THE RABBI SPEAKS
Thanksgiving Insights
The most widely observed Jewish holiday among American Jews is...
Thanksgiving. More than Pesach and Hannukah. if you say Thanksgiving
is not a Jewish holiday, well I would beg to differ.
The proof:
The word Jew derived from Jacob's son Judah, means thankfulness.
The only prayer that will continue even in Messianic times is the modim
or gratitude prayer.
The Talmudic proverb posing the question, "Who is rich? answers with, "Those who rejoice in
their lot."
Those same rabbis inform us that we are commanded to offer a 100 blessings every day. Not that
God needs are adulation, but rather to exercise our gratitude muscles frequently throughout our
waking hours. Indeed the first prayer we recite and literally the first action we take upon opening
our eyes each morning is "Modeh ani", I acknowledge and thank The Lord for waking up to a new
day of possibilities .
Gratitude and thanksgiving is an important Jewish trait known as "Hakarat hatov", or literally
recognizing and appreciating the good. So are you convinced? To be sure, none of the pilgrims
were Jewish, but they knew their Bible and fashioned Thanksgiving as their contemporary
commemoration of Sukkot, the Jewish Harvest and gratitude festival.
There is nothing more Jewish and spiritually resonant than Thanksgiving, and a national holiday
dedicated to this value has deep significance to our lives.
A Talmudic legend tells the story of Nachum Ish Gamzu. He was called Ish Gamzu because whatever challenges and set backs came his way, instead of bemoaning his fate and complaining to
God, he would instead recite "Gam Zu Letov" this must be for the best. Once he was traveling
with a donkey, a rooster and a candle to light his way. His donkey was attacked and died by a
wild beast and yet Nachum said Gam Zu Letov -this is for the best. The rooster ran off frightened
by some noise and again he said, Gam Zu Letov-this is for the best. Then a strong wind blew out
the candle and still Nachum said, this is for the best. So without the means to travel or see his
way to the village, he spent the night in the dark in the middle of nowhere. The next morning he
hiked to town and saw the village burnt to the ground. A gang of robbers had pillaged and destroyed everything and harmed many . Of course Nachum was unscathed as he recited yet again,
"Gam Zu Letov", this is for the best.
As we gather around our holiday table in a few weeks, let us be mindful of our heritage and of
Nachum. We live in a beautiful world and if our lives are imperfect and sometimes painful, still
God is watching over us and we have faith that all will be right. Gam Zu Letova.
So let us be grateful .
Happy Thanksgiving,
Rabbi Raphael Adler

THE CANTOR’S VOICE
We are all thankful for the many blessings in each of our lives. As Americans, we celebrate and show gratitude on Thanksgiving, while as Jews we
give thanks at every meal. After every meal, we give thanks by saying the
birkat ha-mazon, the grace-after-meal.
The birkat ha-mazon consists of four core blessings. In the first blessing, we
thank G-d for providing food to sustain the lives of all who G-d created in this
world. The first blessing concludes, “Blessed art Thou, Lord, who provides
food for all.”
The second blessing thanks G-d for the land of Israel: We thank Thee, Lord
our G-d, for the desirable, good, and spacious land that Thou gave our forefathers as a heritage; for having
brought us out of the land of Egypt and redeemed us from slavery; for Thy covenant that Thou sealed in
our flesh; for Thy Torah … For everything … Blessed art Thou, Lord, for the land and for the food.
This blessing of Thanksgiving for the land of Israel was even recited in times when the Jewish people were
not in physical possession of the land. The blessing of Thanksgiving for the land of Israel – and other prayers for Israel – imbued the Jewish people with a love of Israel and a spiritual connection to the land. Just
as the first blessing in the birkat ha-mazon recognizes that food is essential for the survival and development of every individual, the second blessing reminds us that the land of Israel is essential for the survival
and development of the Jewish people as a nation.
The third blessing addresses our spiritual needs – as individuals and as a nation. The third blessing originally expressed gratitude for Jerusalem and the Holy Temple, but since the destruction of the Second Temple, it has been rewritten to express a hope that G-d rebuild Jerusalem, the spiritual center of the Jewish
people: “Rebuild Jerusalem, the holy city, soon in our days. Blessed art Thou, Lord, who in His mercy
builds Jerusalem.”
Finally, the fourth blessing, thanks G-d “who is good and does good” for being merciful and not allowing the
Jewish people to perish. This blessing was added to the core of the birkat ha-mazon following the destruction of the Second Temple. The post-Temple period was marked by despair and destruction. Yet, despite
the gloominess of the period, the Jewish people continued to thank G-d for G-d’s kindness: “It is G-d who
has bestowed, does bestow, and will always bestow upon us grace, loving kindness, mercy, and relief, rescue, blessing … everything good.” The Jewish people did not lose hope, nor did they forget to thank G-d,
even in their darkest hours – after they had lost the land of Israel and the Temple had been destroyed.
The tradition of saying grace after meals is an obligation outlined for us in the Torah: “When you have
eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your G-d for the good land that He has given you.” Thus,
as American-Jews, we are fortunate to have two customs that remind us to express Thanksgiving. As
Americans we have a tradition of expressing gratitude during this Thanksgiving season – Thanksgiving for
food and for our country. And as Jews, we say the birkat ha-mazon after every meal, fulfilling a Mitzvah
and expressing thanks for our food and our spiritual homeland, Israel.
Marlene and our entire family join me in wishing you all a very happy Thanksgiving “stuffed” with wonderful
moments and memories to be thankful for.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to focus on the many varied programs that
are being planned for the fall of 2014 by our clergy and lay leadership. On Sunday,
November 2nd the Woodbury Jewish Center and The Jewish National Fund invite you to a
breakfast honoring many of our Nursery and Religious School parents. Our guest speaker will be Ezra Ravins the JNF-KKL Israel Emissary to the Southeast. Breakfast is on us,
but please contact Linda Altman in the synagogue office to register. Thank you to Rabbi
Adler, Rami Abada, Larry Ingber, Michael Kessler, and Robin Schorr for organizing this
event. A special thank you to Bagel Boss of Roslyn for sponsoring the breakfast
The annual Nursery School “Shop-n- Schmooze” is set for Wednesday, November 19th. As always, it
promises to be a wonderful evening, and will take place in our beautiful cocktail room. Take time to make
your reservation and join us for fun, food and, of course, some shopping – all for the benefit of the WJC
Nursery School. Thank you to Mollie Newman, Whitney Sigler, Kara Kaplan, and Robin Schorr for all their
hard work in making this a successful evening.
Our own Sandra Schoenbart will be teaching yoga classes a few evenings in the coming months. Please
check the green sheets for dates and times.
Three years ago we had the pleasure of being entertained by Boston University’s premier Jewish co-ed
a cappella group, Kol Echad. They will be returning to us this December, and we’re so happy to have them
back. They have performed in synagogues and schools all over the country. An e-mail will go out with the
dates as soon as we firm them up. We look forward to being entertained by these talented, young adults.
I’d like to express my appreciation to the members of our congregation who worked so hard in making this
year’s High Holiday services so special. Thank you to Rabbi Adler and Cantor Cohen for leading such inspirational and beautiful services. High Holy Day Co-chairs Dr. Ellen Feit and Dr. Paul Chaskes, along with
Cindy Matte, and Howie Borg, worked tirelessly during the High Holy Days to get honorees to the bimah on
time. Marty Pollak did a wonderful job as Baal Shacharit, Mark Minsky led and organized the ushers to
maintain decorum in the Sanctuary, and Michael Cohen once again took “Shofar blowing” to another level.
Thank you to Dr. Meisel for leading our family services in the Chapel. Thank you to David Edelheit and Linda Altman for again updating our Yizkor Memorial Book. The building looked wonderful thanks to our custodial staff led by Arnie Aprea. As always, thank you to Victor and Dolores Hatami for again donating the
lighting and video system that allows everyone to enjoy the services thoroughly, and for the beautifully
draped sukkah that always magically appears in the parking lot on cue right after Rosh Hashanah.
Speaking of Sukkot, it wouldn’t be the High Holy Days at the WJC without both the annual Sisterhood Sukkot oneg, and Pizza in the Hut. Thank you to Sisterhood President Felice Linder, Susi Schuster, and Paul
Chaskes for arranging those events. Thanks again to the Daniels family and Bagel Boss of Roslyn for
providing the food for them.
As I mentioned during my Kol Nidre address, our synagogue needs your support. Please try to show that
support by joining us in one or more of our planned events. You will be glad that you did.

SENIOR’S GROUP-SAGE
Greetings from beautiful Jerusalem, Israel! We had rain during several Sukkot meals, which is
quite unusual for this time of year; let's hope that it is a good omen for a wet rainy season.
Sukkot here has reminded me a little of Xmas in N.Y. In the days leading up to the chag
(holiday) ,we saw many cars with schach (tree branches) strapped to the roof; now that the chag
is over, they litter the sidewalks, waiting to be collected by the sanitation workers!
Our next 2 meetings will be:
Thursday, November 13 at 10:30 A.M. in the Kiddush Room
Thursday December 11 at 10:30 A.M. in the Kiddush Room.
Join us on November 13 as Cantor Aaron Cohen presents "Shlomo Carlebach: The Man and His
Music ". I look forward to seeing you then!
Be well,
Roberta Weinstein-Cohen

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS
It’s already two months into the school year and so much has happened.
Our students studied about and celebrated the fall festivals. They contributed to a successful food drive, donating shopping bags of food for needy
families. They decorated the Sukkah and contributed to the Photography
Contest, “All Things Jewish.” Children who began their studies this year at
WJC were welcomed at the New Student Commencement. Many parents
came for visiting day, spent time in class learning together with their children and stayed for a briefing of the curriculum and grade activities. Many
students are attending the family congregation regularly and are enjoying
the services led by our new leader, Ruth Deane. What links these events is
the active involvement by both children and parents. When there are
shared experiences at the synagogue—parents with children, the value of the experience is enhanced in
the eyes of children.
November is a wonderful month for special events that enrich each child’s learning experiences. The Family Congregation will hold services on November 1, 8, 15 and 22. Services begin at 10 AM and students
are expected to remain to the conclusion at 11:45 in order to earn full credit for the service. Birthday Shabbat occurs on November 22 and December 13 and celebrates the birthdays of children born in November
and December respectively. Parents are encouraged to attend and offer a special blessing for their child
before the open ark. Students are required to attend a minimum of 10 services for the year. Children who
meet this requirement by mid-January are invited to Super Bowl XIII, a bowling party at Syosset Lanes held
in February.
The faculty will participate in a Yom Iyun, a day of professional development, with Jewish educators from
Conservative and Reform synagogues on Sunday, November 9. Classes are suspended for students.
Our Hey students will visit the Holocaust Museum on Wednesday, November 12. A Holocaust survivor will
address the students and serve as the docent for the tour of the museum. A special spot-light shines on
our Daled students on Sunday, November 16. Daled students and parents will attend a Tefillin Workshop
at 8:30 AM in the Chapel, followed by a breakfast sponsored by Men’s Club and then participate in the
Daled Mitzvah Project orientation. Speakers from several prominent charities will address the gathering.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held on the evening of December 3. Report cards will be distributed
and teachers will discuss individual student progress. Students will be dismissed at 5:45 PM.
There will be great sales for Chanukah gifts on Sunday and Monday, December 7 & 8 at the Chanukah
Boutique, held in the youth lounge. Children will have the opportunity to shop for gifts for siblings, parents
and grandparents as well parents may shop for presents for children.
Gimel students will roll up their sleeves on Wednesday, December 10, to take part in a Menorah making
workshop and olive oil pressing demonstration. This special program is sponsored by the Sakhai family.
The WJC Annual Chanukah party will be held on Wednesday, December 17. Join friends and family for
the lighting of the great menorah, singing of holiday songs, enjoying carnival games and sharing a light
dinner.
Come and join us at these wonderful programs. Share the experience!

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS
Anyone who visited the Sukkah on Sukkot, couldn’t help but admire
the beautiful decorations. Our children certainly did their part. Each
class proudly displayed their creations, and celebrated with “Pizza-InThe-Hut” in a fun-filled way. Thank you to all who made this possible.
As we completed the Jewish holidays in September and October, it is
time to focus on the secular holidays in November. We begin the
month with Election Day. Classes will have a chance to experience
voting. The children will cast their ballot for a choice of snack, or their favorite paint colors. This
opportunity to select things of specific interest to them, empowers children in decision making and
ensures them that their opinions count and can make a difference. It also teaches them to respect
the idea that others are able to differ in opinions from them.
The highlight of November is the celebration of Thanksgiving. The children will learn about the
Pilgrims, the Native Americans, and the first Thanksgiving. They will sing songs, create costumes,
and celebrate in their classrooms with special Thanksgiving foods that they prepared. The traditions inherent in the holiday include gathering with family, eating lots of foods, and taking the time
to appreciate what we have; all elements of many Jewish holidays. In school, we use Thanksgiving to reflect on all the things that we are thankful for. We teach the children to thank the people in
their lives, paving the way to thanking G-d for all the wonderful things that G-d has done and created for us.
As our Thanksgiving celebrations become a memory, we quickly turn to Chanukah dreidels and
menorahs. There is a lot of excitement and eager anticipation as the children create menorahs
and design cards and gifts. They will learn about the Festival of Lights through stories and songs,
telling of the triumph of Judah Maccabee and his army in the quest for religious freedom. The thrill
of the holiday will be enhanced by the joy of spinning dreidels, sizzling latkes and the sounds of
our children trying to recite the blessings as they light the classroom menorahs. Our nursery
school families will be invited to join us at our Chanukah celebrations.
We use Thanksgiving and Chanukah as an opportunity to teach the meaning of Tzedakah, and
helping people who are less fortunate than ourselves. They are encouraged to bring money every
Friday to help fill the Tzedakah box and by bringing in non-perishable foods to feed hungry families.
On behalf of our staff, we wish all of our families a healthy, happy, safe, ad peaceful holiday
season.
Shalom,
Vivien Grossman and Cindy Common

Youth News
New Staff!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Esther DuBow and I am the new Youth
Group Director for Woodbury Jewish Center. I grew up in Woodmere, NY and
attended HAFTR through 12th grade. I currently live on Manhattan’s Upper West
Side and work as a full time Jewish Studies teacher at the Schechter School of
Long Island.
I'm really looking forward to the upcoming year and having the opportunity to get to know you and
your children. I'll be working with all three age groups; PreKadima (grades 3-5), Kadima (grades
6-7) and USY/TeenCorp (grades 8-12).
We had a wonderful kickoff carnival for the younger groups, with thanks to Great Neck Games and
Regal Caterers and all the parents who showed up to help! USY/TeenCorp is starting up right
after the holidays and will continue to do community service projects as a way to uphold Jewish
values while giving back to the community.
As I told the students at religious school, I bring the fun!

In case of an Emergency……….
The question has been asked “Can the rabbi and/or
cantor charge me for performing a funeral for my
parent or sibling?”
Your rabbi wishes to guide and be of assistance to
you in your time of need.
The answer is “Yes” they can. Neither the Rabbi nor the
Cantor will charge for performing the Funeral of a member
or a member’s child. In this case a donation to the
Discretionary Fund may be appropriate.
In cases of serious illness or the death of a loved one:
Please call Rabbi Adler at 496-9100 X 125 or at home,
509-9481
Please note that you must call the Rabbi before finalizing funeral arrangements.
However the term “member” does not include parents or
sibling. Thus either is permitted to charge a fee for officiating at or participating in a funeral. While local Funeral
homes, including Gutterman’s of Woodbury will include or
tell you at the time you make arrangements of the clergy
charge, please feel free to discuss it with either
Rabbi Adler or Cantor Cohen at the time you make the
arrangements with them.
On Shabbat or Yom Tov, Rabbi Adler does not use the
telephone. Therefore, you can convey information to
him on these days at the synagogue during service
times, by calling immediately after Shabbat or Yom
Tov.
