Southwestern University was founded as Southwestern Colleges in 1946, when the entire country was in the process of rehabilitation from the destruction that resulted from the Second World War. The founders were Don Matias Hipolito Chavez

Aznar II and his wife, Doña Anunciacion Barcenilla Aznar, both pharmacists, who wanted to establish a school that was within the reach of the common people. SWU Located in the middle of Cebu city, the 2nd biggest city in South Philippines and closer to countries like Singapore and Malaysia.

Today, SWU offers over 50 degree programs in the graduate and undergraduate levels, with an enrolment of more than 10 thousands. Syllabus: Was drawn up by Doctors educated in Cambridge University and Harvard Medical School, USA and meets the latest international standards of Medical Education.

Duration and Degree Awarded : 5.5 years BSMD program equivalent to

MBBS. First part is called the Bachelor of Science (BS) which is basic medical course and the duration is for 16 months. Then the MD program runs for another 4 years including one year clinical rotational internship.

International students can do their internship in their home country.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Lecture Rooms: Fully air-conditioned rooms complete with sound system and audio-visual facilities are used for lectures and conferences, with seating capacity of 50-100 each.

Tutorial Rooms : Air-conditioned rooms are provided for the small group discussions and tutorial sessions typically conducted in the Problem-Based

Learning methodology. Computers with Internet access are available in each tutorial room.

Computer: A total of 100s of computer workstations are available for student’s academic purposes and operations use, are conveniently located. Majority of these are provided with Internet access.

Instrument Room: An air-conditioned Instrument Room is maintained where delicate and sophisticated instruments are kept for the use of students in

Biochemistry.

Multi-Purpose Room: This room serves as a preparation room for histology and gross anatomy sessions. It is also available for department meetings.

Audio-Visual Room: Complete audio-visual facilities equip the Audio-Visual

Room, such as television sets, VHS, VCD player, computers, and various types of projectors, i.e., LCD, overhead, slide and microscope projectors. This is also where various anatomical models are put on display.

Laboratories: With their corresponding stock rooms, all laboratories are equipped with adequate basic facilities for pursuing the requirements of the laboratory courses in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology,

Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology, and Preventive Medicine.

Library: The Health Sciences Library is located on the third floor of the Our Lady of Lourdes Hall and has updated books, journals, and references, which enrich the student’s studies and research. The library is open on weekdays and Saturdays. The medical library occupies about half of the third floor of the Lourdes Hall or

University Library building.

Hostel: SWU provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls on Campus. The hostels are well equipped with A/C, Study Table, Kitchen utility items and cots with mattresses. Some students choose to stay off Campus which facilitates cooking and some time less expensive. There is India stall in the Food court on campus makes it more homely for Indian students.

Medical education in the Philippines:

Medical education in the Philippines is principally offered and developed by accredited and government recognized medical schools in the country. The Philippine medical schools are graduate schools offering the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) is a professional degree program dealing with medical theories, practices, technologies, and problem solving. The completion of the degree program with one-year postgraduate internship qualifies a candidate to take the licensure exam for medical doctors in the

Philippines. Medical Schools in country are regulated by the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) of the
