Monthly Outreach In Support Of Women’s Shelters Until the end of June St. Paul’s is collecting donations of toiletries to benefit two Toronto women’s shelters. Like last year and the year before, we are providing donations to the North York Women’s Shelter. But this year, those donations will be shared with Mary’s Home, a women’s shelter run by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Children’s Ministry spent last Sunday gardening in the green space in front of the church. They learned about the amazing wonder and beauty of God’s creation! “We have an existing connection with the North York Women’s Shelter,” explained David Kirk McCleary, Outreach Pastor. “And now we are establishing a more local connection with Mary’s Home.” (Continued on page 2) (Continued from page 1) Mary’s Home is a 38 bed emergency shelter that offers accommodation to women in crisis. “We have a responsibility as a church to help the neighbourhood understand that we’re really there for them,” said David Kirk. “It’s not just about us at St. Paul’s, it’s about making an impact in the larger community that surrounds the church. It’s important to help others understand they’re loved and cared for because they are also created in the image of God.” The North York Women’s Shelter offers 30 beds and is at capacity almost every day of the year. Many of the women who visit the shelter are survivors of domestic abuse. “It can be dangerous for women to leave their abusers,” said Abby Wong, Volunteer and Fundraising Coordinator at the Shelter. “At times we have women who show up at our doors with nothing more than the clothes on their back.” Upon arrival women are provided with a care package, containing essential toiletries such as soap and shampoo. “It can be a very emotional time and we want to make sure she and the counsellor have the opportunity to work on those issues,” explained Abby. “We don’t want her worrying about trying to find a toothbrush. That first night is about letting her know she made a great choice. It’s a huge step.” The shelter depends entirely on donations for the contents of their care packages. “Many times they’re leaving their homes with nothing, none of the things that provide them with comfort,” said David Kirk. “These items help them re-establish a sense of normalcy. “Small acts of kindness can make the biggest difference to somebody. It’s something that we as a community ought to do to help these women heal.” Help us collect donations for women in need. Place your donations of unopened toiletries in the box in the Atrium. Last Sunday our Youth Group held their end of year party at Centre Island. They had a barbeque and celebrated another great year. Introduction of Candidates Today we are introducing those who are preparing to take a step of faith and commitment next Sunday, June 15th. Some people have decided to publicly confirm their faith to show they are committed to following Jesus. Some are parents who wish to bring up their children to be followers of Jesus and so are bringing them for baptism. Others are adults, who while baptized in the past, are now saying they want to make St. Paul’s their spiritual home. Please take time after the service to welcome them and pray for them this coming week. Watch for them every week in the What’s Happening! If you want to hear the sermon again, go to stpaulsbloor.org/sermons Read Genesis 1:1-2, 2:7, Acts 2:1-15, 29-42 and John 20:19-23. 1. Jesus appears to the disciples after His resurrection. Why were they afraid and meeting behind locked doors? 2. How would you describe what takes place in the interaction between Jesus and His disciples? 3. What do you think is the significance of the authority which Jesus gives to the disciples? What can we learn about the Holy Spirit from these 3 passages? 4. In Acts 2:12 the people asked in amazement, “what can this mean?” What do you think is the meaning of these events? 5. How do we see the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of believers today? 6. “Pentecost” was the Jewish feast of weeks (now called Shavuot) being 50 days after Passover. The first fruits of the corn harvest were presented and in later times the giving of the Law to Moses was commemorated. Consider how appropriate this time was for the Holy Spirit to come into the disciples’ lives and initiate the Christian church.
