American Language Institute (ALI)! Whether your need is for an English
language program, University Study at the Beach or other customized
programs, I am certain that you will find our campus a very welcoming and

At ALI you will find dedicated faculty with a commitment to student
success. Coming to a new country, a new environment, and a completly
different culture can be quite overwhelming. Our highly skilled staff, with
years of experience assisting international students, will work with you every

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is one of the
largest schools in the California State University system and second
largest university by enrollment in the state of California with 34,000
students. CSULB is a large urban campus with 8 colleges and over
280 fields of study. Located in Los Angeles County and only 3 miles

The American Language Institute at California State University,
Long Beach, is accredited by the Commission on English
Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and agrees to uphold
the CEA standards for English Language Programs.
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION
CSULB offers conditional admission to students who apply and meet the
academic qualifications for admission but do not have the required English
language proficiency. Successful completion of Level 4 of the Intensive
English Program (IEP) fulfills the English language requirement for CSULB
undergraduate programs. Successful completion of Level 6 of the IEP program
fulfills the English language requirements for most CSULB graduate programs.
UNIVERSITY CREDIT COURSES:
Students in Levels 5 and 6 of the IEP program may take 1 to 2 CSULB
university credit courses through Open University. Students in Levels 5 and
6 should add an additional week of studies for final exams during the Fall and
Spring sessions.

GLOBAL LOGISTICS SPECIALIST INTERNATIONAL (GLSI)
This 6-month program is designed to provide supply chain/ logistics training
through U.S. perspectives, English language instruction, and U.S. cultural
experiences.

TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TEFL)
Teacher training program for Teaching English as a Foreign Language

VISA/IMMIGRATION
The American Language Institute can help you understand your visa and
immigration requirements and help you maintain your status while in the United
States. The office can also help with enrollment letters, travel authorizations, I-20
and visa problems, transferring to a new school and so much more!

HOW TO APPLY TO THE AMERICAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
Students must be 18 years of age or high school graduates by time they start the
American Language Institute to apply.
APPLICATION DEADLINES
New students must submit all documents at least 4 weeks prior to their desired
start date. Transfer students must submit all documents at least 2 weeks prior to
their desired start date.
SUBMIT:

2. American Language Institute Payments
• $150 Application Fee
• First semester’s tuition payment
3. Financial Documents
• Bank statement with a minimum balance of $9,600 U.S. dollars that is less than
6 months old, sponsor letter or financial guarantee.
4. Copy of Passport

F-1 STUDENT VISA
The U.S. government requires students to obtain an F-1 Student Visa to study fulltime in the USA. An I-20 form is required to apply for the visa and will be mailed in
your acceptance packet from the American Language Institute. After receiving your
I-20 form, students will need to pay a SEVIS fee, and schedule an F-1 Student Visa
interview with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their home country.

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the American Language Institute (ALI) is to provide quality English
as a Second Language instruction that meets the high educational standards of
its affiliate campus, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).
As a unit within College of Continuing and Professional Education, the selfsupport division on campus, the American Language Institute responds to the
needs of a variety of audiences. As such, the American Language Institute
includes long-term and short-term programs, credit and non-credit courses, as
well as support services and activities appropriate for its different clients.
A large part of the efforts within the institute focuses on the Intensive English
Program (IEP), which offers academic and practical ESL instruction to a postsecondary audience. The IEP administrators, faculty and staff endeavor to
maximize learning and successfully prepare students for studies at U.S. colleges
and universities. Every effort is made to provide effective support services and
facilitate student use of campus and community resources.
