope for the future and gratitude for a well-lived life. The Tutor by Andrea Chapin is the story of the “lost” years of William Shakespeare and the author’s imagined events of those years. History springs to life in this well written novel about the young William Shakespeare and the passionate, intelligent woman who changed the course of his life—not to mention literature—forever. In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume is set in the 1950s against a backdrop of actual events the author experienced. Her latest novel has all of the hallmarks of her unparalleled storytelling-- filled with memorable characters that cope with loss, remember the good times and, finally, wonder at the joy that keeps them going. All Titles are in Large Print for your Reading Pleasure Pat Harkins Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, And life to everything. - Plato REGULAR PRINT “Go Set a Watchman,” is Harper Lee’s sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Some critics, and others, have been startled, and even angry, that the saintly-seeming Atticus of “Mockingbird” comes across as racist in Watchman.” But his defending a Negro boy who, in the former book, had been falsely accused of raping a white girl, showed that he was a conscientious and courageous lawyer-- not that he was in favor of total equality of the races. He attended a “Citizens’ Council” meeting in the second book, so he could, as he told his daughter, Jean Louise, “see who the Klan members were without their masks,” He knew segregation had been wrong, but was afraid Negros were unprepared for integration. “And why didn’t you help them before this?” cried his daughter. “Blueprints,” by Barbara Delinsky, is about a home renovation business which shows its weekly progress on the local public TV station. It is run by mostly women, and Caroline, who hosts it on camera, is about to be replaced by someone “more appealing to younger viewers.” “Island Girls,” by Nancy Thayer, has Arden and her sister, Meg, honoring their father’s will, which requires them to spend three summer months in his luxurious mansion on Nantucket Island before they can inherit it. The catch is that their half-sister, Jenny, whom they can’t stand, will be there—equally an heir. It’s a rough beginning. Jane Green’s Summer Secrets, is about a woman whose “best friend is vodka,” until, hearing the stories of others and telling her own at AA meetings, she gains the strength to begin a life of sobriety and the courage to repair the damaged relationships of her past life. LARGE PRINT “Winter at the Door,” by Sarah Graves, is about a tough and experienced policewoman, “Lizzie,” who takes an assignment in Bearkill, Maine, officially, to investigate the suspicious deaths of four policemen. But, having gotten a tip that a child who looks like her missing niece has been seen in those dense northern woods, she also has a personal mission. “Mrs. Lee’s Rose Garden,” is by Carlo DeVito, who, working with Mary Anna Custis Lee, daughter of George Washington”s adopted son and wife of Robert E. Lee, produced this informative book about Arlington House and the beginnings of the cemetery. There are photographs throughout the book. page 7 Florence Raynal September Resident Birthdays 1 4 4 4 7 8 9 10 10 14 14 16 16 16 18 19 20 21 23 23 25 25 27 28 28 29 29 30 30 30 30 Mrs. Helen O'Hear Mrs. Kathryn Johnson Mr. William "Bill" Stoner Mr. Richard L.
