The Barcelona chair was originally created in 1929. The chair was used by Spanish Royalty at the German Pavilion in Barcelona Spain.
Not long after the Barcelona Chair became known as the “chair for kings”. Today it is recognized as an iconic modern classic design. Its
stately shape represents the Bauhaus movement. The original chair was upholstered using ivory colored Pigskin. The chair and ottoman
makes extensive use of both leather piping and impressed buttons. The design drew inspiration from ancient folding chairs. This can
clearly be seen where the frame meets in an x pattern almost looking as if it could fold up in position. The original frame was even
designed to bolt together. In fact, it was not until 1950 that the frame was redesigned using solid stainless providing a smoother finished
look.
History of the Original Designer,
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe was born on March 27, 1886. He passed away August 17, 1969. He is regarded to this day as one of the
pioneers of modern architecture. His concept of “less is more” in architecture can be seen in his furniture designs. His building featured
industrial steel and glass. Low profile cushions and clean thin steel frames are signatures of his furniture pieces. He migrated from
Germany to the U.S in 1937 with growing threat from the Nazi party. Mies went to work for the Institute of Illinois in Chicago as the head
of the Architecture Department. His 31year work history in the U.S was spent mostly working from his studio in Chicago. The majority of
his focus his time was building design. His furniture designs, which he created in collaboration with Lilly Reich have become classics.
Included amongst these are The Barcelona Chair, The Barcelona Table, the BRNO Chair and the Tugendhat chair.
