IAOMS 50th Anniversary Reception and Gala Dinner COMMEMORATIVE GALA PROGRAM Guildhall City of London Friday, April 27, 2012 London, thou art the flower of cities all! William Dunbar Welcome to the IAOMS 5oth Anniversary Celebration and Gala Dinner O n behalf of the leadership of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) I welcome you to this special Reception and Gala Dinner. As we gather tonight in the Guildhall in London we bring the history of our professional organization full circle. It was on Tuesday, July 2, 1962 that the IAOS met in this historic building for a special banquet celebrating the successful conclusion of the First International Conference on Oral Surgery. During that event, the fi rst conversations were held among our founding fathers Kishore Nayak about developing an international organization. It took the foresight of Fred Henny of the American Association and Sir Terence Ward of the British Association to establish the foundation for a truly international association. Over the intervening years the group grew to include more than 5,000 members organized into 78 affi liated national associations and represented before the IAOMS Executive Committee by six regional associations. The developing organization faced numerous challenges along the way but persevered. For example, it overcame regional differences in training through the acceptance of the International Guidelines for Training and Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Later on, IAOMS established special interest groups and fellowship training programs to expand the surgical expertise of the specialty in developing areas of the world. It also launched a well-respected scientific publication, the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Now, 50 years on we come together to recognize and celebrate five decades of accomplishment and service to the profession. This would not have been possible without the hard work and perseverance of our dedicated volunteers and members. I salute them all, too numerous to mention individually. I am pleased to note that 48 countries are represented at tonight’s event. This is a true reflection of the global reach of IAOMS. Thank you all for joining us on this special night. We look forward to celebrating many more milestones in the continuing progress of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Kishore Nayak Presiding 2012–2013 IAOMS President 1 THE GUILDHALL B uilt between 1411 and 1440, Guildhall has been a center of City power since the 12th Century. Situated in the heart of the City of London this magnificent Medieval Grade I listed landmark was designed to reflect the importance of London’s ruling elite. It reflects an era when the Lord Mayor of London rivaled the monarch for influence and prestige. Guildhall is where the Mayor and the ruling merchant class held court and fine-tuned the laws and trading regulations that helped create London’s wealth. It served as the original meeting place of the early administrative assemblies of citizens in their Great Congregations Guildhall Grand Hall of the 13th and 14th Centuries. Now, in the 21st Century, its splendor is still awe-inspiring. The Guildhall remains the home to the City of London Corporation and here, each year, the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs are elected by the Liverymen meeting in Common Hall. The Guildhall also acts as a grand setting for glittering banquets in honor of visiting heads of state and other dignitaries, royal occasions and receptions for major historical anniversaries. Within the walls of this national treasure lie six spectacular rooms. The IAOMS 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Reception will be held in two of them. The reception will be held in the Guildhall Art Gallery, which is a recent addition to the Guildhall. Dedicated by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 1999, it houses the City of London Corporation’s renowned collection of works of art. Dinner will be served in the Old Library and Print Room. Designed by Sir Horace Jones and built in 1870, the light and spacious room is fitted with handsome oak bookcases that originally house a collection of more than 40,000 volumes, MSS and maps. This collection was moved to the newly-constructed west wing and the Museum of London in 1974. To the north of the room is a magnificent stained-glass window depicting William Caxton. 2 ABOUT THE IAOMS T he International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) was founded in 1962 by Sir Terence Ward (United Kingdom) and Fred A. Henny, (U.S.A.) as the International Association of Oral Surgeons. The Association’s name changed in 1986 to the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In 2012 IAOMS celebrates its 50th Anniversary. The mission of the IAOMS, which serves more than 5,000 members, is to elevate the quality of health care world-wide through the advancement of the art and science of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The IAOMS is the preeminent provider of continuing medical education to oral and maxillofacial surgeons internationally. IAOMS is affi liated with six regional associations representing 78 countries in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Oceania and Africa. The goals of the IAOMS are: • To identify, coordinate, facilitate, and communicate research and patient care priorities internationally. • To communicate with government and international agencies regarding the priorities and strategies for improving care to the underserved. • To facilitate the establishment of training centers in developing countries and provide academic assistance as appropriate. • To evaluate and disseminate advance in other branches of medicine and dentistry worldwide. • To develop a bank of information of learning concerning patient care strategies and make them available through electronic and other means. • To develop practitioner-effective and friendly methods of international electronic communication and telemedicine to improve OMS healthcare. Through the IAOMS Education Committee and the IAOMS Foundation, educational courses and training programs are advancing the standards of care in oral and maxillofacial surgery world-wide. The Association’s flagship publication is the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which is published monthly. IAOMS also publishes the IAOMS Newsletter, a free quarterly membership publication that reports on the issues, deliberations, and actions of the IAOMS and also provides information on new developments in the specialty from around the globe. In addition, the organization distributes a weekly e-publication — IAOMS Weekly eNewsBrief — that provides highlights of the week’s top industry news. IAOMS also communicates through its official website, which can be found at www.iaoms.org. 3 IAOMS 5oth Anniversary Reception and Gala Dinner Program 19:00–19:30 19:30–22:00 RECEPTION Guildhall Art Gallery Sparkling wine service GALA DINNER Old Library Print Room Music performed throughout the reception and dinner by Student Musicians from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. 19:45 – 20:00 Welcome Robert Woodwards, Co-Chair, 50th Anniversary Celebration, IAOMS Treasurer 20:00 – 21:00 Dinner Service 21:00 – 21:30 Dessert Service 21:30 – 22:00 Remarks Peter Banks, IAOMS Past President (1997–1999) Toasts Guildhall Art Gallery To the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Kishore Nayak, IAOMS President To the Guests and Dignitaries Iain Hutchinson, BAOMS President Old Library and Print Room 4 IAOMS 5oth Anniversary Gala Dinner Menu First Course Asparagus Soup Baby Vegetable Salad with Soft Boiled Quails Egg and Caesar Dressing Wine: Nutbourne Sussex Reserve 2009 • Second Course Brochette of Carmarthenshire Lamb with Dates and Cumin Sweet Potato and Sage Tortellini, Cucumber Raita • Vegetarian Menu Brochette of Haloumi and Sweet Peppers with Dates and Cumin Sweet Potato and Sage Tortellini, Cucumber Yogurt Wine: Chateau la Baronne Corbieres 2006 • Dessert Service St. George’s Rhubarb Tart Handmade British Sweet Meats and Chocolates Fresh Fruits and Cheeses Madeira Syllabub Continental Blend Coffee 5 IAOMS HISTORICAL MILESTONES Founding of IAOMS The fi rst steps in establishing an international association of oral surgeons were taken by Fred Henny. He was an oral surgeon and chief of the departments of dentistry and oral surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. A leader in the field, he served as president of the American Society of Oral Surgeons in 1960 and also as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Oral Surgery. While attending a meeting of the American Dental Society of Europe in 1959 in Stockholm Dr. Henny met Gerry Leatherman, a British dental surgeon who at the time was the secretary general of the FDI. Dr. Henny made inquiries about the possibility of holding an international conference of oral surgeons with European colleagues. Dr. Leatherman suggested he contact Terence Ward, a consultant oral surgeon in East Grinstead, U.K. At a subsequent meeting between Drs. Ward, Henny and Lyall Bishop the idea emerged of having a conference in London. Under the leadership of Terry Ward the fi rst International Conference on Oral Surgery (ICOS) took place at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London on July 1–5, 1962. It was attended by 750 delegates and accompanying persons from more than 40 countries. The 50th Anniversary of the IAOMS was also held at the RCS on April 27, 2012. During the conference, Dr. Ward was approached about drafting the constitution for the International Association of Oral Surgeons (IAOS) during a meeting that was attended by Lyall Bishop, president of ASOS; Fred Henny; Jørgen Rud of Denmark and Martin Hut, at that time the president of the Dutch Association. Colleagues attending the conference were invited to join the fledgling group and by June 1963 the membership of IAOS had grown to 516. The association changed its name to the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) in 1984. By 2012 IAOMS membership exceeded 5,000. Organizational meeting of the IAOS. Since that time, the Foundation has been active in all corners of the globe sponsoring numerous educational programs, forming a number special interest groups (SIGs), developing a fellowship program, organizing professional outreach activities and arranging for donation of operating room equipment to dental schools. Affiliated National Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Associations From the beginning it was apparent that for IAOMS to be successful it would need a strong presence within each of the nations from which its members originated. Building upon a network of existing national organizations as well as the formation of new groups, IAOMS now includes 78 affi liated national associations. IAOMS Foundation Past-Chairman John Ll. Williams with Mark Chindia and Symon Guthue from the department in Nairobi with some of the equipment donated by the IAOMS Foundation. Regional Associations To facilitate communications and organization, the IAOMS decided to invite six geographical regions to represent their particular nations before the Executive Committee. These Regional Associations include Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Oceania. Journal The International Journal of Oral Surgery was established in 1972 under the leadership of Jens Pindborg, a renowned oral pathologist from Denmark. The mission of the Journal is to publish papers of the highest scientific merit and widest possible scope on work in oral and maxillofacial surgery and supporting specialties, including interactions with the related surgical specialties. In the first years, the publication primarily contained case reports on clinical pathology and some —mainly Scandinavian — clinical follow-up studies on dentoalveolar surgery. Subsequently, the content expanded to include more review and research papers. In 1987, the Journal’s name was changed to the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to reflect its expanding scope. 7 IAOMS HISTORICAL MILESTONES (continued) The Journal is divided into sections, ensuring that every aspect of oral and maxillofacial surgery is covered fully through a range of invited review articles, leading clinical and research articles, technical notes, abstracts, case reports and more. The sections include congenital and craniofacial deformities, cosmetic facial surgery, orthognathic/aesthetic facial surgery, trauma, TMJ disorders, head and neck oncology, reconstructive surgery, implantology/dentoalveolar surgery, clinical pathology, oral medicine, research and emerging technologies. Only five individuals have served as editor of the Journal during its 40-year span: Jens Pindborg (1972–1976), Erik Hjørting Hansen (1976–1987), Paul Stoelinga (1988–2000), Piet Haers (2000–2011) and Nabil Samman (2012–). The frequency of publication and number of pages has gradually increased, growing from six issues per year to 12 issues and from 96 pages per issue to 120 pages. The number of articles published annually went from approximately 90 to 210. A digital version of the Journal is now available online in addition to the original print format. Circulation of the Journal now exceeds 4,000 subscribers. The Presidential Chain Upon inauguration into office, the President of IAOMS is presented with an historic decoration that is worn at all official functions during the two-year Presidential term. Known as the Presidential Chain, the artifact consists of a gold medallion emblazoned with an enamel representation of the IAOMS logo that hangs from a gold chain and was donated to the Association by Andy Linz in 1971. The Presidential Chain is passed on to the incoming President during a special ceremony held during the fi rst Board meeting of the new Presidential term.
